Book Separation of Three Dimensional Flow

Download or read book Separation of Three Dimensional Flow written by K. C. Wang and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Separation patterns of three-dimensional flow are discussed here, partly on the basis of limited calculated results, but mostly on experimental observations and intuition. Generally the separation pattern is rather independent of whether the boundary layer is laminar or turbulent and whether the flow is incompressible or hypersonic. The difference is in degree, not character. Various three-dimensional separation criteria are reviewed and the open-vs-closed separation idea, particularly is presented, in detail. The bulk of this work is divided into three parts, dealing with the separation over elongated inclined bodies, airplane wings at incidence, and around the corners between intersecting bodies.

Book Separation of Flow

Download or read book Separation of Flow written by Paul K. Chang and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interdisciplinary and Advanced Topics in Science and Engineering, Volume 3: Separation of Flow presents the problem of the separation of fluid flow. This book provides information covering the fields of basic physical processes, analyses, and experiments concerning flow separation. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the flow separation on the body surface as discusses in various classical examples. This text then examines the analytical and experimental results of the laminar boundary layer of steady, two-dimensional flows in the subsonic speed range. Other chapters consider the study of flow separation on the two-dimensional body, flow separation on three-dimensional body shape and particularly on bodies of revolution. This book discusses as well the analytical solutions of the unsteady flow separation. The final chapter deals with the purpose of separation flow control to raise efficiency or to enhance the performance of vehicles and fluid machineries involving various engineering applications. This book is a valuable resource for engineers.

Book A Simple Criterion for Three dimensional Flow Separation in Axial Compressors

Download or read book A Simple Criterion for Three dimensional Flow Separation in Axial Compressors written by Vai-Man Lei and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most modem blade designs in axial-flow compressors diffuse the flow efficiently over 20% to 80% of blade span and it is the endwall regions that set the limits in compressor performance. This thesis addresses the estimation, control and mitigation of three-dimensional separation near the hub corner in axial- flow compressors. A simple method to estimate the onset of hub comer separation in compressor blade passages has been developed. A parameter is defined to quantify the combined effect of adverse pressure gradient and secondary flow which are the two main mechanisms contributing to the formation of three-dimensional flow separation. There is a critical value of the parameter at which the onset of three-dimensional flow separation occurs. Data from existing research and production compressors show the generality of the separation criterion. The new parameter captures the alleviating effect of boundary layer skew on three-dimensional flow separation. Using this concept, a flow control scheme has been developed to mitigate hub comer separation by injecting spanwise momentum from the blade suction surface. A proof of concept flow control experiment demonstrates a reduction in stagnation pressure loss coefficient of 8% with an injection flow of 0.8% of the cascade mass flow.

Book Flow visualization of Three dimensional Boundary layer Separation on Bodies of Revolution at Incidence

Download or read book Flow visualization of Three dimensional Boundary layer Separation on Bodies of Revolution at Incidence written by Taeyoung Han and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface streamline patterns on three bodies of revolution, namely a spheroid, a low-drag body and a hemisphere-hemispheroid combination body, have been examined at several angles of attack. Most of the tests were performed at low Reynolds numbers in a hydraulic flume using colored dye to make the surface flow visible. A limited number of experiments was also carried out in a wind tunnel, using wool tufts, to study the influence of Reynolds number and turbulent separation. The study has verified some of the important qualitative features of three-dimensional separation criteria proposed earlier by Maskell, Lighthill, Wang and others. The observed locations of laminar separation lines on a spheroid at various incidences have been compared with the numerical boundary-layer solutions of Wang, and it is suggested that the quantitative differences may be attributed to the significant viscous-inviscid interaction, especially at large incidences. Book Analysis of Two and Three dimensional Flow Separation

Download or read book Analysis of Two and Three dimensional Flow Separation written by Olivier Grunberg and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) three-dimensional flows, treating the case of open and closed separation separately. Next, we use a method developed by Perry and Chong (1986) to derive expansions of the Navier-Stokes equations that we use as models of three-dimensional separation. We verify our theory on those models. Finally we discuss new results on genuinely three-dimensional aspects of flow separation: open and closed separation, separation lines and separation surfaces.

Book Nonlinear Dynamics of 3D Fluid Flow Separation

Download or read book Nonlinear Dynamics of 3D Fluid Flow Separation written by Amit Surana and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow separation (the detachment of fluid from a no-slip boundary) is a major cause of performance loss in engineering devices, including diffusers, airfoils and jet engines. The systematic study of flow separation dates back to the seminal work of Prandtl in 1904. He showed that a two-dimensional steady flow separates from a no-slip boundary at points where the wall shear vanishes and admits a negative gradient. Three-dimensional flows, however, tend to separate along lines, as opposed to isolated wall-shear zeros. Despite widespread effort, no generally applicable extension of Prandtl's result has emerged for even three-dimensional steady flows. In this thesis we develop a nonlinear theory for separation and attachment of steady and unsteady three-dimensional fluid flows on no-slip curved moving boundaries. The theory provides analytic criteria for locating the separation line and approximating the shape of separation surface. Based on nonlinear dynamical systems techniques, the criteria identify separation line and separation surface by locating nonhyperbolic unstable manifolds that collect and eject fluid particles from the boundary. We verify our theory on analytic flow models, in numerical simulations of important benchmark problems and in experiments. Our theory provides a systematic tool for diagnostics, configuration design and active flow control of separation and attachment in complex three dimensional fluid flows.
