Book excerpt: A revolutionary cookbook that moves the humble side dish to centre stage. Whilst writing his food blog, Rocket & Squash, Ed Smith noticed that a key part of our meals was being ignored. On too many occasions, side dishes were being relegated to an overboiled afterthought, or dismissed with a throwaway 'eat with potatoes' or 'serve with seasonal greens' line. But our side dishes have the potential to be as inspirational as the main event itself. In fact, they're often the best bit! Here it's the 'two veg' rather than the meat which are given the spotlight: you'll find 140 inspiring recipes and insightful tips to make your pulses, roots, vegetables and greens dazzle in their own right. Think of garlic oil pea shoots, smoky ratatouille, celeriac baked in a salt and thyme crust, carrots with brown butter and hazelnuts, spelt grains with wild mushrooms, and chorizo roast potatoes. Complete with a recipe directory that will help you find the perfect accompaniment, whatever your cooking, On the Side will brighten and invigorate every meal.

Book There Isn t Any Grass on This Side of the Fence

Download or read book There Isn t Any Grass on This Side of the Fence written by Roy D Perkins and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title, “There Isn't Any Grass On This Side Of The Fence” is really a metaphor of poverty stricken people who don't have a choice but to remain in their ill fated destitute state. These people, (as the subtitle indicates), have no money to even maintain a sufficient standard of living, They have no knowledge as to how to get themselves elevated up the financial hierarchy. Lastly, they don't have the time to ascertain their predicament and to move up the food chain. This is a story that begins in the 1960's and ends some decades later. Placidville is really a 1960's ghetto filled with poor and uneducated people. The project, as it's called, is a place of racial hatred, bigotry, and discrimination. Criminal activities are the order of the day. The theme of the project is to do on to others before they do on to you. The people are not just living; they are trying to survive. Little do they realize, once they move in, they will probably never be able to get out. Placidville is a spider's web for those without funds. It's an attraction that the “have nots” cannot resist. Once in the web, the people soon become aware that escape is beyond their grasp. The project changes most everyone for the worse. In Placidville, all families become dysfunctional and continually fight amongst themselves. The project makes neighbors say and do terrible things to each other in order to gain an edge over the other. As time goes on, the residents learn how to cheat, steal, and to take advantage of every good or bad opportunity that come their way. The Placidville Project is a disease and there is no cure. To make matters worse, corrupt town officials and the police want nothing to do with the project. It's a big headache that they wish would go away. However, this headache is not going away in the near future.

Book My Journey on This Side of Eternity

Download or read book My Journey on This Side of Eternity written by Albert Davis Sr. and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-05-02 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Journey on This Side of Eternity tells the story of one individual whom God used when it looked as if he was not going to live past the age of fourteen. God's plan and purpose for him are still active, even at the age of eighty. His story also illustrates how God wills us to His glory. This author's story also reveals that God's love reaches out to every man, woman, boy, and girl on the face of this planet. The author's story will also show how God had kept him from being exposed to certain negative experiences in his life that would hinder what the Lord had planned for his life. If there was a situation that started out as being negative, the Lord would intervene and turn it into a positive for His glory. The accounts given in the author's story will give you insight as to how the Lord will not give up on you. This author also learned four important things while on his journey: 1. Make God's Word (Bible) your rule of faith and code of conduct. 2. This is not all there is. We are all on a journey. 3. Let the Lord always be your inspiration and encouragement. 4. Feed your faith, and you will starve your doubts.

Book On This Side of the Desert

  • Author : Alfredo Aguilar
  • Publisher : Wick First Book

  • ISBN : 9781606354063
  • Pages : 72 pages

Download or read book On This Side of the Desert written by Alfredo Aguilar and published by Wick First Book. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize Natalie Diaz, judge i say / my mother's name, / cristina & desert marigolds / crack through a boulder. / i say my father's name, martin / & all the novena candles / in the bed of the truck are aglow. These lines from the book's titular poem "On This Side of the Desert" encapsulate the dominant themes of the collection: the power and meaning derived from the act of naming; the deep interconnectedness of Latinx cultures, a product of strong family traditions and an intimate relationship with the natural world; and a profound spirituality rooted in the sacraments of Catholic orthodoxy. This poem, like many of those in Aguilar's collection is written from the perspective of a young boy growing up along the Mexican border. As Aguilar chronicles the unique challenges faced by border communities where surviving the desert is a perpetual struggle, and the distress of finding "an entire skeleton in torn clothes" is muted by frequency, he also modernizes the traditional pastoral form to encompass both beauty and trauma. This debut book of poetry describes the experience of being raised in southern California as a child of Mexican immigrants in the shadow of the borderlands. Just as the borderlands are defined by the desert, so, too, are its inhabitants defined by their families, their culture shaped from the clay of the Sonoran desert and given life by the nourishing water of their ancestors. In these poems, the desert is recognized for what it truly is--a living, breathing body filled with both joy and pain.

Book excerpt: Six women—mothers, daughters, sisters—gone missing. Inspired by the unsolved murders of the Chillicothe Six, this harrowing novel tells the story of two sisters, both of whom could be the next victims, from the internationally best-selling author of Betty. "Capture[s] what goes horribly wrong when women don’t fit a customary victim profile...McDaniel artfully evokes each facet of their common humanity, the sinuous landscape, and defiant community in the face of evil." —Oprah Daily Arcade and Daffodil are twins born one minute apart. With their fiery red hair and thirst for escape, they form an unbreakable bond nurtured by their grandmother’s stories. Together, they disappear into their imaginations and forge a world all their own. But what the two sisters can’t escape are the generational ghosts that haunt their family. Growing up in the shadow of their rural Ohio town, the sisters cling tightly to one another. Years later, Arcade wrestles with the memories of her early life, just as a local woman is discovered drowned in the river. Soon, more bodies are found. As her friends disappear around her, Arcade is forced to reckon with the past while the killer circles closer. Arcade’s promise to keep herself and her sister safe becomes increasingly desperate and the powerful riptide of the savage side becomes more difficult to survive. Drawing from the true story of women killed in Chillicothe, Ohio, acclaimed novelist and poet Tiffany McDaniel has written a moving literary testament and fearless elegy for missing women everywhere.

Download or read book Him on the One Side and Me on the Other written by Alexander Campbell and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander and James Campbell, born and raised in Scotland, immigrated to the United States as teenagers in the 1850s and settled in vastly different regions of the country - Alexander in New York City and James in Charleston, South Carolina. When the American Civil War broke out in 1861, Alexander and James opted to fight for their adopted states and causes: Alexander enlisted in the 79th New York "Highlanders" and James in the 1st South Carolina ("Charleston") Battalion. "Him on the One Side and Me on the Other" tells the remarkable story of these two brothers divided by the Civil War. Through their wartime letters to family and to each other, the brothers expose the deep fractures in American society caused by the most destructive war in this country's history. In the most dramatic moment in this story of the brothers' wartime experiences, the letters reveal a near-reunion on the battlefield of Secessionville, South Carolina, on June 16, 1862. There Alexander was part of the Union force that assaulted Tower Battery, a fort inhabited by James and his Confederate comrades.

Book excerpt: There are the acknowledged classics of world literature: the canonical works assigned in schools, topping every must-read list . . . and then there are the B-Sides. These are the books that slipped through the cracks, went unread, missed their rightful appointment with posterity. They were ahead of their times or behind their times or on a whole different schedule than the rest of the universe. What do you do when a book that you love has been neglected or dismissed by everyone else? In B-Side Books, leading writers, critics, and scholars show why their favorite forgotten books deserve a new audience. From dusty westerns and far-out science fiction to obscure Czech novelists and romance-novel precursors, the contributors advocate for the unsung virtues of overlooked books. They write about unheralded novels, poetry collections, memoirs, and more with understanding, respect, passion, and love. In these thoughtful, often personal essays, contributors—including Stephanie Burt, Caleb Crain, Merve Emre, Ursula K. Le Guin, Carlo Rotella, and Namwali Serpell—read books by writers such as Helen DeWitt, Shirley Jackson, Stanislaw Lem, Dambudzo Marechera, Paule Marshall, and Charles Portis.

Book On the Back Side of Nowhere

Download or read book On the Back Side of Nowhere written by Dane E. Miller and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often, the demands of pastoral ministry in a small community can bury a persons soul under the rubble of countless needs and not enough solutions. These stories, taken from thirty years of ministry in an isolated, desert community with a diverse population, offer points of hope in the middle of struggle for those in similar situations. Although the details of life are random, there is a connection across the stories where grace and mercy brought hope and renewed eyes rested by time in the community. This is no step-by-step program for improvementjust a simple trek alongside others encountering grace and mercy together. Along with sadness there is joy. Coupled with laughter there are points of mourning. Throughout the book is the story unfolds of a pastor who learned to stay and be changed by grace. Dane Miller wrote the most rewarding and enriching account of a desert oasis in Rest Stop! I learned the idea of reciprocity of confession and forgiveness. This is real living without pretense! It ought to be celebrated by all! Isaac M. Kikawada, retired, Near Eastern Studies, University of California, Berkeley On the Back Side of Nowhere meets life head-onlife that could be described as theology with calluses. It is unscripted, off-key, and covered with spiritual warts. It is pastor-shepherd and a flock of unruly sheep at their most honest. Nik Ripken, author of The Insanity of God and The Insanity of Obedience, has lived most of the last thirty years overseas with his family.
