This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Use of the Ophthalmoscope in Diseases of the Nervous System and of the Kidneys: Also in Certain Other General Disorders Some considerable parts of the present volume have already been published. I may refer more especially to my paper upon the 'Optic Nerves and Retinas of the Insane, ' which appeared in the volume of Transactions of the Medical and Chirurgical Society for 1868; to an article on Medical Ophthalmoscopy, which appeared in the number of the British and Foreign Medico-Chirurgical Review' for January, 1868;to some lectures on 'Optic Neuritis, ' which appeared in the Medical Times and Gazette between the 9th of May and theist of August, 1868, inclusive; and to some papers on the use of the Ophthalmoscope in tubercular meningitis and in spinal disease, which appeared in the Lancet of May 1st and May 8th, 1869, and of January 15th, 1870. Little or nothing, however, has been transferred to this book as it stood. I have found it necessary to revise the whole, and to re-write large portions, in order to add the results of more experience and to express maturer opinions. Thus a great part, the far greater part indeed of this volume, is now issued for the first time; and its pages might have been almost indefinitely multiplied had I thought it right to use all my accumulated material, and to publish a large number of cases. Book Queen Square A History of the National Hospital and its Institute of Neurology

Download or read book Queen Square A History of the National Hospital and its Institute of Neurology written by Simon Shorvon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first neurological hospital in the world, founded in 1859, the National Hospital, Queen Square, and its affiliated Institute of Neurology remain leading neurological centres providing exceptional clinical services, teaching and research. Illustrated by over 100 historical images and much unpublished archival material, this book provides a comprehensive history of the National Hospital, the Institute, and their staff. It relates the ups and downs of the Hospital and Institute in war and peacetime, their financial struggles, many personality conflicts, efforts to remain independent and to maintain neurological dominance, academic and clinical contributions, issues relating to specialisation and subspecialisation and relations between disciplines, and the changing roles of the Hospital and Institute. The history is told from varying perspectives against the backdrop of the evolution of British clinical neuroscience, the special position of London medicine, and the influence of world wars, and is set in the context of modern British social history.
