Download or read book The Roentgen Rays in Medicine and Surgery As an Aid in Diagnosis and as a Therapeutic Agent Designed for the Use of Practitioners and Students Clas written by Francis H. Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roentgen Rays in Medicine and Surgery: As an Aid in Diagnosis and as a Therapeutic Agent; Designed for the Use of Practitioners and Students The following pages are rather a report of progress than a final presentation of this growing subject. I planned to include as complete a list as possible of the publications on the medical and surgical uses of the Roentgen rays, but when it was found that the list would add nearly one hundred pages, it was omitted; had I foreseen this, I should have referred in the text to many other important papers. My own contribution is the result of two opportunities. The one, by permission of Professor Charles R. Cross, was in the Rogers Laboratory of Physics of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. With the most cordial and efficient assistance of Messrs. Charles L. Norton and Ralph R. Lawrence, of this department, I obtained my first equipment at a time when many difficulties had to be overcome. From the late Professor Emeritus S. W. Holman, whose rare character and ability made itself felt by all who had the good fortune to be his friends, I have sought and received both advice and assistance during the course of my studies. The other opportunity has been at the Boston City Hospital. To my colleagues on its staff I am indebted for the interest they have shown by referring to me from their services many patients requiring X-ray examination or treatment. In the reproduction of the X-ray photographs there has been no retouching. I wish it were possible for me to express the gratitude I feel toward Dr. William Rollins for his unfailing aid in my efforts to obtain apparatus suitable for these examinations, and particularly for the new and better forms of vacuum tubes that he has devised. It is my privilege to express my obligation to my wife, for her devoted assistance in the preparation of this book. Download or read book Radiation in Medicine written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-04-25 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does radiation medicine need more regulation or simply better-coordinated regulation? This book addresses this and other questions of critical importance to public health and safety. The issues involved are high on the nation's agenda: the impact of radiation on public safety, the balance between federal and state authority, and the cost-benefit ratio of regulation. Although incidents of misadministration are rare, a case in Pennsylvania resulting in the death of a patient and the inadvertent exposure of others to a high dose of radiation drew attention to issues concerning the regulation of ionizing radiation in medicine and the need to examine current regulatory practices. Written at the request from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Radiation in Medicine reviews the regulation of ionizing radiation in medicine, focusing on the NRC's Medical Use Program, which governs the use of reactor-generated byproduct materials. The committee recommends immediate action on enforcement and provides longer term proposals for reform of the regulatory system. The volume covers: Sources of radiation and their use in medicine. Levels of risk to patients, workers, and the public. Current roles of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, other federal agencies, and states. Criticisms from the regulated community. The committee explores alternative regulatory structures for radiation medicine and explains the rationale for the option it recommends in this volume. Based on extensive research, input from the regulated community, and the collaborative efforts of experts from a range of disciplines, Radiation in Medicine will be an important resource for federal and state policymakers and regulators, health professionals involved in radiation treatment, developers and producers of radiation equipment, insurance providers, and concerned laypersons.

Book A Century of X Rays and Radioactivity in Medicine

Download or read book A Century of X Rays and Radioactivity in Medicine written by R.F Mould and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Century of X-Rays and Radioactivity in Medicine: With Emphasis on Photographic Records of the Early Years celebrates three great discoveries-x-rays (1895), radioactivity (1896), and radium (1898)-and recalls the pioneering achievements that founded the new science of radiology and changed the face of medicine forever. Over 700 historical illustrations with full and informative captions are supported by short introductory essays to illuminate the fascinating radiological past in an easy-to-read style. The focus of this book is on the historically more interesting early years of discovery, invention, diagnosis, therapy, dosimetry, risk, and protection. Interspersed with a variety of radiological anecdotes, the photographic record is complemented by archival accounts of the pioneer scientists and physicians and their early patients. In the chapters on diagnostic techniques, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine, the author contrasts old methods with newer technologies. He also includes two fascinating chapters on museum and industrial applications of radiography. The book is comprehensively indexed for easy retrieval of the wide variety of people, techniques, apparatus, and examples featured throughout this radiological journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radium and Radiotherapy: Radium, Thorium, and Other Radio-Active Elements in Medicine and Surgery Considerable space has been devoted to the chemistry and physics of these radio-active elements, in the belief that some conception of their properties will aid materially in the interpretation of their therapeutic action, and that they should be studied exactly as a drug that is employed in medicine, where the knowledge of its botany and chemistry is not only considered useful but necessary. The details and mathematical calculations have been largely omitted; for this information the reader is referred to books deal ing alone with radio-activity. In the medical portion the details of many different processes for the same indication are often given; the reason for this is that, though they may apparently give the same result, it may be impossible always to use a given form of application. Therefore a knowledge of several methods makes it possible for the physician to select one which meets the requirements of the individual, and while some methods mentioned are not always the most approved forms, this fact has been duly noted. In short, the object of this volume is to place the subject of radio-activity before the medical public in a clear and comprehensive manner.
