Book Early Modern Art Theory Visual Culture and Ideology 1400 1700

Download or read book Early Modern Art Theory Visual Culture and Ideology 1400 1700 written by James Hutson and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of art theory over the course of the Renaissance and Baroque eras is reflected in major stylistic shifts. In order to elucidate the relationship between theory and practice, we must consider the wider connections between art theory, poetic theory, natural philosophy, and related epistemological matrices. Investigating the interdisciplinary reality of framing art-making and interpretation, this treatment rejects the dominant synchronic approach to history and historiography and seeks to present anew a narrative that ties together various formal approaches, focusing on stylistic transformation in particular artist’s oeuvres – Michelangelo, Annibale Carracci, Guercino, Guido Reni, Poussin, and others – and the contemporary environments that facilitated them. Through the dual understanding of the art-theoretical concept of the Idea, an evolution will be revealed that illustrates the embittered battles over style and the overarching intellectual shifts in the period between art production and conceptualization based on Aristotelian and Platonic notions of creativity, beauty and the goal of art as an exercise in encapsulating the “divine” truth of nature.

Book The Essence of Art

    Book Details:
  • Author : Craig Harrison
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2020-10-12
  • ISBN : 0429801203
  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book The Essence of Art written by Craig Harrison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-12 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this book asks what kind of advice was available to somebody wishing to embark upon oil painting in England between 1850 and 1900. It is a fascinating collection of Victorian instruction on how and what to paint, linked to crucial advice about art, its meaning and its relation to contemporary life, given by practising artists, important and often popular in their time, but whose lectures and writings are long overdue for reappraisal: Leslie, Hamerton, O’Neil, Poynter, Watts, Leighton, Armitage, Quilter and Herkomer. Here, beyond the familiar voices of Ruskin, Whistler and Pater, we have a whole range of experience from an age in which issues about painting were hotly debated by large numbers of people: professional artists, amateurs, critics, gallery-goers and Academy students. This anthology brings back to life the humour, seriousness, ambitions, eccentricities and controversies of people whose work shaped the nature of mainstream Victorian art.

Book Modern Painters

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Ruskin
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2016-11-08
  • ISBN : 9781539975731
  • Pages : 222 pages

Download or read book Modern Painters written by John Ruskin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of Ruskin's acclaimed artistic analyses is presented here complete with original and supplementary illustrations, and the original diagrams. One of the most lauded art critics of the nineteenth century, John Ruskin built a reputation as a well-informed, passionate figure in the world of painting and sculpture. As well as working as a lecturer and advocate of social reform, Ruskin would devote much time to writing books on all manner of subjects; travelogues, poetry and instructive manuals to name but a few. However Ruskin was best regarded for his treatises on art and architecture. Decades of his life were characterised by attempting to find a plainer, more straightforward way of expressing his thoughts on artistic works so that his ideas and criticisms would achieve the greatest impact on the readership. In Modern Painters, Ruskin was reasonably successful: each portion of this book is set out logically, with each chapter covering a specific principle of the creative process. We observe Ruskin's thoughts about how artists may best convey aspects of their painting through the apt presentation of colors, scenes and subjects. In particular, Ruskin describes the works of the Romanticist J. M. W. Turner - an artist he viewed as almost the embodiment of greatness. This volume is in two parts - Of General Principles and Of Truth. The first part covers the various ideas and motivations which Ruskin believed characterised all artists to some extent, and the sense of power and profundity works of art communicate to those beholding them. What constitutes a great work of art, and the various ideas and feelings art has the ability to convey, are also discussed. The second part contains sequential examinations of the constituent parts of a painting. Thus there are sections on light, on water, on the earth and vegetation, and theories on the use of color. We also hear Ruskin's complex theories of the 'truths' in art, wherein he expounds on how an artist may best achieve truth and beauty in his work, and even makes distinctions between different types of truth.

Book Rubens and the Eloquence of Drawing

Download or read book Rubens and the Eloquence of Drawing written by Catherine H. Lusheck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rubens and the Eloquence of Drawing re-examines the early graphic practice of the preeminent northern Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577–1640) in light of early modern traditions of eloquence, particularly as promoted in the late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Flemish, Neostoic circles of philologist, Justus Lipsius (1547–1606). Focusing on the roles that rhetorical and pedagogical considerations played in the artist’s approach to disegno during and following his formative Roman period (1600–08), this volume highlights Rubens’s high ambitions for the intimate medium of drawing as a primary site for generating meaningful and original ideas for his larger artistic enterprise. As in the Lipsian realm of writing personal letters – the humanist activity then described as a cognate activity to the practice of drawing – a Senecan approach to eclecticism, a commitment to emulation, and an Aristotelian concern for joining form to content all played important roles. Two chapter-long studies of individual drawings serve to demonstrate the relevance of these interdisciplinary rhetorical concerns to Rubens’s early practice of drawing. Focusing on Rubens’s Medea Fleeing with Her Dead Children (Los Angeles, Getty Museum), and Kneeling Man (Rotterdam, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen), these close-looking case studies demonstrate Rubens’s commitments to creating new models of eloquent drawing and to highlighting his own status as an inimitable maker. Demonstrating the force and quality of Rubens’s intellect in the medium then most associated with the closest ideas of the artist, such designs were arguably created as more robust pedagogical and preparatory models that could help strengthen art itself for a new and often troubled age.
