Investigating the interdisciplinary reality of framing art-making and interpretation, this treatment rejects the dominant synchronic approach to history and historiography and seeks to present anew a narrative that ties together various formal approaches, focusing on stylistic transformation in particular artist’s oeuvres – Michelangelo, Annibale Carracci, Guercino, Guido Reni, Poussin, and others – and the contemporary environments that facilitated them. Through the dual understanding of the art-theoretical concept of the Idea, an evolution will be revealed that illustrates the embittered battles over style and the overarching intellectual shifts in the period between art production and conceptualization based on Aristotelian and Platonic notions of creativity, beauty and the goal of art as an exercise in encapsulating the “divine” truth of nature.

However Ruskin was best regarded for his treatises on art and architecture. Decades of his life were characterised by attempting to find a plainer, more straightforward way of expressing his thoughts on artistic works so that his ideas and criticisms would achieve the greatest impact on the readership. In Modern Painters, Ruskin was reasonably successful: each portion of this book is set out logically, with each chapter covering a specific principle of the creative process. We observe Ruskin's thoughts about how artists may best convey aspects of their painting through the apt presentation of colors, scenes and subjects. In particular, Ruskin describes the works of the Romanticist J. M. W. Turner - an artist he viewed as almost the embodiment of greatness. This volume is in two parts - Of General Principles and Of Truth. The first part covers the various ideas and motivations which Ruskin believed characterised all artists to some extent, and the sense of power and profundity works of art communicate to those beholding them. What constitutes a great work of art, and the various ideas and feelings art has the ability to convey, are also discussed. The second part contains sequential examinations of the constituent parts of a painting. Thus there are sections on light, on water, on the earth and vegetation, and theories on the use of color. We also hear Ruskin's complex theories of the 'truths' in art, wherein he expounds on how an artist may best achieve truth and beauty in his work, and even makes distinctions between different types of truth.

Book excerpt: Rubens and the Eloquence of Drawing re-examines the early graphic practice of the preeminent northern Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577–1640) in light of early modern traditions of eloquence, particularly as promoted in the late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Flemish, Neostoic circles of philologist, Justus Lipsius (1547–1606). Focusing on the roles that rhetorical and pedagogical considerations played in the artist’s approach to disegno during and following his formative Roman period (1600–08), this volume highlights Rubens’s high ambitions for the intimate medium of drawing as a primary site for generating meaningful and original ideas for his larger artistic enterprise. As in the Lipsian realm of writing personal letters – the humanist activity then described as a cognate activity to the practice of drawing – a Senecan approach to eclecticism, a commitment to emulation, and an Aristotelian concern for joining form to content all played important roles. Two chapter-long studies of individual drawings serve to demonstrate the relevance of these interdisciplinary rhetorical concerns to Rubens’s early practice of drawing. Focusing on Rubens’s Medea Fleeing with Her Dead Children (Los Angeles, Getty Museum), and Kneeling Man (Rotterdam, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen), these close-looking case studies demonstrate Rubens’s commitments to creating new models of eloquent drawing and to highlighting his own status as an inimitable maker. Demonstrating the force and quality of Rubens’s intellect in the medium then most associated with the closest ideas of the artist, such designs were arguably created as more robust pedagogical and preparatory models that could help strengthen art itself for a new and often troubled age.
