Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Morphine Eater: Or From Bondage to Freedom, the Opium, Morphine and Kindred Habits; Their Origin, Nature and Extent, Together With the Proper Method of Treatment to Be Adopted For the past twenty years I have devoted much time to the study of the Opium Habit in all its forms. During the war, and in an active practice since then, I have been favored with many opportunities for successfully observing opium cases. I have conversed and corresponded with thousands of victims of the habit and have thus been able to arrive at practical conclusions concerning the pathology and treatment of this disease. For many years I entertained the popular ideas of the profession upon this subject; but extended research and personal observations have given me a more accurate and certain knowledge of its nature and results. It is because the habit is so little understood, and an urgent need exists for the latest scientific and medical information concerning it, that I have written the following pages. They contain no idle theories, but are replete with practical facts. I have written for the people as well as the profession, in the hope that the unwary may be fully warned against a vice which is so delusive and dangerous. The members of the profession will, I trust, find in this volume a help in the treatment of opiumania and morphism; while to the myriad victims of the drug it will open a door of hope which will lead them into the perfect sunshine of liberty and health. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drugs That Enslave: The Opium, Morphine, Chloral and Hashisch Habits The idea of writing this little work was first suggested to me by the numerous letters received from physicians at home and abroad, asking for information on various points connected with the symptomatology, prognosis and treatment of the various "habits." While manifesting an earnest desire to become acquainted with the main features of the conditions in question, many presented a lamentable ignorance of the simple facts relating to them. These facts I have endeavored to present in as comprehensive, yet concise, a form as possible. But little space has been devoted to the study of the hashisch habit, owing to its rarity in this country. The statements as to the dangers and peculiarities of these conditions, aside from what I have myself observed, are based upon the literature of the subject, and the letters of nearly a thousand correspondents in various parts of the world, to whom I take this occasion for returning my hearty thanks. Book Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic

Download or read book Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Book Creating the American Junkie

Download or read book Creating the American Junkie written by Caroline Jean Acker and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2006-01-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heroin was only one drug among many that worried Progressive Era anti-vice reformers, but by the mid-twentieth century, heroin addiction came to symbolize irredeemable deviance. Creating the American Junkie examines how psychiatrists and psychologists produced a construction of opiate addicts as deviants with inherently flawed personalities caught in the grip of a dependency from which few would ever escape. Their portrayal of the tough urban addict helped bolster the federal government's policy of drug prohibition and created a social context that made the life of the American heroin addict, or junkie, more, not less, precarious in the wake of Progressive Era reforms. Weaving together the accounts of addicts and researchers, Acker examines how the construction of addiction in the early twentieth century was strongly influenced by the professional concerns of psychiatrists seeking to increase their medical authority; by the disciplinary ambitions of pharmacologists to build a drug development infrastructure; and by the American Medical Association's campaign to reduce prescriptions of opiates and to absolve physicians in private practice from the necessity of treating difficult addicts as patients. In contrast, early sociological studies of heroin addicts formed a basis for criticizing the criminalization of addiction. By 1940, Acker concludes, a particular configuration of ideas about opiate addiction was firmly in place and remained essentially stable until the enormous demographic changes in drug use of the 1960s and 1970s prompted changes in the understanding of addiction—and in public policy.

Book Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment

Download or read book Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment written by Committee on Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-02-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly three decades, methadone hydrochloride has been the primary means of treating opiate addiction. Today, about 115,000 people receive such treatment, and thousands more have benefited from it in the past. Even though methadone's effectiveness has been well established, its use remains controversial, a fact reflected by the extensive regulation of its manufacturing, labeling, distribution, and use. The Food and Drug Administration regulates the safety and effectiveness of methadone, as it does for all drugs, and the Drug Enforcement Administration regulates it as a controlled substance. However, methadone is also subjected to a unique additional tier of regulation that prescribes how and under what circumstances it may be used to treat opiate addiction. Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment examines current Department of Health and Human Services standards for narcotic addiction treatment and the regulation of methadone treatment programs pursuant to those standards. The book includes an evaluation of the effect of federal regulations on the provision of methadone treatment services and an exploration of options for modifying the regulations to allow optimal clinical practice. The volume also includes an assessment of alternatives to the existing regulations.

Download or read book Drug Addiction I written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the general problem of drug addiction from several points of view, which are in some ways quite unique and different from other areas of pharmacology. Drug addiction is closely associated with criminal behavior. One of the great and noble edifices of civilization is the philosophic and ethical view that man is perfectible, and some believe that this can be achieved by providing the appropriate circumstance or environment in which man can mature and be educated. Some have postulated that drug abuse is a consequence of an inadequate or pathologic set of socializing experiences or is a consequence of basic conflicts between the values and accepted patterns of behavior of a subculture and that of a larger culture. The degree to which man is malleable and perfectible by social forces is not known nor do we know the true desirability of socializing individuals to the extent that their behavior does not deviate from social norms. Some deviancy is essential for innovation and creativity, and at times there may be difficulties in determining whether an innovator or creator is exhibiting sociopathic behavior or not. This aspect of drug addiction is inherently a matter of social values and ethics.
