Book The Learned Blacksmith The Letters and Journals of Elihu Burritt

Download or read book The Learned Blacksmith The Letters and Journals of Elihu Burritt written by Merle Curti and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This antique book contains a collection of letters and journal entries, from Elihu Burritt. Elihu Burritt was a poor boy. Like other boys a hundred years ago, he gloried in the idea of self-improvement, and like many of his contemporaries he became a self-made man. But it was not worldly riches that he made. His lifelong ideal was to serve man kind, to promote human brotherhood, and he was never tempted to take another path. Unlike most Americans, he had no ambition to rise above the working class from which he came. This fascinating text will appeal to those with an interest in the early twentieth century, and will be of considerable value to collectors of such literature. The chapters of this book include: 'A Self-Made Man', 'The Crusade for World Peace', 'The Campaign for Ocean Penny Postage', 'Slavery and Civil War', and 'Assisted Emigration and Arbitration'. This volume was first published in 1937, and is proudly republished now for the enjoyment and edification of discerning readers.

Download or read book Strange Fatality written by James Elliott and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a spring morning in 1813 the largest amphibious force in American history to that point - nearly 6,000 troops aboard 140 vessels - stormed ashore near the mouth of the Niagara River, routed the British garrison and captured Fort George. It was a textbook operation, the second consecutive American victory, and a promising sign that events of 1813 would redress the military calamities of 1812. The badly mauled British army, short of provisions and ammunition, reeled westward, its leadership uncertain where or how the retreat would end. The American forces were poised to deliver the critical body blow the War Hawks in Congress dreamed of when they predicted a four-week war to seize Britain's remaining colonies. The fate of Upper Canada hung in the balance. Ten days later, in a field near the hamlet of Stoney Creek, the promise of that triumph was smashed in a terrifying night action the outcome of which hinged on a single bayonet charge that carried the American artillery and decapitated the invading army. Little known or appreciated, Stoney Creek was one of the most decisive reversals of military fortune in the War of 1812 and in no small measure determined the fate of the colony that would become Ontario. Journalist and author James Elliott has compellingly reconstructed the chain of events. From the rise to brigadier general of Maine blacksmith John Chandler, to the Highland heroics of Alexander Fraser, Strange Fatality explores the dynamics of a battle that stemmed the tide of invasion, cost two generals their freedom and unseated the highest-ranking soldier in the American army. Book excerpt: ‘KUMBA AFRICA’, is a compilation of African Short Stories written as fiction by Sampson Ejike Odum, nostalgically taking our memory back several thousands of years ago in Africa, reminding us about our past heritage. It digs deep into the traditional life style of the Africans of old, their beliefs, their leadership, their courage, their culture, their wars, their defeat and their victories long before the emergence of the white man on the soil of Africa. As a talented writer of rich resource and superior creativity, armed with in-depth knowledge of different cultures and traditions in Africa, the Author throws light on the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa when civilization was yet unknown to the people. The book reminds the readers that the Africans of old kept their pride and still enjoyed their own lives. They celebrated victories when wars were won, enjoyed their New yam festivals and villages engaged themselves in seasonal wrestling contest etc; Early morning during harmattan season, they gathered firewood and made fire inside their small huts to hit up their bodies from the chilling cold of the harmattan. That was the Africa of old we will always remember. In Africa today, the story have changed. The people now enjoy civilized cultures made possible by the influence of the white man through his scientific and technological process. Yet there are some uncivilized places in Africa whose people haven’t tested or felt the impact of civilization. These people still maintain their ancient traditions and culture. In everything, we believe that days when people paraded barefooted in Africa to the swarmp to tap palm wine and fetch firewood from there farms are almost fading away. The huts are now gradually been replaced with houses built of blocks and beautiful roofs. Thanks to modern civilization. Donkeys and camels are no longer used for carrying heavy loads for merchants. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.
