Year after year, administrators recorded, in frightening detail, the whereabouts of the poorest individuals in monthly and yearly rosters, assigning tiny parcels of land to countless prebend holders and starvation rations to even more numerous estate slaves. The texts published in this volume--dating from the time of the Third Dynasty of Ur (ca. 2100-2000 BC)--attest to the immense investment of the ancient rulers in managing their subjects. This volume presents editions of two hundred and twenty-four cuneiform tablets selected from the Schøyen Collection, the vast majority of which have not been previously published. The ancient provenience for these texts is primarily Umma, with other core provinces represented in smaller numbers, such as notable contributions from ancient Adab, which is underrepresented in the published record. In order to provide a fuller picture of the administration of the Ur III state, a number of texts from other collections, both published and unpublished, have been integrated into this volume. Accompanied by Jacob L. Dahl's precise translations, extensive commentary, and exhaustive indexes, this volume presents extensive new data on prosopography, economy, accounting procedures, letters, contracts, technical terminology, and agriculture that adds significantly to our knowledge of society and the economy during the Third Dynasty of Ur. An important contribution to the study of the Ur III period, in particular for Assyriology, this volume will serve as a useful handbook for scholars and students alike.

An Ox of One’s Own will be of interest to Assyriologists, particularly those interested in Early Mesopotamia, and scholars working on women in religion. An Ox of One’s Own centers on the archive of a woman who died about 2050 B.C., one of King Shulgi’s many wives. Her birth name is unknown, but when she married, she became Shulgi-simti, “Suitable for Shulgi.” Attested for only about 15 years, she existed among a court filled with other wives, who probably outranked her. A religious foundation was run on her behalf whereby courtiers, male and female, donated livestock for sacrifices to an unusual mix of goddesses and gods. Previous scholarship has declared this a rare example of a queen conducting women’s religion, perhaps unusual because they say she came from abroad. The conclusions of this book are quite different. An Ox of One’s Own lays out the evidence that another woman was queen at this time in Nippur while Shulgi-simti lived in Ur and was a third-ranking concubine at best, with few economic resources. Shulgi-simti’s religious exercises concentrated on a quartet of north Babylonian goddesses.

Workshops devoted to the Ur III period have been a feature of the Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale roughly every other year, beginning in London in 2003. In 2009, Steve Garfinkle and Manuel Molina asked the community of Neo-Sumerian scholars to convene the following year in Madrid before the Rencontre in Barcelona. The meeting had more than 50 participants and included 8 topical sessions and 27 papers. The 21 contributions included in this volume cover a broad range of topics: new texts, new interpretations, and new understandings of the language, culture, and history of the Ur III period (2112–2004 B.C.). The present and future of Neo-Sumerian studies are important not only for the field of Assyriology but also for wider inquiries into the ancient world. The extant archives offer insight into some of the earliest cities and one of the earliest kingdoms in the historical record. The era of the Third Dynasty of Ur is also probably the best-attested century in antiquity. This imposes a responsibility on the small community of scholars who work on the Neo-Sumerian materials to make this it accessible to a broad, interdisciplinary audience in the humanities and related fields. This volume is a solid step in this direction.

Book excerpt: Anunnaki governor Ur-Nammu, who subsequently became an independent king (2113-2096 BC) and founded a spin-off dynasty known as the Third Dynasty of Ur (or Ur 3 period), lasted for more than a century (2113-2006 BC). Anunnaki civilization in its most advanced form showed a more compact Anunnaki empire than Sargon of Agade. Over a hundred thousand cuneiform tablets from this period, depicting gods and descendants of Nibiru, indicate the existence of a highly organized bureaucratic society. References to the Anunnaki became obsessive. On one tablet, an exact count of Anunnaki Deities (2,740 in total), although only 96 were worshipped as Gods, was added to the Anunnaki realm. Anunnaki was even recorded as returning to Nibiru to celebrate a festival in documents found on Nibiru. As archaeology indicates, as widespread evidence of Anunnaki Temple activities show, it was an era of considerable material prosperity despite or perhaps because of this sophisticated Anunnaki worship. Ur-Nammu himself, the founder of the Anunnaki dynasty, built or rebuilt temples in several ancient cities, including Erech, Lagash, Nippur, and Eridu, but especially at his Anunnaki capital, Ur. He rebuilt the ziggurat here, a massive rectangular stepped tower about two hundred feet by 150 feet at the base and perhaps 70 feet high, with a shrine at the top, as a tribute to the moon-doing deity Nanna. Sir Leonard Woolley uncovered this ziggurat in 1923 after it had been repaired by later kings and restored by later kings. It remains a monument to Ur-Nammu's piety. Several Anunnaki temple-building calculations have been made possible due to chance references to writings of the period. Although it was not the largest temple in Sumer, a temple built at Umma in the reign of Ur-Nammu's third successor Shu-sin took at least seven years to complete. The building was constructed with nearly nine million large and seventeen million small bricks. We know from a tablet that a brickmaker could make eighty bricks a day, so simple arithmetic shows that the bricks for this temple would have taken a thousand Igigi workers for nearly a year to manufacture.

Book excerpt: While each of the previously known archives from the Third Dynasty of Ur has provided distinct views of Sumerian society, those from Iri-Saĝrig present an extraordinary range of new sources, depicting a cosmopolitan Sumerian/Akkadian city unlike any other from this period. In this publication, Marcel Sigrist and Tohru Ozaki present more than two thousand newly identified tablets, mostly from Iri-Saĝrig. This unique and extensive corpus elucidates the importance that Iri-Saĝrig represented politically, militarily, and culturally in Sumer. Although these tablets were not able to be cleaned, baked, or photographed, the authors’ transliterations are based on the original tablets, often after repeated collations. Moreover, access to so many well-preserved tablets made it possible to improve upon the readings and interpretations offered in previous publications. Volume 1 contains a catalog and classification of the texts by provenance, a list of month names and year formulas, another of inscriptions, a chronological listing of the texts, and extensive indexes of personal names, deities, toponyms, and selected words and phrases. Volume 2 presents the texts in transliteration with substantial commentary. This two-volume publication preserves and makes available to the scholarly community a significant segment of Iraq’s cultural legacy that otherwise might have been ignored or even lost. It will augment and enhance our understanding of the unique civilization of Mesopotamia in the late third millennium BCE.
