Book Shear Deformation in Heterogeneous Anisotropic Plates

Download or read book Shear Deformation in Heterogeneous Anisotropic Plates written by J. M. Whitney and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bending theory for anisotropic laminated plates developed by Yang, Norris, and Stavsky is investigated. The theory includes shear deformation and rotary inertia in the same manner as Mindlin's theory for isotropic homogeneous plates. The governing equations reveal that unsymmetrically laminated plates display the same bending-extensional coupling phenomenon found in classical laminated plate theory based on the Kirchhoff assumptions. Solutions are presented for bending under transverse load and for flexural vibration frequencies of symmetrical and nonsymmetrical laminates. Good agreement is observed in numerical results for plate bending as compared to exact solutions obtained from classical elasticity theory. For certain fiber reinforced composite materials, radical departure from classical laminated plate theory is indicated. (Author-PL).

Book Asymptotic Theory Of Anisotropic Plates And Shells

Download or read book Asymptotic Theory Of Anisotropic Plates And Shells written by Lenser A Aghalovyan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A consistent theory for thin anisotropic layered structures is developed starting from asymptotic analysis of 3D equations in linear elasticity. The consideration is not restricted to the traditional boundary conditions along the faces of the structure expressed in terms of stresses, originating a new type of boundary value problems, which is not governed by the classical Kirchhoff-Love assumptions. More general boundary value problems, in particular related to elastic foundations are also studied. The general asymptotic approach is illustrated by a number of particular problems for elastic and thermoelastic beams and plates. For the latter, the validity of derived approximate theories is investigated by comparison with associated exact solution. The author also develops an asymptotic approach to dynamic analysis of layered media composed of thin layers motivated by modeling of engineering structures under seismic excitation.

Book Propagation of Discontinuities in Heterogeneous Anisotropic Plates

Download or read book Propagation of Discontinuities in Heterogeneous Anisotropic Plates written by A. S. D. Wang and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastic stress waves propagating in thin, laminated composite plates are analyzed on the basis of a lamination theory based on the Kirchhoff assumptions, but including effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia. The individual layers comprising the palte are assumed to possess different thicknesses and material properties. Each layer may be arbitrarily anisotropic. Thus, a general coupling in shear, bending, twisting and extensional effects is present in the plate constitutive relations, resulting in simultaneously coupled stress waves propagating in the plane of the plate. Numerical examples involving laminated fiber-reinforced composite plates are presented. (Author, modified-PL).

Book Composite Structures 4

Download or read book Composite Structures 4 written by I.H. Marshall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained herein were presented at the Fourth International Conference on Composite Structures (ICCS/4) held at Paisley ColIege of Technology, Scotland in July 1987. The Conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College of Technology. It was co-sponsored by the Scottish Development Agency, the National Engineering Laboratory, the US Air Force European Office of Aerospace Research and Development and the US Army Research, Development and Standardisation Group- UK. It forms a natural and ongoing progression from the highly successful First, Second and Third International Conferences on Composite Structures (ICCS/I, ICCS/2 and ICCS/3) held at Paisley in 1981, 1983 and 1985 respectively. There is little doubt that composite materials are rightfulIy claiming a prominent role in structural engineering in the widest sense. Moreover, the range and variety of useful composites has expanded to a level inconceivable a decade ago. However, it is also true that this increasing utilisation has generated an enhanced awareness of the manifold factors which dictate the integrity of composite structures. This is indeed a healthy attitude to a relatively new dimension in structural engineering which will have an increasingly dominant role as the century progresses. Both the diversity of application of composites in structural engineering and the endeavours which wilI ensure their fitness for purpose are reflected herein.

Book Theoretical Experimental and Numerical Contributions to the Mechanics of Fluids and Solids

Download or read book Theoretical Experimental and Numerical Contributions to the Mechanics of Fluids and Solids written by James Casey and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue of ZAMP is published to honor Paul M. Naghdi for his contributions to mechanics over the last forty years and more. It is offered in celebration of his long, productive career in continuum mechan ics; a career which has been marked by a passion for the intrinsic beauty of the subject, an uncompromising adherence to academic standards, and an untiring devotion to our profession. Originally, this issue was planned in celebration of Naghdi's 70th birthday, which occurred on 29 March 1994. But, as the papers were being prepared for the press, it became evident that the illness from which Professor Naghdi had been suffering during recent months was extremely serious. On 26 May 1994, a reception took place in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Berkeley, at which Naghdi received The Berkeley Citation (which is given in lieu of an honorary degree) and where he was also presented with the Table of Contents of the present collection. Subse quently, he had the opportunity to read the papers in manuscript form. He was very touched that his colleagues had chosen to honor him with their fine contributions. The knowledge that he was held in such high esteem by his fellow scientists brought a special pleasure and consolation to him in his last weeks. On Saturday evening, 9 July 1994, Paul Naghdi succumbed to the lung cancer which he had so courageously endured.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained herein were presented at the First International Conference on Composite Structures held at Paisley College of Technology, Paisley, Scotland, in September 1981. This conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College of Technology in association with The Institution of Mechanical Engineers and The National Engineering Laboratory (UK). There can be little doubt that, within engineering circles, the use of composite materials has revolutionised traditional design concepts. The ability to tailor-make a material to suit prevailing environmental conditions whilst maintaining adequate reinforcement to withstand applied loading is unquestionably an attractive proposition. Significant weight savings can also be achieved by virtue of the high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight characteristics of, for example, fibrous forms of composite materials. Such savings are clearly of paramount importance in transportation engineering and in particular aircraft and aerospace applications. Along with this considerable structural potential the engineer must accept an increased complexity of analysis. All too often in the past this has dissuaded the designer from considering composite materials as a viable, or indeed better, alternative to traditional engineering materials. Inherent prejudices within the engineering profession have also contributed, in no small way, to a certain wariness in appreciating the merits of composites. However, the potential benefits of composite materials are inescapable. The last two decades have seen a phenomenal increase in the use of composites in virtually every area of engineering, from the high technology v vi Preface aerospace application to the less demanding structural cladding situation.
