Chapter IV contains the theory of the commutator subalgebra of a simple subalgebra of a normal simple algebra, the study of automorphisms of a simple algebra, splitting fields, and the index reduction factor theory. The fifth chapter contains the foundation of the theory of crossed products and of their special case, cyclic algebras. The theory of exponents is derived there as well as the consequent factorization of normal division algebras into direct factors of prime-power degree. Chapter VI consists of the study of the abelian group of cyclic systems which is applied in Chapter VII to yield the theory of the structure of direct products of cyclic algebras and the consequent properties of norms in cyclic fields. This chapter is closed with the theory of $p$-algebras. In Chapter VIII an exposition is given of the theory of the representations of algebras. The treatment is somewhat novel in that while the recent expositions have used representation theorems to obtain a number of results on algebras, here the theorems on algebras are themselves used in the derivation of results on representations. The presentation has its inspiration in the author's work on the theory of Riemann matrices and is concluded by the introduction to the generalization (by H. Weyl and the author) of that theory. The theory of involutorial simple algebras is derived in Chapter X both for algebras over general fields and over the rational field. The results are also applied in the determination of the structure of the multiplication algebras of all generalized Riemann matrices, a result which is seen in Chapter XI to imply a complete solution of the principal problem on Riemann matrices.

The book then proves the Schmidt-Ore theorem, and also describes linear algebra, as well as the Birkhoff-Witt theorem on Lie algebras. The text also addresses ordered groups, the Archimedean groups and rings, and Albert's theorem on normed algebras. This book can prove useful for algebra students and for professors of algebra and advanced mathematicians.

It has been an exciting and ever-growing subject from the beginning, starting even before R. Borcherds introduced the precise mathematical notion of "vertex algebra" in the 1980s [BI]. Having developed in conjunction with string theory in theoretical physics and with the theory of "monstrous moonshine" and infinite-dimensional Lie algebra theory in mathematics, vertex (operator) algebra theory is qualitatively different from traditional algebraic theories, reflecting the "nonclassical" nature of string theory and of monstrous moonshine. The theory has revealed new perspectives that were unavailable without it, and continues to do so. "Monstrous moonshine" began as an astonishing set of conjectures relating the Monster finite simple group to the theory of modular functions in number theory. As is now known, vertex operator algebra theory is a foundational pillar of monstrous moonshine. With the theory available, one can formulate and try to solve new problems that have far-reaching implications in a wide range of fields that had not previously been thought of as being related. This book systematically introduces the theory of vertex (operator) algebras from the beginning, using "formal calculus," and takes the reader through the fundamental theory to the detailed construction of examples. The axiomatic foundations of vertex operator algebras and modules are studied in detail, general construction theorems for vertex operator algebras and modules are presented, and the most basic families of vertex operator algebras are constructed and their irreducible modules are constructed and are also classified. The construction theorems for algebras and modules are based on a study of representations of a vertex operator algebra, as opposed to modules for the algebra, as developed in [Li3]. A significant feature of the theory is that in general, the construction of modules for (or representations of) a vertex operator algebra is in some sense more subtle than the construction of the algebra itself. In 1981 the course "Additional chapters in algebra" replaced the course "Gen eral algebra" which was founded by A. G. Kurosh (1908-1971), professor and head of the department of higher algebra for a period of several decades. The material of this course formed the basis of A. G. Kurosh's well-known book "Lectures on general algebra" (Moscow,1962; 2-nd edition: Moscow, Nauka, 1973) and the book "General algebra. Lectures of 1969-1970. " (Moscow, Nauka, 1974). Another book based on the course, "Elements of general al gebra" (M. : Nauka, 1983) was published by L. A. Skorniakov, professor, now deceased, in the same department. It should be noted that A. G. Kurosh was not only the lecturer for the course "General algebra" but he was also the recognized leader of the scientific school of the same name. It is difficult to determine the limits of this school; however, the "Lectures . . . " of 1962 men tioned above contain some material which exceed these limits. Eventually this effect intensified: the lectures of the course were given by many well-known scientists, and some of them see themselves as "general algebraists". Each lecturer brought significant originality not only in presentation of the material but in the substance of the course. Therefore not all material which is now accepted as necessary for algebraic students fits within the scope of general algebra.

In these papers they have studied the structure of algebras which later were called von Neu mann algebras or W* -algebras. They are weakly closed complex *-algebras of operators on a Hilbert space. At present the theory of von Neumann algebras is a deeply developed theory with various applications. In the framework of von Neumann algebras theory the study of fac tors (i.e. W* -algebras with trivial centres) is very important, since they are comparatively simple and investigation of general W* -algebras can be reduced to the case of factors. Therefore the theory of factors is one of the main tools in the structure theory of von Neumann algebras. In the middle of sixtieth Topping [To 1] and Stormer [S 2] have ini tiated the study of Jordan (non associative and real) analogues of von Neumann algebras - so called JW-algebras, i.e. real linear spaces of self adjoint opera.tors on a complex Hilbert space, which contain the identity operator 1. closed with respect to the Jordan (i.e. symmetrised) product INTRODUCTION 2 x 0 y = ~(Xy + yx) and closed in the weak operator topology. The structure of these algebras has happened to be close to the struc ture of von Neumann algebras and it was possible to apply ideas and meth ods similar to von Neumann algebras theory in the study of JW-algebras.
