Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thoroughly revised and updated second edition, a panel of distinguished clinical researchers from around the world takes stock of the wealth of new knowledge about the human spleen and applies it to the pathology and treatment of splenic diseases. This much enriched understanding encompasses the spleen's complex role in immunological defense, the recently defined function of particulate filtration by the spleen, and the structural basis for the functions of the spleen, most particularly the microvasculature around which it is organized. Among the diseases and disorders of the spleen considered in detail are splenomegaly, the consequences and management of hyper- and hyposplenism, and "dilutional anemia." Recent advances in splenic surgery are also reviewed, especially those techniques intended to preserve at least partial function while removing the greater part of the organ.

Book excerpt: The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) was estab lished in 1978 to stimulate and support scientific research and educational programs related to nutrition, toxicology, and food safety, and to encourage cooperation in these programs among scientists in universities, industry, and government agencies to assist in the resolution of health and safety issues. To supplement and enhance these efforts, ILSI has made a major commitment to supporting programs to harmon ize toxicologic testing, to advance a more uniform inter pretation of bioassay results worldwide, to promote a common understanding of lesion classifications, and to encourage wide discussion of these topics among scien tists. The Monographs on the Pathology of Laboratory Ani mals are designed to facilitate communication among those involved in the safety testing of foods, drugs, and chemicals. The complete set will cover all organ systems and is intended for use by pathologists, toxicologists, and others concerned with evaluating toxicity and carcinogen icity studies. The international nature of the project - as reflected in the composition of the editorial board and the diversity of the authors and editors - strengthens our ex pectations that understanding and cooperation will be im proved worldwide through the series. Alex Malaspina President International Life Sciences Institute Preface This book, on the hemopoietic system, is the eighth volume of a set prepared under the sponsorship of the International Life Sciences In stitute (ILSI).

Book The Making of Mr Gray s Anatomy

Download or read book The Making of Mr Gray s Anatomy written by Ruth Richardson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gray's Anatomy is probably one of the most iconic scientific books ever published: an illustrated textbook of anatomy that is still a household name 150 years since its first edition, known for its rigorously scientific text, and masterful illustrations as beautiful as they are detailed. The Making of Mr Gray's Anatomy tells the story of the creation of this remarkable book, and the individuals who made it happen: Henry Gray, the bright and ambitious physiologist, poised for medical fame and fortune, who was the book's author; Carter, the brilliant young illustrator, lacking Gray's social advantages, shy and inclined to religious introspection; and the publishers - Parkers, father and son, the father eager to employ new technology, the son part of a lively circle of intellectuals. It is the story of changing attitudes in the mid-19th century; of the social impact of science, the changing status of medicine; of poverty and class; of craftsmanship and technology. And it all unfolds in the atmospheric milieu of Victorian London - taking the reader from the smart townhouses of Belgravia, to the dissection room of St George's Hospital, and to the workhouses and mortuaries where we meet the friendless poor who would ultimately be immortalised in Carter's engravings. Alongside the story of the making of the book itself, Ruth Richardson reflects on what made Gray's Anatomy such a unique intellectual, artistic, and cultural achievement - how it represented a summation of a long half century's blossoming of anatomical knowledge and exploration, and how it appeared just at the right time to become the 'Doctor's Bible' for generations of medics to follow.

Book Scanning Electron Microscopy of Vascular Casts Methods and Applications

Download or read book Scanning Electron Microscopy of Vascular Casts Methods and Applications written by P. Motta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, attention has been called to the role that microvascular organization plays in the functional morphology of all organs and tissues, both in normal and pathological conditions. Since its development by Murakami, the corrosion cast method for scanning electron microscopy has come to be considered one of the most efficient means in clarifying the three-dimensional features of the microcirculation of organs and tissues. Scanning Electron Microscopy of Vascular Casts: Methods and Applications was planned to supply fundamental and new information regarding microcirculation studies to general biologists, anatomists, pathologists and clinicians. The contributions to this volume, contain original findings and excellent electron micrographs obtained by using recently improved corrosion cast methods. The rich variety of papers in this book will be useful to many, and will provide both the basic and clinically oriented readers with good ideas, suggestions, and original and worthwhile information.

  • ISBN : 3642006485
  • Pages : 365 pages

Download or read book Nuclear Hepatology written by Gerbail T. Krishnamurthy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-23 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition of Nuclear Hepatology almost 10 years ago, new advances have taken place, both in our understanding of liver pathophysiology and various imaging modalities. A unique feature of imaging of physiology is that it enables quanti- cation. Since liver physiology is complex, quantification has been a challenge. Many p- lications in the past have often included quantification based on home-made software not available for others. Thus, the comparison of results from one center to another becomes difficult, if not impossible. The second edition of Nuclear Hepatology addresses these issues. Sophisticated software for liver and gallbladder function has been tested and va- dated through many of our previous publications. Now that software is FDA approved and available for others through a commercial company, it is hoped that future publications of imaging of liver and gallbladder physiology would routinely include quantification. Although the function of the hepatocyte is complex, it can be broadly divided into two main categories, substrate uptake at the basolateral border and intracellular transit prior to excretion into the canaliculi. The earliest manifestation of hepatocellular injury occurs in the form of prolongation of the intracellular transit time, which occurs long before the disruption of the basolateral border with subsequent rupture and death. The liver enzymes are released into circulation after the death of the hepatocyte.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galen of Pergamon, was a prominent Roman physician, surgeon and philosopher. The most accomplished of all medical researchers of antiquity, Galen contributed greatly to the understanding of numerous scientific disciplines, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and neurology, as well as philosophy and logic. Galen's understanding of anatomy and medicine was principally influenced by the then current theory of humorism, as advanced by many ancient Greek physicians such as Hippocrates. His theories dominated and influenced Western medical science for more than 1,300 years. Medical students continued to study Galen's writings until well into the 19th century. Galen conducted many nerve ligation experiments that supported the theory, which is still accepted today that the brain controls all the motions of the muscles by means of the cranial and peripheral nervous systems.
