Book On the Sonnets of Robert Frost

Download or read book On the Sonnets of Robert Frost written by H.A. Maxson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The sonnet is the strictest form I have behaved in, and only then by pretending it wasn't a sonnet," Frost once wrote to Louis Untermeyer. Frost wrote his sonnets in couplets, triplets, and terza rima; frequently, he combined elements of the Italian and English forms. His genuis was in incorporating diverse styles, renewing reader interest in the form while retaining its accessibility. Several of the sonnets discussed are generally recognized as among the finest poems written in the twentieth century. This is the first work to examine all the 37 poems published that are, based on the poet's own prose writings on the subject, defined as true sonnets. It also provides a discussion of why some Frost works commonly accepted as sonnets do not meet his own criteria. Of course, the book provides content analyses of the sonnets with discussions of the various structures used.

Book Robert Frost Sixteen Poems to Learn by Heart

Download or read book Robert Frost Sixteen Poems to Learn by Heart written by Robert Frost and published by Library of America. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrate Robert Frost's 150th birthday with a deluxe keepsake edition featuring 16 of his greatest poems—with brilliant essays highlighting his special genius and the power of memorization to unlock the magic of his language During a public reading Robert Frost was once asked why he so frequently recited his poems from memory. With typical wit, he replied: “If they won’t stick to me, I won’t stick to them.” Remarkably among the modern poets, his poems “stick” to the reader: "Mending Wall," with its famous invocation of the rural maxim "Good fences make good neighbors" "The Road Not Taken," about the beguiling possibilities of life "Birches," which reminds us that "One could do worse than be a swinger of birches "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," with its unforgettable final line: "And miles to go before I sleep." Here, poet and Frost biographer Jay Parini presents these and 12 other Frost poems to learn by heart. In short accompanying commentaries, Parini illuminates the stylistic and imaginative features of each of the poems, drawing in biographical material from Frost’s life to provide further context. “The goal of this little book is to encourage readers to slow down—to listen to Frost’s words and phrases, to locate their deepest rhythms, and hear the tune of each poem as it unfolds. . . . Memorizing a poem can teach us much about a poem’s structure and argument, and about the resonance of particular words. And best of all, memorization makes a poem part of our inner lives. Once committed to memory, a poem is available to us for recall at any time—and the occasions for remembering it will make themselves known to us. It isn’t something we have to work at.” Anyone who has read and loved Frost’s poetry will want to own and treasure this little gift edition. Those reading Frost for the first time or those wishing to become better acquainted with one of America’s greatest poets will not find a better, more insightful guide than Jay Parini.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writing this book, my intention is to fill a need not met by any of the excellent critical books and collections of essays about Robert Frost's poems. A few of these books provide analysis of up to 50 or 60 of Frost's poems. But none offers, as this work does, a basic commonsensical explication of all 355 poems in The Poetry of Robert Frost (1969), edited by Edward Connery Lathem, now the standard collection of Frost's poems. - from the Introduction by the author.

Book excerpt: Selected Poems (1923) is a collection of poems by American poet Robert Frost. Dedicated to Edward Thomas, a friend of Frost’s and an important English poet who died toward the end of the First World War, Selected Poems is a wonderful sampling of poems from Frost’s early collections, including A Boy’s Will and North of Boston. Known for his plainspoken language and dedication to the images and rhythms of rural New England, Robert Frost is one of America’s most iconic poets, a voice to whom generations of readers have turned in search of beauty, music, and life. “Mowing” envisions the poet’s work through the prism of rural labor. “There was never a sound beside the wood but one / And that was my long scythe whispering to the ground. / What was it it whispered?” The speaker does not know, but continues his task, hypnotized by its rhythm and simple music. In “After Apple-Picking,” as fall gives over to winter, the poet remembers in dreams how the “Magnified apples appear and disappear, / Stem end and blossom end” as he climbs the ladder into the heart of the tree. Both a symbol for life and a metaphor for the poetic act, apple picking leaves the poet “overtired / Of the great harvest [he himself] desired”, awaiting sleep as he describes “its coming on,” wondering what, if anything, it will bring. “The Road Not Taken,” perhaps Frost’s most famous poem, is a meditation on fate and free will that follows a traveler in an autumn landscape, unsure of which path to take, but certain he cannot stand still. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Robert Frost’s Selected Poems is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book excerpt: Mountain Interval (1916) is a collection of poems by American poet Robert Frost. Having gained success with his first two collections, both published in London, Frost returned home to New Hampshire and completed his third volume, Mountain Interval. The book opens with “The Road Not Taken,” and though this would become Frost’s most famous poem, the collection is not defined by it. Here we find the hallmarks of Frost’s work: rural landscapes, dramatic monologues, and subtle meditations on the meanings of life and art. This is Frost at the height of his power, a poetry that speaks as much and as often as it listens. “The Road Not Taken” is a meditation on fate and free will that follows a traveler in an autumn landscape, unsure of which path to take, but certain he cannot stand still. Often summarized using only its final two lines—“I took the one less traveled by, / And that has made all the difference”—Frost’s poem refuses such neat categorization. Far from simple praise of independence, “The Road Not Taken” examines the anxiety of choice, the psychic response to the uncertainty that precedes even the simplest decision. In “Birches,” Frost recalls his childhood fondness for climbing trees, raising himself from the ground “To the top branches,” only to fling himself “outward, feet first” back to earth. Against the backdrop of adulthood, in which “life is too much like a pathless wood,” the poet recalls the simplicity and wonder of being a child in nature, no more and no less than “a swinger of birches.”. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Robert Frost’s Mountain Interval is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.
