Book Secondary Instability in Boundary Layer Flows

Download or read book Secondary Instability in Boundary Layer Flows written by Ali H. Nayfeh and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stability of a secondary Tollmien-Schlichting wave, whose wavenumber and frequency are nearly one half of those of a fundamental Tollmien-Schlichting instability wave (T-S wave), is analyzed by using the method of multiples. Under these conditions, the fundamental wave acts as a parametric excitor for the secondary wave. When the amplitude of the fundamental wave is small, the amplitude of the secondary wave deviates slowly from its unexcited state. However, as the amplitude of the fundamental wave increases, so does the amplitude of the secondary wave even in the regions where it is damped in the unexcited state. (Author).

Book Nonlinear Development of Gortler and Crossflow Vortices and Gortler Tollmien Schlichting Wave Interaction

This book was released on 1990 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of nonlinear development of Goertler vortices on a curved wall is studied within the framework of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations which are solved by a Fourier-Chebyshev spectral method. The results show that higher harmonics grow due to nonlinear effects; however, most of the energy remains in the fundamental mode. The computed flow field in the presence of a Goertler vortex is in qualitative agreement with the experimental data. The interaction of the Goertler vortex with a two-dimensional Tollmien-Schlichting wave is also studied and it is shown that the Tollmien-Schlichting wave grows faster than its linear theory growth rate when the amplitude of the Goertler vortex is sufficiently large. Due to nonlinear effects this interaction further leads to the development of oblique waves with spanwise wavelength equal to the Goertler vortex wavelength. The numerical method is also applied to study the nonlinear development of a stationary crossflow vortex in a Falkner-Skan-Cooke boundary layer. The crossflow vortex develops in a manner similar to that found earlier for rotating disk flow. The fundamental and the higher harmonics all tend to saturate when the integration is carried to large amplitudes. The computed velocity distribution clearly shows the emergence of the superharmonic which, however, does not dominate the fundamental mode. The Falkner-Skan-Cooke flow, modulated by the presence of the crossflow vortex, is found to be subject to a new secondary instability with large growth rates. (JHD).

Book Instability and Turbulent Bursting in the Boundary Layer

Download or read book Instability and Turbulent Bursting in the Boundary Layer written by Martin Lessen and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrodynamic stability and transition to turbulence is a central problem in fluid mechanics. The mechanism of the secondary instability adding three-dimensionality to the primary two dimensional Tollmien-Schlicting disturbance has been a matter of contention since the investigation of a convectively driven secondary disturbance by Goertler and Witting (1958) and interacting oblique Tollmien-Schlichting waves by Benney & Lin (1960). The present analysis is restricted to Blasius boundary layer flow and assumes that the primary Tollmien-Schlichting instability, the secondary Goertrler-Witting instability and the tertiary shearing layer instability occur serially for simplicity of analysis rather than the real life phenomenon of simultaneity. This paper studies the stability of the Blasius boundary layer with respect to a finite amplitude Tollmien-Schlichting wave. The stability with respect to a non-linear, convectively driven, cross streamwise periodic disturbance of the resulting flow is then studied and finally, the stability of the resulting localized shearing layers is studied. It is found that at large Reynolds number, the primary disturbance amplitude is about 8% and the secondary disturbance amplitude is about 27% of the free stream velocity.
