Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Road With a Circus The faithful recording of daily life with one of the "big shows," wandering with it under all vicissitudes, fortunate or adverse, is the errand on which this book is sent. You and I will travel from the distraction and tumult of the summer season to the congenial quiet of winter quarters, and survey operations from the hour when new and unwonted scenes and sounds startle city quiet or country seat retirement until the stealthy breaking of the white encampment and the departure from town. We will scrutinize the entrance of strangers into strange lands and observe the rising and expansion of the tents as an army of men stamp their image upon the earth. Our astonished eye will gaze upon the gorgeous pageant of the parade and returning to the grounds will peer freely and familiarly about the place of strange sounds and entrancing sights. We will watch the master mind of the circus and his associates in counsel and action. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Circus Memoirs The principal industry at Madison was the pork packing business, and more hogs were killed and packed there at that time than in Chicago. Madison had the first railway in the state, which was built to Indianapolis, the capital city. Up the hill from Madison was the heaviest railway grade in the world at that time. The principal freight that went over the road was brought down the Ohio river from Pittsburg by boats, transferred to rail at Madison and shipped into the interior of the state. The Reverend James Greenleaf, of Madison, cor responded with my father while he was in Boston and advised his going west. He wrote a glowing account of the possibilities in the quaint little place. On our' arrival we stopped with a family by the name of Merens until the necessary arrangements could be made to start housekeeping. This good couple did not have a family, and I often think of how they must have enjoyed four boys as full of life as we were. I fancy they did not regret being childless. One of the principal characters living in Madison was an old gentleman known by the name of Gundy Lawrence. He had been elected to the Legislature. When the time came to attend he rode to Indianapolis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the #1 internationally bestselling author of the “lush, evocative Gothic” (The New York Times Book Review) The Doll Factory comes an atmospheric and spectacular novel about a woman transformed by the arrival of a Victorian circus of wonders—“as moving as it is deeply entertaining” (Daniel Mason, New York Times bestselling author). Step up, step up! In 1860s England, circus mania is sweeping the nation. Crowds jostle for a glimpse of the lion-tamers, the dazzling trapeze artists and, most thrilling of all, the so-called “human wonders.” When Jasper Jupiter’s Circus of Wonders pitches its tent in a poor coastal town, the life of one young girl changes forever. Sold to the ringmaster as a “leopard girl” because of the birthmarks that cover her body, Nell is utterly devastated. But as she grows close to the other performers, she finds herself enchanted by the glittering freedom of the circus, and by her own role as the Queen of the Moon and Stars. Before long, Nell’s fame spreads across the world—and with it, a chance for Jasper Jupiter to grow his own name and fortune. But what happens when her fame begins to eclipse his own, when even Jasper’s loyal brother Toby becomes captivated by Nell? No longer the quiet flower-picker, Nell knows her own place in the world, and she will fight for it. Circus of Wonders is a beautiful story about the “complex dance between exploitation and empowerment, and the question of what it really means to have control over your own life” (Naomi Ishiguro, author of Escape Routes).

Among the scholars bending over their desks was Bertha, a little dark-haired girl, her black eyes fringed with long lashes. She Was twelve years old and was working for her first certificate. Morning and after noon she came to the school, sometimes brought by the maid, but more often by her mother. As a child she had always been petted and spoiled by her parents, who gave her all the candies and toys she wanted. Her little room was crowded with dolls and playthings of all sorts, each of which had its name. There were fair dolls, dark dolls, white dolls, black dolls, big dolls some even were life-size - fat dolls, thin dolls, little dolls, tiny dolls; there were jointed dolls, who opened and shut their eyes; there were dolls who could talk, and dolls who kept silent.
