Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Religious Office of the Universities The Papers which are collected in this little volume have been printed or reprinted at the desire of friends to whose judgment I feel constrained to yield. There is, I trust, a distinct unity of thought running through them, which corresponds with a deep conviction of the grandeur of the office of our ancient and religious Universities at the present crisis of national thought and life; and I should value no privilege more highly than to be able to convey what I feel on this subject to others, who may be able to regard it more completely and from other points of view. One circumstance perhaps may lend a value to the opinions which I have expressed to which they could not otherwise lay claim. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Episcopalian Demand for Christian Schools The introduction of religion into state schools in any form commensurate with the needs of the children is out of the question. Herein lies the hopelessness of the present situa tion; and the sooner this point is understood and conceded by all parties interested the sooner this most important of all subjects before Church and State today can be argued -to a finish. 'no Protestant, Roman Catholic, Jew, agnostic, or atheist is willing to be taxed to help some one else choose the religion which shall be taught his child. According to our theory of government, and we might say in the sight of God and men, this would not be fair; and therefore it cannot, and will not, be done. Download or read book Religious Activities at the University of Texas Classic Reprint written by University Of Texas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Activities at the University of Texas In the second place, it is equally evident that, in the face of these conditions, we can not hope to win the desired result unless we first look for the controlling factors, and then, with tolerance and faith, with slight regard for precedents and less for prejudice, seek by actual trial to find and foster the practical methods by which the moral and spiritual character of the institution may keep pace with its material and intellectual growth. Indeed, we may question whether the failure of any institution to measure up to the standard it has set is not due to the fact that, while adjust ing itself in other respects to the new relations, it has allowed once active spiritual forces to become atrophied, because the methods of applying them are not in accord with actual needs. Book Colleges Religious Institutions

Download or read book Colleges Religious Institutions written by Absalom Peters and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colleges Religious Institutions: A Discourse Delivered in the Park Presbyterian Church, Newark, Oct, 29, 1851 Before the Society for the Promotion of Collegiate and Theological Education at the West "The founding of Harvard College," they say, was an era in the history of the human race. It was the beginning of liberal education for a continent. Without a first College, this continent could not have become what it is. The planting of a first College in Africa will form another era. It will be a work equally rich in beneficial results, and equally honorable to the philanthropy that secures its accomplishment." I do not find fault with these statements. These are great thoughts, both of the past and the future - just and true thoughts. And it is well to think of things yet to be done, while we reflect upon the past, for instruction and encouragement. It is indeed the grand element and characteristic of wisdom always to be looking onward, and to labor for a worthy end. The end, in thought, is ever before the means. It is that for which all the means are selected, and is therefore first in purpose, though last in attainment. And the means employed for an end are important only in proportion to the importance of the end. The same may be said of the beginning of a thing, the "terminus a quo" as the old theologians expressed it, or the first of a series of means. Book Thoughts on the Admission of Persons

Download or read book Thoughts on the Admission of Persons written by Thomas Turton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on the Admission of Persons: Without Regard to Their Religious Opinions to Certain Degrees in the Universities of England It occurred to me not long ago - when turning in my mind the admission of persons to certain Academical Degrees, without any regard to religious tenets - that the sentiments of one who, for many years after he became a Master of Arts, filled the office of a College Tutor - has ever since devoted his time and attention to the service of the University - and, what is of some moment, has throughout life stood aloof from political contention - might deserve consideration, on a subject of that nature. Although I then felt that, on the grounds just stated, I should be warranted in publicly expressing the result of my reflections, on a point of so much importance, yet the sort of controversy, which had been excited, deterred me from taking such a step. I am however now satisfied that it would be a dereliction of duty, to suffer the occasion to pass away, without recording my opinions on the matter in dispute.
