Book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells written by N. Yamaki and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1984-02-01 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Download or read book Failure and Post Buckling Behavior of Thin Cylindrical Shells written by William S. Strickland and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents experimental data on the response of thin cylindrical shells to blast loads. Blast loading over cylindrical surfaces, failure, and buckling modes are examined in an effort to establish a base for post buckling and failure modelings. (Author).

Book Initial Postbuckling Behavior of Stiffened Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Initial Postbuckling Behavior of Stiffened Cylindrical Shells written by D. O. Brush and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory developed by W.T. Koiter for the initial postbuckling behavior of thin-walled shells is applied in an analysis of the imperfection sensitivity of ring-and-stringer stiffened cylinders subjected to axial compression. The cylinders are considered to be simply supported, and both eccentricity and torsional rigidity of stiffeners are taken into account. Values of a so-called imperfection sensitivity parameter are determined for particular stiffened cylinders, and the suitability of the parameter as a practical measure of imperfection sensitivity is examined. Theoretical results are correlated with available data for the experimental buckling loads of stringer stiffened cylinders. The evidence for the suitability of the parameter as a practical measure of imperfection sensitivity is judged to be promising but not conclusive. (Author).

Book Buckling and Postbuckling Studies of Torsion Loaded Thin Wall Cylindrical Shells with Cutouts

Download or read book Buckling and Postbuckling Studies of Torsion Loaded Thin Wall Cylindrical Shells with Cutouts written by John Sigmund Strenkowski and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ENTAL STUDY OF THE PRE-BUCKLING AND POSTBUCKLING BEHAVIOR OF THIN ALUMINUM CYLINDRICAL SHELLS WITH R/h of 100 under a pure applied torque is reported. The investigation includes initially-undamaged and pre-damaged cylindrical shells. The types of predamage include a single circular 1-inch diameter hole, and a single size rectangular slot (3/8-inch wide and 2.10-inch long) with orientations of 0, 45, and 90 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical shell. Postbuckling behavior of these specimens is investigated for large twist angles, for both monotonically-increasing angular deflections and for unloading-reloading behavior. Load-deflection characteristics and buckling patterns distinctive to each type of specimen tested are presented. Finally, comments are offered on idealizing these buckling patterns for possible use in the future development of approximate methods for predicting these types of postbuckling load-deflection behavior. (Author).

Book Buckling and Postbuckling Studies of Moment Loaded Thin Wall Cylindrical Shells with Cutouts

Download or read book Buckling and Postbuckling Studies of Moment Loaded Thin Wall Cylindrical Shells with Cutouts written by Cheng-Hwa Francis Chiang and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study of the prebuckling, incipient buckling, and postbuckling behavior of thin-wall aluminum cylindrical shells with a nominal R/h of 100 and subjected to pure bending is reported. The investigation includes initially-undamaged and cutout-predamaged cylindrical shells. The types of predamage include: (a) a single circular hole (three different diameters were employed) and (b) a single slotted hole of fixed size and aspect ratio but oriented axially (phi = 0 degrees), obliquely (phi = 45 degrees), or circumferentially (phi = 90 degrees). Emphasis is given to studying the load-deflection behavior and the associated buckling patterns in the postbuckling range, for both monotonically-increasing angular deflections of the buckled region and unloading-reloading behavior. Load-deflection characteristics and buckling patterns distinctive to each type of specimen tested are presented for bending rotations extending to about 15-20 degrees. (Author).

Book Buckling Behavior of Uniformly Heated Thin Circular Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Buckling Behavior of Uniformly Heated Thin Circular Cylindrical Shells written by Stanford University. Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of buckling tests on uniformly heated, clamped, thin circular cylindrical shells are presented and discussed. Particular attention is paid to both the actual buckling process and the ensuing postbuckling behavior. Load versus end shortening curves are included and it is remarked that, in the thermal buckling problem, such curves are nonlinear. The possibility of 'snap-through' buckling, which occurs at a value of end shortening greater than that corresponding to the maximum supported load, is experimentally verified. A comparison of the present experimental results with available theory is made. It is observed that the experimental values of the buckling temperature can by substantially greater than the temperatures calculated by linear theory from the experimental buckling loads. (Author).

Book Buckling and Postbuckling of an Axially Compressed Oval Cylindrical Shell

Download or read book Buckling and Postbuckling of an Axially Compressed Oval Cylindrical Shell written by Joseph Kempner and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy expressions and related differential equations for non-circular cylindrical shells, analogous to the corresponding relations presented by Donnell for thin-walled circular cylindrical shells, are summarized. Appropriate energy expressions are then applied to the classical buckling and to the nonlinear postbuckling problems of an axially compressed oval cylinder whose cross section is characterized by a simplified form of an expression proposed by Marguerre. In the case of classical buckling, the results show, for a range of major-to-minor axis ratio of the cross section lying between 1 (the circular cylinder) and 2.06, that the out-of-roundness has a marked effect on the critical load, and that introduction of the maximum radius of curvature into the formula for the classical buckling stress of a circular cylinder leads to good results for thin-walled shells of moderate eccentricity of the cross section. The postbuckling behavior is investigated through the application of the principle of stationary potential energy together with an approximate deflection function. The latter represents a modification of the expression applied earlier by the authors. The new results show that, in addition to the previously observed relative minimum postbuckling load, a relative maximum postbuckling load can exist. Furthermore, for controlled end-displacement loading, the large-deflection load vs end-shortening curve can correspond to stable equilibrium configurations throughout the entire loading range, whereas for dead-weight loading the region of the curve between the maximum and the minimum loads represents unstable configurations.
