Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hevea Brasiliensis, or Para Rubber: Its Botany, Cultivation, Chemistry and Diseases, With Plates and Diagrams In the previous edition, written long before the Ceylon Rubber Exhibition, I pointed out that the industry, as far as growers were concerned, was in its infancy. The present edition has been compiled in consequence of the many advances which have been recently made in methods Of cultivation and tapping, coagulating, and curing Operations. I have, since I retired from the Ceylon Service, had signal Opportunities of studying the rubber industry from many points Of View; the wider knowledge thus gained prompted me to give a more detailed account of essential operations as carried out by rubber collectors in all parts of the world. Book The Cultivation and Preparation of Para Rubber Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cultivation and Preparation of Para Rubber Classic Reprint written by W. H. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cultivation and Preparation of Para Rubber The principal object I have in view in writing this small treatise on the Cultivation and Preparation of Para Rubber, is to endeavour to give to the continually increasing number of persons taking up rubber cultivation such practical advice on the various matters connected with that comparatively new industry as would be likely to assist them in their undertaking. Although the cultivation of Para rubber is at the present time almost limited to a few countries in the Eastern Tropics of the Old World, there is every prospect of its being further extended in those regions, and also of being taken up largely in the Western Tropics. There are in Tropical Africa thousands of square miles of land suitable for the cultivation of the Para rubber tree. Upon a large extent of this land rubber-producing plants were at one time abundant, but now year by year their number is being gradually diminished, as the result of the disastrous methods of tapping employed by the native rubber collectors. The question of replanting these areas with Para rubber trees is well worth the consideration of the administrative authorities, and especially those in our various West African possessions. Book The Devil s Milk

Download or read book The Devil s Milk written by John Tully and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the modern world told through the multiple lives of rubber Capital, as Marx once wrote, comes into the world “dripping from head to foot, from every pore, with blood and dirt.” He might well have been describing the long, grim history of rubber. From the early stages of primitive accumulation to the heights of the industrial revolution and beyond, rubber is one of a handful of commodities that has played a crucial role in shaping the modern world, and yet, as John Tully shows in this remarkable book, laboring people around the globe have every reason to regard it as “the devil’s milk.” All the advancements made possible by rubber—industrial machinery, telegraph technology, medical equipment, countless consumer goods—have occurred against a backdrop of seemingly endless exploitation, conquest, slavery, and war. But Tully is quick to remind us that the vast terrain of rubber production has always been a site of struggle, and that the oppressed who toil closest to “the devil’s milk” in all its forms have never accepted their immiseration without a fight. This book, the product of exhaustive scholarship carried out in many countries and several continents, is destined to become a classic. Tully tells the story of humanity’s long encounter with rubber in a kaleidoscopic narrative that regards little as outside its range without losing sight of the commodity in question. With the skill of a master historian and the elegance of a novelist, he presents what amounts to a history of the modern world told through the multiple lives of rubber.
