Book In Search of the Physical Basis of Life

Download or read book In Search of the Physical Basis of Life written by Gilbert Ling and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is highly probable that the ability to distinguish between living and nonliving objects was already well developed in early prehuman animals. Cognizance of the difference between these two classes of objects, long a part of human knowledge, led naturally to the division of science into two categories: physics and chemistry on the one hand and biology on the other. So deep was this belief in the separateness of physics and biology that, as late as the early nineteenth century, many biologists still believed in vitalism, according to which living phenomena fall outside the confines of the laws of physics. It was not until the middle of the nineteenth century that Carl Ludwig, Hermann von Helmholz, Emil DuBois-Reymond, and Ernst von Briicke inaugurated a physicochem ical approach to physiology in which it was recognized clearly that one set of laws must govern the properties and behavior of all matter, living and nonliving . . The task of a biologist is like trying to solve a gigantic multidimensional crossword fill in the right physical concepts at the right places. The biologist depends on puzzle: to the maturation of the science of physics much as the crossword solver depends on a large and correct vocabulary. The solver of crossword puzzles needs not just a good vocabulary but a special vocabulary. Words like inee and oke are vitally useful to him but are not part of the vocabulary of an English professor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in response to Thomas Huxley's famous essay on the nature of life, Stirling's work explores the complex and controversial concept of protoplasm. Arguing that protoplasm is the essential material basis of all living organisms, this book offers a fascinating glimpse into the cutting-edge science of the mid-19th century. Book On the Physical Basis of Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book On the Physical Basis of Life Classic Reprint written by Thomas Henry Huxley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Physical Basis of Life The following remarkable discourse was originally delivered in Edinburgh, Nov. 18th, 1868, as the first of a series of Sunday evening addresses, upon non-religious topics, instituted by the Rev. J. Cranbrook. It was subsequently published in London as the leading article in the Fortnightly Review, for February, 1869, and attracted so much attention that five editions of that number of the magazine have already been issued. It is now re-printed in this country, in permanent form, for the first time, and will doubtless prove of great interest to American readers. The author is Thomas Henry Huxley, of London, Prof. of Natural History in the Royal School of Mines, and of Comparative Anatomy and Physiology in the Royal College of Surgeons. He is also President of the Geological Society of London. Although comparatively a young man, his numerous and valuable contributions to Natural Science entitle him to be considered one of the first of living Naturalists, especially in the departments of Zoology and Paleontology, to which he has mainly devoted himself. He is undoubtedly the ablest English advocate of Darwin's theory of the Origin of Species, particularly with reference to its application to the human race, which he believes to be nearly related to the higher apes. Book The Major Prose of Thomas Henry Huxley

Download or read book The Major Prose of Thomas Henry Huxley written by Thomas Henry Huxley and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) was one of the intellectual giants of Victorian England. A surgeon by training, he became the principal exponent of Darwinism and popularizer of "scientific naturalism." Huxley was a prolific essayist, and his writings put him at the center of intellectual debate in England during the later half of the nineteenth century. The Major Prose of Thomas Henry Huxley fills a very real and pressing chasm in history of science books, bringing together almost all of Huxley's major nontechnical prose, including Man's Place in Nature and both "Evolution in Ethics" and its "Prolegomena."
