Download or read book On the Pathology and Treatment of Gonorrhea Classic Reprint written by John Laws Milton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Pathology and Treatment of Gonorrhea Whether the attempt 'now made to prove that gonorrhoea may, when admitting of removal, be cured without the use of the so-called specifics, is based on sufficient grounds or not, it would ill become me to say. This much, however, I can vouch for; the doctrines I have ventured to lay down havebeen pretty severely tested. Nothing has been recommended by myself in this work but what has stood the brunt, not merely of experience, for that I rate rather low, but of special observation. My aim was, as far as possible, to separate clearly what might be looked on as established from what was doubtful, and not merely to prove every assertion, but to place it on such a basis that it could rot be disproved; How far I have succeeded I leave to the decision of my readers. For the remedies advised, or the views up held, by other authors, I do not hold myself answerable. I considered my task was to select what seemed most likely to improve treatment, and only hope I have executed it in a satisfactory way. That such a work was needed is proved by its steadily increasing sale among the profession; that the mode of examining the thera peutie action of remedies, adopted in it from the very first, was sound, is shown by so many authors having testified to the accuracy of the results obtained, as also by the British 'medical Association having appointed a committee to carry out the same method, but, with all deference be it said, in a much less exact and complete shape. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Pathology and Treatment of Gonorrhoea and Spermatorrhoea It is not to be expected that the adverse judgment passed upon many remedies, which have been at one time or other so strongly advocated, will prove acceptable to those who recommended them to public favor. But for this there is no help. Experience compels me to say that they have not fulfilled the expectations which the first accounts of them were calculated to raise. Book Gonorrhea in Women Its Pathology Symptomatology Diagnosis and Treatment Together with a Review of the Rare Varieties of the Disease W

Download or read book Gonorrhea in Women Its Pathology Symptomatology Diagnosis and Treatment Together with a Review of the Rare Varieties of the Disease W written by Charles Camblos Norris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gonorrhea in Women: Its Pathology, Symptomatology, Diagnosis, and Treatment; Together With a Review of the Rare Varieties of the Disease Which Occur in Men, Women and Children In this exceedingly comprehensive volume on gonorrhea Dr. Norris has placed before us, in a most interesting and instructive way, the many phases of this subject. The historic narrative, which leads back to the earliest records of the disease, is intensely entertaining, following as it does the curious and bizarre views expressed in ancient literature regarding the affection up to the description of the remarkable experiment performed by Hunter upon himself, in which he endeavored to show that the specific virus of gonorrhea and that of syphilis were interchangeable. As a result of this remarkable but fallacious experiment Hunters theory of the mutual identity of the two infections was accepted by the profession without further question. In spite of the later and well-sustained dissent by Ricord, this view continued to hold sway, and was not entirely dissipated until the discovery, by Neisser, of the specific microorganism of gonorrhea. This discovery put an end to the long-agitated discussion, and for the first time a scientific foundation was established upon which all modern work along this line has been constructed. One learns from the ancient documents, as set down by Dr. Norris, that the ravages of gonorrhea were recognized, and that strenuous efforts were made, by segregation and other restrictive means, to limit its spread. In the chapter on Bacteriology and the Pathogenesis of Gonorrhea, the author has very clearly described the best cultural and staining methods, and traced the destructive effects of the gonococcus upon the pelvic organs and other tissues of the body. This study is elaborately illustrated from gross and microscopic sections made by Dr. Norris from the extensive collection in the pathologic laboratory of the Gynecologic Department of the University of Pennsylvania. The literature has been carefully compiled, and has been so well digested as to furnish an almost encyclopedic review of all the various aspects and history of the Neisserian infection. In the chapter on Sociology the author has considered the relationship of gonorrhea to sterility and abortion, and has shown the havoc that is wrought in the destruction of the eye-sight of new-born infants as the result of maternal infection.
