Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Deluxe Version) Slushie is a strange but charming comic strip about the life and adventures of an Emperor Penguin of the same name, drawn and written by Bo Andre Lundqvist. At the heart of the strip is a lovable cast of characters who waddle their way through a surprisingly colorful world (given that it is Antarctica and all) where the only limit to the possibilities is the imagination of the author. On the Origin of Slushie is the first compilation of strips from the beloved series, covering the first seven years of its zany humor. So, grab a sweater and get ready for balloon sharks, bovine-inspired rock bands, mechanical warriors of democracy, anthropomorphic carbon, and, most of all, penguins. Lots and lots of penguins."

Book Preventing Corporate Corruption

Download or read book Preventing Corporate Corruption written by Stefano Manacorda and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of a two-year international research project conducted for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNDOC) to investigate and provide solutions for reducing bribery and corruption in corporations and institutions. It starts with an empirical case study on the effectiveness of a set of self-regulation rules adopted by multinational companies in the energy sector. Second, it explores the context and factors leading to corruption internationally (and the relationships between domestic criminal law and self-regulation). Third, it examines guidelines for the adoption of compliance programs developed by international institutions, to serve as models for the future. The principle result of the book is a three-pronged Anti-Bribery Corruption Model (so called ABC Model), endorsed by the United Nations, intended as a corruption prevention tool intended to be adopted by private corporations. This work provides a common, research-based standard for anti-bribery compliance programs, with international applications. This work will be of interest to researchers studying Criminology and Criminal Justice, particularly in the areas of organized crime and corruption, as well as related areas like Business Ethics and Comparative International Law.

Book Word Origins

Download or read book Word Origins written by John Ayto and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 983 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The average contemporary English speaker knows 50,000 words. Yet stripped down to its origins, this apparently huge vocabulary is in reality much smaller, derived from Latin, French and the Germanic languages. It is estimated that every year, 800 neologisms are added to the English language: acronyms (nimby), blended words (motel), and those taken from foreign languages (savoir-faire). Laid out in an A-Z format with detailed cross references, and written in a style that is both authoritative and accessible, Word Origins is a valuable historical guide to the English language.

Book On the Mode of Uplift of the Fish and Fossiliferous Moraines of the McMurdo Ice Shelf Antarctica

Download or read book On the Mode of Uplift of the Fish and Fossiliferous Moraines of the McMurdo Ice Shelf Antarctica written by Anthony Jack Gow and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The McMurdo Ice Shelf and associated faunal remains were examined in the vicinity of the easternmost Dailey Island. Stratigraphic, petrographic, and chemical composition studies of cores from 2 holes drilled through the ice shelf show that at these locations the shelf is composed only of fresh water ice. Although cores from the deeper hole possessed glacial textures throughout, much of the ice from this part of the McMurdo Ice Shelf may have been formed from the freezing of a layer of fresh water found sandwiched between the shelf bottom and the underlying sea water. The existence of fresh water under the ice shelf can most probably be attributed to drainage of surface melt water during the ablation season. There was no evidence to indicate that this part of the ice shelf is being nourished by the growth of sea ice onto its lower surface. The fish remains found on the ice surfaces were confined to a narrow zone along the tide crack and are believed to have been left in this vicinity by deep diving seals. The marine invertebrate remains on top of the ice are associated with morainal material and are believed to have been incorporated into the ice at the time of formation of the moraines. (Author).

Book An Analytic Dictionary of the English Etymology

Download or read book An Analytic Dictionary of the English Etymology written by Anatoly Liberman and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work introduces renowned linguistics scholar Anatoly Liberman's comprehensive dictionary and bibliography of the etymology of English words. The English etymological dictionaries published in the past claim to have solved the mysteries of word origins even when those origins have been widely disputed. An Analytic Dictionary of English Etymology "by contrast, discusses all of the existing derivations of English words and proposes the best one. In the inaugural volume, Liberman addresses fifty-five words traditionally dismissed as being of unknown etymology. Some of the entries are among the most commonly used words in English, including man, boy, girl, bird, brain, understand, key, ever, " and yet." Others are slang: mooch, nudge, pimp, filch, gawk, " and skedaddle." Many, such as beacon, oat, hemlock, ivy," and toad," have existed for centuries, whereas some have appeared more recently, for example, slang, kitty-corner, " and Jeep." They are all united by their etymological obscurity. This unique resource book discusses the main problems in the methodology of etymological research and contains indexes of subjects, names, and all of the root words. Each entry is a full-fledged article, shedding light for the first time on the source of some of the most widely disputed word origins in the English language. "Anatoly Liberman is one of the leading scholars in the field of English etymology. Undoubtedly his work will be an indispensable tool for the ongoing revision of the etymological component of the entries in the Oxford English Dictionary."" --Bernhard Diensberg, OED" consultant, French etymologies Anatoly Liberman is professor of Germanic philology at the University of Minnesota. He has published many works, including 16 books, most recently Word Origins . . . and How We Know Them: Etymology for Everyone."
