Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised edition discusses numerical methods for computing eigenvalues and eigenvectors of large sparse matrices. It provides an in-depth view of the numerical methods that are applicable for solving matrix eigenvalue problems that arise in various engineering and scientific applications. Each chapter was updated by shortening or deleting outdated topics, adding topics of more recent interest, and adapting the Notes and References section. Significant changes have been made to Chapters 6 through 8, which describe algorithms and their implementations and now include topics such as the implicit restart techniques, the Jacobi-Davidson method, and automatic multilevel substructuring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of research into large scale eigenvalue problems are presented in this volume. The papers fall into four principal categories: novel algorithms for solving large eigenvalue problems, novel computer architectures, computationally-relevant theoretical analyses, and problems where large scale eigenelement computations have provided new insight.

Book Templates for the Solution of Algebraic Eigenvalue Problems

Download or read book Templates for the Solution of Algebraic Eigenvalue Problems written by Zhaojun Bai and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large-scale problems of engineering and scientific computing often require solutions of eigenvalue and related problems. This book gives a unified overview of theory, algorithms, and practical software for eigenvalue problems. It organizes this large body of material to make it accessible for the first time to the many nonexpert users who need to choose the best state-of-the-art algorithms and software for their problems. Using an informal decision tree, just enough theory is introduced to identify the relevant mathematical structure that determines the best algorithm for each problem.

Book Numerical Linear Algebra and Applications

Download or read book Numerical Linear Algebra and Applications written by Biswa Nath Datta and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full of features and applications, this acclaimed textbook for upper undergraduate level and graduate level students includes all the major topics of computational linear algebra, including solution of a system of linear equations, least-squares solutions of linear systems, computation of eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and singular value problems. Drawing from numerous disciplines of science and engineering, the author covers a variety of motivating applications. When a physical problem is posed, the scientific and engineering significance of the solution is clearly stated. Each chapter contains a summary of the important concepts developed in that chapter, suggestions for further reading, and numerous exercises, both theoretical and MATLAB and MATCOM based. The author also provides a list of key words for quick reference. The MATLAB toolkit available online, 'MATCOM', contains implementations of the major algorithms in the book and will enable students to study different algorithms for the same problem, comparing efficiency, stability, and accuracy.

Book Using Parallel Banded Linear System Solvers in Generalized Eigenvalue Problems

Download or read book Using Parallel Banded Linear System Solvers in Generalized Eigenvalue Problems written by Hong Zhang and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "Subspace iteration is a reliable and cost effective method for solving positive definite banded symmetric generalized eigenproblems, especially in the case of large scale problems. This paper discusses an algorithm that makes use of two parallel banded solvers in subspace iteration. A shift is introduced to decompose the banded linear systems into relatively independent subsystems and to accelerate the iterations. With this shift, an eigenproblem is mapped efficiently into the memories of a multiprocessor and a high speed-up is obtained for parallel implementations. An optimal shift is a shift that balances total computation and communication costs. Under certain conditions, we show how to estimate an optimal shift analytically using the decay rate for the inverse of a banded matrix, and how to improve this estimate. Computational results on iPSC/2 and iPSC/860 multiprocessors are presented."

Book Numerical Algebra Matrix Theory Differential Algebraic Equations and Control Theory

Download or read book Numerical Algebra Matrix Theory Differential Algebraic Equations and Control Theory written by Peter Benner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-09 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume highlights the scientific contributions of Volker Mehrmann, a leading expert in the area of numerical (linear) algebra, matrix theory, differential-algebraic equations and control theory. These mathematical research areas are strongly related and often occur in the same real-world applications. The main areas where such applications emerge are computational engineering and sciences, but increasingly also social sciences and economics. This book also reflects some of Volker Mehrmann's major career stages. Starting out working in the areas of numerical linear algebra (his first full professorship at TU Chemnitz was in "Numerical Algebra," hence the title of the book) and matrix theory, Volker Mehrmann has made significant contributions to these areas ever since. The highlights of these are discussed in Parts I and II of the present book. Often the development of new algorithms in numerical linear algebra is motivated by problems in system and control theory. These and his later major work on differential-algebraic equations, to which he together with Peter Kunkel made many groundbreaking contributions, are the topic of the chapters in Part III. Besides providing a scientific discussion of Volker Mehrmann's work and its impact on the development of several areas of applied mathematics, the individual chapters stand on their own as reference works for selected topics in the fields of numerical (linear) algebra, matrix theory, differential-algebraic equations and control theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse eigenvalue problems arise in a remarkable variety of applications and associated with any inverse eigenvalue problem are two fundamental questions--the theoretical issue of solvability and the practical issue of computability. Both questions are difficult and challenging. In this text, the authors discuss the fundamental questions, some known results, many applications, mathematical properties, a variety of numerical techniques, as well as several open problems. This is the first book in the authoritative Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computation series to cover numerical linear algebra, a broad area of numerical analysis. Authored by two world-renowned researchers, the book is aimed at graduates and researchers in applied mathematics, engineering and computer science and makes an ideal graduate text.
