Thompson at the request of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, and was in preparation at the time of his death in the spring of 1917. Mr. Thompson had for some years contemplated the preparation of an edition of the original text of the treatise On the Sacraments, and had dealt with some of the liturgical problems involved in both treatises in his valuable little book On the Offices of Baptism and Confirmation, in the Cambridge Handbooks of Liturgical Study. To that book the present editor has made constant reference in preparing the Introduction and Notes. Aeterna Press

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sacraments, Vol. 1: A Dogmatic Treatise The justification of the sinner, with which we have dealt in a previous treatise is ordinarily not a purely internal and invisible process or series of acts, but requires the instrumentality of external visible signs instituted by Jesus Christ, which either confer grace - or augment it. Such visible means of grace are called Sacraments. The source and well-spring of all grace under the present dispensation is the Sacrifice of the Cross, from which redemptive power flows into the souls of men through the Sacraments and the Mass. This consideration led St. Thomas to regard the Passion of Our Divine Saviour as the foundation-stone of the dogmatic treatise on the Sacraments. Names. - No other mystery of the Catholic religion has been known by so many different names as the Holy Eucharist, considered both as a Sacrament and as a Sacrifice. These names are so numerous that the Church's entire teach ing on this dogma could be developed from a mere study of them. They are derived from Bibli cal events, from the sacramental species, from the effects produced by the Sacrament, from the Real Presence, and from the sacrificial charac ter of the Mass. Book The Sacraments Explained According to the Teaching and Doctrine of the Catholic Church

Download or read book The Sacraments Explained According to the Teaching and Doctrine of the Catholic Church written by Arthur Devine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sacraments Explained According to the Teaching and Doctrine of the Catholic Church: With an Introductory Treatise on Grace As it was considered useful to give a treatise on Faith as an introduction to 'The Creed Explained, ' and a treatise on Law to 'The Commandments Explained, ' I have written as an introduction to the present volume a treatise on Grace. The first 97 pages of this work are devoted to an explanation of the Catholic doctrine of Grace. In the spiritual life there is no new plan to suggest as to the essential means of conversion and of sanctification. The one essential means is, as we know, the grace of God. The Reformers of the sixteenth century taught numerous errors on the subjects of justification and grace, and the Church of England has continued to the present day in error on these subjects. No one section or school of that body can be said to have correct Catholic knowledge as to the doctrine of justification and grace, and this is true even of the highest of the High Church party, who pretend that nothing separates them from the Church of Rome but the Petrine claims. The whole sum of Christianity may be comprehended in two things, namely, in knowledge and in obedience. The one is conversant about things supernaturally revealed or inspired, the other about duties to be supernaturally performed. Book The Sacraments of the New Testament as Instituted by Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sacraments of the New Testament as Instituted by Christ Classic Reprint written by George D. Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sacraments of the New Testament, as Instituted by Christ In the following treatise on the Sacraments of the New Testament, the author's aim has been to give a discussion of the subject: - First. - Thoroughly Scriptural. - Every passage of Scripture which can properly claim attention in a full and fair examination of the subject is considered, and a correct exposition of it attempted. The Word of God, and that alone, can bind the faith of the Church in this matter, and to the Word of God, and to that alone, is our appeal made. The Sacraments as instituted by Christ, were corrupted at a very early date, (see 1 Cor. xi. 17-34) and hence, what is called "primitive practice," and the authority, even of the Ante-Nicene Fathers, is of little worth in settling questions respecting their form and nature. Second. - Adapted to the present state of the controversies in the Church. - Where controversy is long continued: - and the controversy between Romanists and Protestants respecting the Lord's Supper dates back to the very beginning of "the Reformation"; and that between Baptists and Pedobaptists, respecting the proper mode and subjects of baptism, to a time not much later - it always happens, that new grounds of defence are occupied, and new arguments of assault are introduced from time to time; and hence it comes that the discussion which was thorough and exhaustive a century ago, does not meet the necessities of to-day. In the following treatise, the author has aimed to deal with the several doctrines discussed as they are presented and defended by their leading advocates of to-day. Third. - Popular, i.e., adapted to the comprehension of the average English reader. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
