Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mountain Playmates There are great compensations awaiting those who have spent their youth in a level, inland coun try. If one has reached maturity before he stands for the first time in the presence of the sea or mountains, the impression left is as clean cut as an intaglio crisp and sharp in detail, it makes an imperishable memory. It is a distinct loss to have the edge of sublimity dulled by too great famil iarity, especially by the familiarity that comes from having grown up with an object, so that at no time has one experienced the delicious shock caused by a sudden surprise of beauty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sacred Heart in the Mountains Over the mountain-tops the sun is climbing, with Southern brilliancy; down through the trees he pours, and gleams in golden streaks through my shuttered windows. I rub my sleepy eyes, and see by the clock it is half-past five - high time that I should be up and doing. My first emotion is one of joy, even before I remember what it comes from: as is often the case, the last thought at night is usually the first in the morning then it slowly dawns on my drowsy senses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mountain: Renewed Studies in Impressions and Appearances For the rest these sketches should speak for themselves. They Will tell you that my ih terest is with the beauty of the mountains rather than their science, their history, or their conquest by Alpinists. I have used science herein by way of illustrating the bases of form and color and used history and narrative merely as a setting for the picture. It is the picture - the pictorial in the mountains that I am seeking, and the remainder is only so much pigment, varnish, and gilt frame. All the world loves the mountains - loves them as color patterns on the blue, as marvels of light and shade, as symbols of peace and purity loves them, in other words, as one might a picture. That there is a supreme grandeur about the peaks and a great beauty in the lesser hills every one Will acknowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophet of the Great: Smoky Mountains Her face was grave, but there was a smile in her eyes, which had the lustre and depth of a sapphire, and a lambent glow like the heart of a blue flame. They were fringed by long, black lashes, and her hair was black, also. Her pink calico sun-bonnet, flaring toward the front, showed it lying in moist tendrils on her brow, and cast an unwonted roseate tint upon the clear, healthful pallor of her complexion. She wore a dark blue homespun dress, and, despite her coarse garb and uncouth occupation and the gaunt Old ox, there was something impressive in her simple beauty, her youth, and her elastic vigor. As she drove the ploughshare into the mould she might have seemed the type of a young civilization, so fine a thing in itself, so roughly accoutred. Book The Mountain Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mountain Of the present volume, M. Michelet himself says, that the greater portion of it springs from our own travels, and relates what we ourselves have seen. It does not interfere with great scientific labours. It derives its interest from our friendly rela tions with that lofty Nature, so grand but so indulgent, which reveals itself willingly to those who sincerely love it. The reader will see with what a degree of intimacy we learned to admire the Patriarchs of the Alps. We cherish a grateful sentiment towards those august giants - those sublime mountains in Whose bosom we found ourselves so tenderly sheltered, and which so generously poured out to us their calm, profound, and serene soul. Book In the Mist of the Mountains Classic Reprint

Download or read book In the Mist of the Mountains Classic Reprint written by Ethel Turner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Mist of the Mountains Still you continue to look in front of you as far as may be. And the next moment the veil lifts, clean up over your head perhaps, and you see it rolling away on the wind to one side of you, yards and yards of flying white gossamer, its ragged edges catching in the trees. And now your gaze leaps and lingers, and lingers and leaps for miles in front Of you. You look downward and the ball of the earth has split at your feet and the huge fissure has widened and widened till a limitless valley lies there. You look down hundreds of feet and see like sprouting seedlings the tops of gum trees, - gum trees two hundred feet high. The far Side of the valley shows a rolling mountain chain washed in in tender shades of purple, paling nearer at hand to blue, the tender indescribable mountain blue. Great jagged headlands hang perilously over the deep, and the Silver thread of a distant water fall gleams here and there down the face of the gorges of whose wonderful beauty the tourist has heard and comes thousands of miles to see. A billowy cloud, soft and dazzling as snow, has fallen from the sky or risen with the mist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Rocky Mountain Adventures Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rocky Mountain Adventures Classic Reprint written by Mason Bradford Shelton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rocky Mountain Adventures Gold had been discovered in California in 1849. Men went wild if not crazy over the excitement. Large fortunes were made by men, whether they were worthy of them or not. Of course glowing descriptions of the country, and the great wealth men were accumulating, were published in all the leading papers and magazines, but they failed to tell that for every success there were at least one hundred failures. These auriferous products of Nature were discovered in liberal quantities in 1859 on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains near Denver, Colorado. The old excitement had partly subsided, but the world was set on fire a second time. The war between the States covered the blaze, so to speak, for four yeais, but the embers were there waiting to be uncovered, when the time was ripe. In the early part of 1867 with a few hundred dollars and several of those sparks of Hope still alive and ready for duty, I decided to beard the lion in his den. As it was then too early in the year, the season not being suitable to cross the plains or prospect for gold in the mountains, I accepted for the time a position in a wholesale dry goods store in Nashville, Tenn., to terminate at my own option.
