Book excerpt: This book is a reflective, original, and sometimes speculative essay on the concept of power and the man-god tradition in Mexican colonial history, with some provocative thoughts on how that tradition affected the way the indigenous population reacted to the cultural upheavals of the Spanish Conquest and its aftermath. The basis of the work is the rich documentation that survives from efforts to prosecute cases of idolatry and witchcraft. The author closely examines four such cases - Indian peasants living in central Mexico who proclaimed themselves successors of the gods during various stages of the colonial era (in 1537, 1659, 1665, and 1761). Drawing on the testimony of these man-gods and their followers, the author describes the emergence of these native leaders, discusses their individual qualities, and evaluates their impact and hold on their followers. He also sets out in substance their speeches and depositions, which provide a rare critique of colonial society. Coming from the lower classes, socially and culturally marginal, these man-gods tried to understand and surmount the profound changes that were crushing their society. Their actions were doomed to failure, but they reveal a dynamism and creativity that have been ignored by conventional historians. In a more general way, the book demonstrates through concrete examples how popular cultures constantly change and recreate their own traditions, and how vanquished and dominated societies, in order to construct a new identity, create new cultural forms.

Limited") came into Charleston yesterday, it was an hour late and quite a crowd was waiting to get aboard. Going with me as far as Kenova were D, H, and eight or ten of "the boys." They all carried Winchesters and were bound on a trip to the mountains of Mingo and McDowell, on the Kentucky line, to capture a moonshine still which was reported to be doing a fine business selling to the mines. D wanted me to go along, and offered me a rifle or a shotgun, as I chose. They are big men, all of them, and love a scrap, which means the give and take of death, and have no fear except of ambush. I still carry in my pocket the flat-nosed bullet D took from the rifle of Johnse Hatfield two years ago, when he caught him lying-in-wait behind a rock watching for Doc. Ellis to come forth from his front door. Johnse was afterward hanged in Pikeville for other crimes. Then, a few months later, his brother "Lias," just to get even, picked off Doc. Ellis as he was getting out of a Pullman car. Now "Lias" is said to be looking for D, also, but D says he's as handy with his gun as "Lias" is, if only he can get a fair show. D is captain of this raid and promises to bring me tokens of a successful haul, but I am apprehensive that, one of these days, he or some other of "the boys" will not come back to Charleston.

It provides comparative information on the high-status ruins situated on the fringes of the Valley of Mexico and excavation results from a compound within the city of Teotihuacan. This information is of critical use to archaeologists still excavating at Teotihuacan in projecting compound extent, types of artifacts expected to be discovered, and patterns of artifacts to be found in particular types of rooms. The characteristics of burials is also explored. This book, along with its predecessor, is an important primary resource for Americanists. Staffan Brunius's foreword offers a broad background of Linné's life and work. The introduction by George Cowgill focuses more specifically on the conduct and impact of the archaeological exavations. G. C. Vaillant has stated, "The greatest achievement of Dr. Linné from the viewpoint of the general student is the presentation of a technical field excavation in such terms that anyone can follow his text and see the relationship between the details of position of specimens and the larger problems of history and anthropology." Sigvald Linné was Professor of Ethnography at the University of Stockholm and Director of the Swedish National Museum of Ethnography until 1969. He published several other books, including The Technique of South American Ceramics. Staffan Brunius is Curator of the Americas at the National Museum of Ethnography in Stockholm. George L. Cowgill is Professor of Anthropology at Arizona State University and coeditor of The Collapse of Ancient States and Civilizations.
