This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Mesozoic Rocks, in Some of the Coal Explorations in Kent Except for a few notes on the Palaeozoic rock of doubtful age reached in the Brabourne boring, we have purposely confined our selves to the Mesozoic rocks. The deep-seated Coal Measures, their probable extent and their tectonic relations, have been fully dealt with in numerous papers by Prof. W. Boyd Dawkins, the late R. Etheridge, Mr. W. Whitaker, and othersl. The practical object of the explorations will not, therefore, be directly dis cussed; but as it is mainly upon the thickness and character of the overlying rocks that the success of the colliery enterprises in Kent Will depend, all information regarding these rocks has its practical side. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You can't really know the place where you live until you know the shapes and origins of the land around you. To feel truly at home in the Bay Area, read Doris Sloan's intriguing stories of this region's spectacular, quirky landscapes."—Hal Gilliam, author of Weather of the San Francisco Bay Region "This is a fascinating look at some of the world's most complex and engaging geology. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in an understanding of the beautiful landscape and dynamic geology of the Bay Area."—Mel Erskine, geological consultant "This accessible summary of San Francisco Bay Area geology is particularly timely. We are living in an age where we must deal with our impact on our environment and the impact of the environment on us. Earthquake hazards, and to a lesser extent landslide hazards, are well known, but the public also needs to be aware of other important engineering and environmental impacts and geologic resources. This book will allow Bay Area residents to make more intelligent decisions about the geological issues affecting their lives."—John Wakabayashi, geological consultant

Book Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah

Download or read book Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah written by David D. Gillette and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1999 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 52 papers in this vary in content from summaries or state-of-knowledge treatments, to detailed contributions that describe new species. Although the distinction is subtle, the title (Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah) indicates the science of paleontology in the state of Utah, rather than the even more ambitious intent if it were given the title “Vertebrate Paleontology of Utah” which would promise an encyclopedic treatment of the subject. The science of vertebrate paleontology in Utah is robust and intense. It has grown prodigiously in the past decade, and promises to continue to grow indefinitely. This research benefits everyone in the state, through Utah’s muse ums and educational institutions, which are the direct beneficiaries.

Book A Geology for Engineers

Download or read book A Geology for Engineers written by F.G.H. Blyth and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No engineering structure can be built on the ground or within it without the influence of geology being experienced by the engineer. Yet geology is an ancillary subject to students of engineering and it is therefore essential that their training is supported by a concise, reliable and usable text on geology and its relationship to engineering. In this book all the fundamental aspects of geology are described and explained, but within the limits thought suitable for engineers. It describes the structure of the earth and the operation of its internal processes, together with the geological processes that shape the earth and produce its rocks and soils. It also details the commonly occurring types of rock and soil, and many types of geological structure and geological maps. Care has been taken to focus on the relationship between geology and geomechanics, so emphasis has been placed on the geological processes that bear directly upon the composition, structure and mechanics of soil and rocks, and on the movement of groundwater. The descriptions of geological processes and their products are used as the basis for explaining why it is important to investigate the ground, and to show how the investigations may be conducted at ground level and underground. Specific instruction is provided on the relationship between geology and many common activities undertaken when engineering in rock and soil.
