Book The Rust Fungi of Cereals Grasses and Bamboos

Download or read book The Rust Fungi of Cereals Grasses and Bamboos written by George B. Cummins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the preparation of this descriptive manual of the rust fungi of the grasses of the world the principal goal was to produce a system by which these important pathogens might be recognized on the basis of their morophology, without dependence on the identity of the host plant. This is an Utopian goal and, being Utopian, has doubtless not been attained. But it is better to have tried and partially failed than not to have tried at all. The first attempt to revise the classification on a new basis utilized the rust fungi of the tribe Andropogoneae. A "Group System" was initiated (Uredineana 4:5-89. 1953) based on the uredinial stage. The attempt was satisfactory at the time, but was not adaptable when all grass rust fungi were considered. Consequently, an expanded system was employed when I attempted a summarization of all grass rust fungi. The expanded scheme (Plant Disease Reporter Supplement 237:1-52. 1956) of 9 Groups proved to be a most helpful organizational system and is used here (see explanations, p. Xi) in Puccinia, Uromyces, and Uredo. The system is useful and does aggregate generally similar species, rather than segregating them as in a host-based arrangement. The characters used, i.e. presence or absence of paraphyses, arrangement of germ pores, and echinulate or verrucose spore surface, are subject to minimal intergradations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers will perhaps be surprised to find a volume about fungi within a handbook of vegetation science. Although fungi traditionally feature in textbooks on botany, at least since Whittaker (1969), they have mostly been categorised as an independent kingdom of organisms or, in contrast to the animal and plant kingdom, as probionta together with algae and protozoa. More relevant for ecology than the systematic separation of fungi from plants is the different lifestyle of fungi which, in contrast to most plants, live as parasites, saprophytes or in symbiosis. Theoretical factors aside, there are also practical methodological considerations which favour the distinction between fungal and plant communities, as has been shown for example by Dörfelt (1974). Despite their special position the coenology of fungi has been dealt with in the handbook of vegetation science. It would be wrong to conclude that we underestimate the important differences between fungal and plant communities. The reasons for including the former are that mycocoenology developed from phytocoenology, the similarity of the methods and concepts still employed today and the close correlation between fungi and plants in biocoenoses.

Book The British Rust Fungi Uredinales

Download or read book The British Rust Fungi Uredinales written by W. B. Grove and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Rust Fungi (Uredinales): Their Biology and Classification It is now twenty-four years since the publication of Plowrignt's "Monograph of the Uredineae and Ustilagineae," and during that long period very great progress has been made in elucidating the biology of the former group. To Plowright will ever belong the honour of being one of the pioneers in this important work, especially in that branch which is the most fascinating and has the greatest number of secrets to unfold - viz. Heter cism. But since his time numerous investigators have followed in his footsteps, while others have taken new ground and largely increased our knowledge, so that the picture which he presented of the biology and classification of the Rusts has now become, in certain directions, very incomplete and misleading. The descriptions in the present volume are naturally based upon those in the "Monographia Uredinearum" of the brothers Sydow, so far as that monumental work has been published. Those of all the species of which British specimens could be procured have been carefully revised, and there is hardly one of them that has not been added to or amended. Fischer's "Uredineen der Schweiz," and McAlpine's "Rusts of Australia" have also been found extremely useful. No attempt has been made to give a full synonymy, but merely so much as was required to show the origin and authority of the name used, and to include all the references to the various species contained in the works consulted, especially those of Cooke and Plowright.
