Book On the Luck of an Irish Sailor

Download or read book On the Luck of an Irish Sailor written by Michael Mirabella and published by . This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young Irish sailor cast adrift in the sea. A mermaid princess and Irish luck save him from drowning. This adventurous tale owes its inspiration to stories Mike Mirabella heard as a little boy. His sizeable Italian clan swapped stories during family dinners at the kitchen table. "My grandpa and uncles would tell tales of fishing the waters off the coast of California and up through the inland passages of Alaska. I recall Grandpa Angelo telling of the scary time when he was a cabin boy of 12 and was captured by pirates while working on the tall ships. And then there was the never-ending argument between my Grandpa and Uncle Cam: what was the strange creature they caught off the coast of Alaska? A mermaid or a merman? "I was (and still am), that wee lad in our story, sitting wide-eyed, half-believing, yet never tiring of hearing those wonder-filled stories told by those salty, old jacks."Using the rhyming style of a pirate in an Irish pub, our sailor spins his yarn about seeing the slap of a mermaid's tail during a mighty storm. "On the Luck of an Irish Sailor" is a beautiful tale of adventure on the high seas. In a story that's been passed down for generations, author Mike Mirabella takes us on a magical experience deep beneath the ocean. Could it happen? Did it happen? Folklore - that's the feeling sparked by the illustrations by illustrator Amy O'Hanlon. She uses hues of blues, grays, and browns to depict the fierce storm accurately. On other pages, O'Hanlon uses beige and brown tones to create the illusion of an older picture book-like a classic story that's been around for years.Enjoy the bonus song sheets and sing along with this mostly true story of adventure, redemption, and "The Luck of an Irish Sailor."

Book Sailors of the Cloud Ships

Download or read book Sailors of the Cloud Ships written by David Fooks and published by BookLocker.com, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Age of Sail wrought the greatest change to the world in the history of mankind; possibly until the Age of Space Exploration. From 1450 to 1850 the Western world experienced explosive and violent change, most of it brought about by the great sailing ships of the era, and driven by the personal ambition for power and riches in a handful of men and women, who in many cases didn’t have a clue what they were getting into. Today, this exciting era receives just superficial coverage; names, dates and what was accomplished. But, behind these were real people, and digging into their lives can bring up startling facts: Columbus spent much of his life as a pirate. Magellan wasn’t the first to circumvent the globe. Horatio Nelson, England’s greatest naval hero, suffered from violent seasickness. America’s most famous lightkeeper, recognized for saving as many as 32 drowning men over 52 years, was a woman. Women served as crew in the British Navy, and fought alongside their husbands; a two-year-old boy served as a midshipman, and babies were born on Nelson's flagship during both the Battles of Trafalgar and the Nile. The British monarchy financed and provided oversight for the largest slave transport company in history. History can be humorous, surprising, and even shocking, and, it is anything but dull.

They say that sea shanties-authentic sea shanties-are no more. They died with the sailing ship, and will never again be heard in their original form. Or... will they? Richard Runciman Terry was born in 1865 to a family that had been seafarers as far back as the family history could be traced. As a child, he grew up hearing shanties sung to him by his uncles and grand-uncles-all tall-ship sailors. As a boy, he was constantly found among ships, learning more shanties, songs, and sea lore. As an adult he became one of the premier musicians of his day, as a noted organist, choir director and musicologist; but he never forgot the songs that originally inspired his love of music. Just after the turn of the century, he decided to capture as much of that dying musical heritage as he could. He sought out his relatives, and their friends, and the friends of their friends-coaxing and cajoling them into singing their repertoire of shanties so he could write them down. What he wanted was to hear the way shanties were sung, by the men who had actually worked the tall ships, and for whom the shanty had been an integral part of their everyday lives. He wanted to record the songs exactly as those men sung them, so they would not be lost to future generations. In 1921, he published his archive in the first of two books, the second one coming in 1926. Both long out of print books, with his explanatory notes and annotations, are presented here. 65 Authentic Shanties from the Age of Sail
