Book excerpt: It is a cherished fictional device to build a story around the discovery of a previously unpublished text. The stratagem is used by Henry James in The Aspern Papers. A.S. Byatt's Booker-Prize winning novel, Possession: A Romance, is also built this way. The Lee Shore is not an invention, but an actual flesh-and-blood manuscript. I only know about the book, because its author, Loyd "Pete" Collins, was a colleague and a close friend of my father, John Cheever. In 1935 Collins published a well-thought-of novel titled Call Me Ishmael. He then stopped publishing books, but he didn't stop writing. He worked for 30 years on The Lee Shore, and was fiddling with the manuscript almost until he died in 1966. Loyd's widow, Lib Logan Collins, kept the pages in a bank vault for 35 years. Her desire to see the book out before her own death prompted two of Loyd's nephews to produce a typescript. Here it is then, a first-class story, but also an artifact. The Lee Shore hails from the time before the invention of memoir, but reads with the force of living history. The romance begins in upstate New York when everybody smoked, and the streams were thronged with gigantic trout. --Benjamin Cheever May, 2004

Book excerpt: He explains when and where in Melville's wanderings throughout America, Europe, and the Near East he saw these works, then describes how Melville made use of the life and work of these artists in his own fiction and poetry. The collection includes new essays on Moby Dick and J.M.W. Turner; Melville's fascination with Dutch genre painting; his appropriation of work by Cole and Vanderlyn for his magazine fiction; his use of early representations of the plague in Israel Potter; the relationship between the satirical cartoons of Daumier and the figures of The Confidence-Man; Timoleon's many artistic subjects; and the power of classical icons to shape the moral and aesthetic conflicts in Billy Budd. Also found here are theoretical essays on Melville and the picturesque; the modernism of Melville's aesthetic vision; his "anti-architectural" theory of literature; and his extensive reading in art history and art theory, from the classical to his own period.

Then he was told, Standing right in Urquhart's way like that Urquhart doesn't want to be stared at by all the silly little kids in the lower-fourth. But Urquhart was, as a matter of fact, probably used to it. So that was Urquhart. Peter Margerison hugged secretly his two pieces of knowledge so secret they were, and so enormous, that he swelled visibly with them; there seemed some danger that they might even burst him. That great man was Urquhart. Urquhart was that great man. Put so, the two pieces of knowledge may seem to have a certain similarity there was in effect a delicate discrimination between them. If not wholly distinct one from the other, they were anyhow two separate aspects of the same startling and rather magnificent fact. Book Theory and Applications of Ocean Surface Waves

Download or read book Theory and Applications of Ocean Surface Waves written by C Mei Chiang and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2005-07-26 with total page 1136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an expanded version of The Applied Dynamics of Ocean Surface Waves. It presents theoretical topics on ocean wave dynamics, including basic principles and applications in coastal and offshore engineering as well as coastal oceanography. Advanced analytical and numerical techniques are applied, such as singular perturbations. In this expanded version, three chapters on recent developments have been added. The first is on multiple scattering by periodic or random bathymetry. The second is on Zakharov's theory of nonlinear wave fields with broad spectra. The third is an extensive discussion of powerful numerical techniques for highly nonlinear waves. Other new topics include infragravity waves, upstream solitons, Venice storm gates, etc. In addition, there are many new exercises. Theory and Applications of Ocean Surface Waves will be invaluable for graduate students and researchers in coastal and ocean engineering, geophysical fluid dynamicists interested in water waves, and theoretical scientists and applied mathematicians wishing to develop new techniques for challenging problems or to apply techniques existing elsewhere. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 1240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book set is a revised version of the 2005 edition of Theory and Applications of Ocean Surface Waves. It presents theoretical topics on ocean wave dynamics, including basic principles and applications in coastal and offshore engineering as well as coastal oceanography. Advanced analytical and numerical techniques are demonstrated. In this revised version, five chapters on recent developments in linear and nonlinear aspects have been added. The third is on Long Waves in Shallow Water and the fourth is an update on Broad-Banded Nonlinear Surface Waves in the Open Sea to include new findings in this topic. The fifth is an expanded chapter on Numerical Simulation of Nonlinear Wave Dynamics to include predictions of nonlinear spectral evolution and rogue wave occurrence and dynamics using large-scale phase-resolved simulations. This revised version also includes recent developments in precorrected-FFT accelerated O(N log N) low- and high-order boundary element methods for the computation of fully nonlinear wave-wave and wave-body interactions.Theory and Applications of Ocean Surface Waves (2016) will be invaluable for graduate students and researchers in coastal and ocean engineering, geophysical fluid dynamicists interested in water waves, and theoretical scientists and applied mathematicians wishing to develop new techniques for challenging problems or to apply techniques existing elsewhere.

Book excerpt: This is the third novel in the Lieutenant Alexander Clay series Newly promoted to Post Captain, Alexander Clay returns home from the Caribbean to recover from wounds sustained at the Battle of San Felipe. However, he is soon called upon by the Admiralty to take command of the frigate HMS Titan and join the blockade of the French coast. But the HMS Titan will be no easy command with its troubled crew that had launched a successful mutiny against its previous sadistic captain. Once aboard, Clay realizes he must confront the dangers of a fractious crew, rife with corrupt officers and disgruntled mutineers, if he is to have a united force capable of navigating the treacherous reefs of Brittany's notorious lee shore and successfully combating the French determined to break out of the blockade. Philip K Allan manages to move the reader effortlessly between the quarter deck officers and the lower deck men to paint a very convincing picture of life on a ship that is not only battling the elements and a determined enemy on the French coast but within the bounds of his own ship. Even the loyalty of old hands who came with him to this ship is being testing in this very exciting sea yarn. James Boschert: Author of the Talon Series
