Book Horse Racing in France

Download or read book Horse Racing in France written by Professor Emeritus of Renaissance History Robert Black and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse-Racing in France: A History Circumstances rather than natural aptitude, taste, inclination, or deliberate design have made me for more than twenty years a close student of horse-racing, both English and French. Into those circumstances there is no occasion to enter, and I have not the slightest intention of being gratuitously tedious. Suffice it to say that my first experience of horse-racing carries me back more than forty years to a day of which I have still a vivid remembrance, when I saw an animal belonging to the famous Colonel (afterwards General) Peel run at a provincial race meeting; and that I believe I can still from mere memory give that animal's name (although it achieved no great celebrity) - 'I-am-not-aware.' Since then I have witnessed a great many of the most memorable races ever run, and have had at least a bowing acquaintance with some of the most notable race horses, English, French, Austro-Hungarian, German, American, and others, that ever came to the post. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Race Horse: How to Buy, Train, and Run Him As to the knowledge requisite, the apprenticeship which qualifies an uneducated lad to undertake, at a later period, the charge of a racing stable, would, of course, qualify one superior to him in this respect for the same task. This is an ordeal to which few gentle men will submit. In place thereof they can learn the art of training from observation, from experience, and from oral or written instruction. The last I have in the ensuing pages endeavoured, and, I h0pe, with some suc cess, to impart, success which I believe will attend the efforts of those who deem this little work worthy of their perusal and attention, and who intelligently inter pret the precepts and practice therein enjoined. These have been derived from actual experience of training in New Zealand, the West Indies, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America, and from observa tion of the methods employed by the best and the worst trainers, and the success or failure attending their efforts, as well as from the Opinion of those whose reputation is deservedly high, and therefore worthy of consideration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Horses: Including the Law of Innkeepers, Veterinary Surgeons, &C It will be observed that Part III. 01 the original work, dealing with Racing, Wagers, and Gaming, has been omitted from the present edition. The reason 101° this omission is that the subject had so greatly increased in bulk, and incidentally in scope, that it appeared to over weight a book the primary object of which is to give an exposition of the law as applied to Horses. In the opinion of the editor, the law relating to Gaming and Wagering would, in its present state of development, be more appropriately dealt with in a separate treatise.
