Book Classical Kinetic Theory of Weakly Turbulent Nonlinear Plasma Processes

Download or read book Classical Kinetic Theory of Weakly Turbulent Nonlinear Plasma Processes written by Peter H. Yoon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinetic theory of weakly turbulent nonlinear processes in plasma helped form the foundation of modern plasma physics. This book provides a systematic overview of the kinetic theory of weak plasma turbulence from a modern perspective. It covers the fundamentals of weak turbulence theory, including the foundational concepts and the mathematical and technical details. Some key obstacles to space plasma applications are also covered, including the origin of non-thermal charged particle population, and radio burst phenomena from the sun. Treating both collective and discrete particle effects, the book provides a valuable reference for researchers looking to familiarize themselves with plasma weak turbulence theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HE ninth Scottish Universities' Summer School in Physics, sponsored T jointly by the Scottish Universities and NATO was held at Newbattle Abbey from 28th July to 16th August 1968. This was the first Scottish Summer School to be devoted to plasma physics, the exact title for the School being the Physics of Hot Plasmas. Forty-three students were accepted, fourteen of these being resident in the United Kingdom. In addition there were eleven lecturers and seven other participants. The choice of lecturers, particularly in experimental plasma physics, was limited to some extent by the fact that an international conference on con trolled fusion was held at Novosibirsk during the first week in August. Not withstanding this, it was possible to arrange a programme of lectures reasonably well balanced between theoretical and experimental plasma physics. The topics chosen included kinetic theory, waves and oscillations, instabilities, turbulence, collisionless shocks, computational methods, laser scattering and laser generated plasmas, plasma production and containment. Several semi nars on special topics were given by invited speakers and by students.

Book Plasma Scattering of Electromagnetic Radiation

Download or read book Plasma Scattering of Electromagnetic Radiation written by John Sheffield and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma Scattering of Electromagnetic Radiation covers the theory and experimental application of plasma scattering. The book discusses the basic properties of a plasma and of the interaction of radiation with a plasma; the relationship between the scattered power spectrum and the fluctuations in plasma density; and the incoherent scattering of low-temperature plasma. The text also describes the constraints and problems that arise in the application of scattering as a diagnostic technique; the characteristic performance of various dispersion elements, image dissectors, and detectors; and the general scattered spectrum for an unmagnetized, low-temperature, quasi-equilibrium plasma. The application of the general scattered spectrum for a magnetized plasma; the scattering from a high-temperature plasma; and the scattering from unstable plasmas are also encompassed. Plasma physicists and people involved in the study of electromagnetic radiation will find the book invaluable.

Book Kinetic Theory of Plasma Waves

Download or read book Kinetic Theory of Plasma Waves written by Marco Brambilla and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with the propagation and absorption of high frequency waves in plasmas. The text collects in a structured and self-contained way the basic knowledge on the broad and varied behavior of plasma waves, adopting the microscopic kinetic description of the plasma as unifying principle. The internal coherence of the theory is explicitly stressed, and interesting physical phenomena peculiar to plasmas are discussed in detail, including collisionless damping of waves, the development of stochasticity in the interactions of charged particles with electromagnetic waves, and nonlinear interactions between waves. The most common and useful approximations used in solving practical problems are derived as special cases from the more general kinetic approach, thereby clarifying their meaning and domain of applicability. This exposition should be useful to plasma physicists both as an introduction and a reference to this field of research.

Book Marginal Stability of Ion Acoustic Waves in a Weakly Collisional Two Temperature Plasma Without a Current

Download or read book Marginal Stability of Ion Acoustic Waves in a Weakly Collisional Two Temperature Plasma Without a Current written by Bamandas Basu and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents two important results for a weakly collisional, current-free, two-temperature electron-ion plasma: (1) that e-i collisions have an undamping effect on ion acoustic waves, and (2) that, for appropriate values of the plasma parameters, ion-acoustic waves become marginally stable. The results are based on the closed form solution for the dielectric function for the linearized Balescu-Lenard-Poisson kinetic equations. The weakly collisional ordering is necessary to obtain an iterative solution for the collisional dielectric function, imposes two independent restrictions on the parameters that characterize the plasma. The linearized Balescu-Lenard-Poisson equations are solved in the weakly collisional limit to show that ion-acoustic waves in a current-free plasma, which are Landau-damped in the absence of collisions, can become marginally stable due to the undamping effect of electron-ion (e-i) collisions. For sq rt.(T sub e0/T sub i0) “ (5/16) sq rt.(m sub i/m sub e), the e-i collisional undamping effect dominates the i-i, e-e, and i-e collisional effects, and marginal stability occurs when the collisional undamping rate balances the electron and ion Landau damping rates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The industrial and military applications of atomic energy have stimulated much mathematical research in neutron transport theory. The possibility of controlled thermonuclear processes has similarly focussed attention upon plasmas, sometimes called the "fourth state of matter". Independently, many classical aspects of kinetic theory and radiative transfer theory have been studied both because of their basic mathematical interest and of their physical applications to areas such as upper-atmosphere meteorology - introduction.
