Book excerpt: Objective: To determine if differences in arena surface are associated with differences in distal limb kinematics in the landing phase of a jump in equine show jumping athletes. Sample: 50 trials from eight show jumping horses collected across four days at two different arenas, a dirt surface and a synthetic surface, were studied. Procedures: Horses completed a minimum of four trials on one surface one day, and then again on the alternate surface the next day. High-speed cameras (500 fps) captured movement of kinematic markers on the distal portions of fore and hind limbs during take-off and landing as horses jumped over a 1 m high oxer. Mechanical properties of the surfaces were measured using a track-testing device (TTD) before and after each horse’s trials. The effects of surface and horse lead, accounting for horse and horse-surface interactions, on distal joint angles and hoof orientation were assessed using a mixed model analysis of variance with statistical significance set at P
