Book An Historical Syntax of the English Language

Download or read book An Historical Syntax of the English Language written by Museo Di Roma and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-05-08 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederik Theodor Visser's An Historical Syntax of the English Language, published in four massive volumes between 1963 and 1973, is certainly one of the cornerstones of research in English linguistics. Visser's achievements can hardly be overestimated. Before the advent of modern corpus linguistics, he compiled a remarkable wealth of detailed philological data from all periods of English and combined this with current grammatical analyses of his time. This has made this publications an indispensable resource for anyone investigating the history of English syntax. This reproduction of Visser's volumes is more than welcome, and timely, as the volumes have been out of print for quite some time and were sometimes a little bit difficult to navigate. Having a searchable and easy-to- use online version, although maybe not perfect, available now means a revival for scholarship that celebrates its fiftieth birthday without losing any of its relevance.

Book The Substance of Language Volume I The Domain of Syntax

Download or read book The Substance of Language Volume I The Domain of Syntax written by John Mathieson Anderson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Domain of Syntax explores the consequences for syntax of assuming that language is grounded in cognition and perception. He considers whether this permits a lexicalist approach to syntax that would allow it to dispense not only with structural mutations but with universal grammar itself.

Book Constituent Order in Functional Grammar

Download or read book Constituent Order in Functional Grammar written by John H. Connolly and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-02-06 with total page 216 pages. Book Understatements and Hedges in English

Download or read book Understatements and Hedges in English written by Axel Hübler and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this monograph is a comprehensive analysis of understatements and other forms of non-direct speech (hedges) in modern English. It is based on a multi-level approach, including philosophical, cultural, and socio-psychological arguments. The main part consists of an investigation of the linguistic restrictions for understatements and hedges to be formed by means of the following grammatical categories: negation of predicates, gradation of predicates, modalization of affirmative sentences by means of parenthetical verbs, modal adverbs, modal verbs, and questions.

Book Inversion in Present day English

Download or read book Inversion in Present day English written by Hans H. Hartvigson and published by University Press of Southern Denmark. This book was released on 1974 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the preface: This study of subject-verb inversion is mainly corpus-based. The corpus comprises both fiction and non-fiction. It has not been "emptied", but we have treated all the patterns of inversion (and relevant patterns of straight order) we have found in it. Although we have made copious use of exemplification, the examples given are only a small fraction of the total number collected. We have made use of a corpus in preference to introspection because it gives a better guarantee of exhaustiveness: time and again the corpus has forced us to accommodate patterns in our system which introspection is not likely to have captured. This does not mean that we totally reject introspection, which we have used in cases where there were gaps in our corpus. Also, we have drawn on earlier treatments of inversion. Of these, special mention should be made of Bengt Jacobsson's impressive monograph. References to our primary corpus take the shape of capital letters followed by page number, e. g. CPSA 14 (a list of the abbreviations used is found on pp. 87-89). Bibliographical references and references to examples taken from the literature on inversion are given as the name of the author followed by page number, e. g. Jacobsson p. 5 (the bibliography is found on pp 90-92). Examples without any reference after them are constructed.

Book Adverbs and Comparatives

Download or read book Adverbs and Comparatives written by Conrad Sabourin and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1977-01-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are indications that interest in the study of adverbs has been growing steadily in recent years, largely due to the so-called Chomskyan revolution in linguistics which put much emphasis on the study of syntax, but probably also because of the position these adverbs and other particles take within a syntactic string has proved to be much more difficult to determine than had previously been thought. Still another reason for the increase of interest in this topic may be found in the recent trend in linguistics which focusses on communicative competence and actual language use in daily discourse. Although this bibliography has no claim to exhaustiveness, it should nonetheless be useful to researchers working on adverbs and comparatives. The titles selected relate in one way or another to the problems the linguist faces with respect to the adverb.

Book Evidentials and Relevance

Download or read book Evidentials and Relevance written by Elly Ifantidou and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-12-31 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses Sperber and Wilson’s Relevance Theory to show how evidential expressions can be analysed in a unified semantic/pragmatic framework. The first part surveys general linguistic work on evidentials, presents speech-act theory and examines Grice’s theory of meaning and communication with emphasis on three main issues: for linguistically encoded evidentials, are they truth-conditional or non-truth-conditional, and do they contribute to explicit or implicit communication? For pragmatically inferred evidentials, is there a pragmatic framework in which they can be adequately accounted for? The second part examines those assumptions of Relevance theory that bear on the study of evidentials, offers an account of pragmatically inferred evidentials and introduces three distinctions relevant to the issues discussed in this book: between explicit and implicit communication, truth-conditional and non-truth-conditional meaning, and conceptual and procedural meaning. These distinctions are applied to a variety of linguistically encoded evidentials, including sentence adverbials, parenthetical constructions and hearsay particles. This book offers convincing evidence that not all evidentials behave similarly with respect to the above distinctions and offers an explanation for why this is so.

Book Structures

Download or read book Structures written by John M. Anderson and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-04-04 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This grammar of English embraces major lexical, phonological, syntactic structures and interfaces. It is based on the substantive assumption: that the categories and structures at all levels represent mental substance, conceptual and/or perceptual. The adequacy of this assumption in expressing linguistic generalizations is tested. The lexicon is seen as central to the grammar; it contains signs with conceptual, or content, poles, minimally words, and perceptual, and expression, poles, segments. Both words and segments are differentiated by substance-based features. They determine the erection of syntactic and phonological structures at the interfaces from lexicon. The valencies of words, the identification of their semantically determined complements and modifiers, control the erection of syntactic structures in the form of dependency relations. However, the features of different segment types determines their placement in the syllable, or as prosodies. Despite this discrepancy, dependency and linearization are two of the analogical properties displayed by lexical, syntactic and phonological structure. Analogies among parts of the grammar are another consequence of substantiveness, as is the presence of figurativeness and iconicity.
