Book excerpt: World renowned leaders in the field provide an accessible introduction to the use of Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets (GSPNs) for the performance analysis of diverse distributed systems. Divided into two parts, it begins with a summary of the major results in GSPN theory. The second section is devoted entirely to application examples which demonstrate how GSPN methodology can be used in different arenas. A simple version of the software tool used to analyse GSPN models is included with the book and a concise manual for its use is presented in the later chapters.

Download or read book Computer Networks and Systems Queueing Theory and Performance Evaluation written by Thomas G. Robertazzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical performance evaluation has assumed an increasing amount of importance as we seek to design more and more sophisticated communi cation and information processing systems. The ability to predict a pro posed system's performance without actually having to construct it is an extremely cost effective design tool. This book is meant to be a first year graduate level introduction to the field of statistical performance evaluation. As such, it covers queueing theory (chapters 1-4) and stochastic Petri networks (chapter 5). There is a short appendix at the end of the book which reviews basic probability theory. At Stony Brook, this material would be covered in the second half of a two course sequence (the first half is a computer networks course using a text such as Schwartz's Telecommunications Networks). Students seem to be encouraged to pursue the analytical material of this book if they first have some idea of the potential applications. I am grateful to B.L. Bodnar, J. Blake, J.S. Emer, M. Garrett, W. Hagen, Y.C. Jenq, M. Karol, J.F. Kurose, S.-Q. Li, A.C. Liu, J. McKenna, H.T. Mouftah and W.G. Nichols, I.Y. Wang, the IEEE and Digital Equip ment Corporation for allowing previously published material to appear in this book.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the proceedings of the 11th International Conference International Conference on Verification and Evaluation of Computer and Communication Systems ( VECoS 2017 ), held at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, in August 2017. The 13 full papers, together with 3 abstracts in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 35 submissions. The aim of the VECoS conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners in the areas of verification, control, performance and dependability evalu-ation in order to discuss state-of-the-art and challenges in modern computer and communication systems in which functional and extra-functional properties are strongly interrelated. Thus, the main motivation for VECoS is to encourage the cross-fertilization between various formal verification and evaluation approaches, methods and techniques, and especially those developed for concurrent and dis-tributed hardware/software systems.

Download or read book Resilience Assessment and Evaluation of Computing Systems written by Katinka Wolter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resilience of computing systems includes their dependability as well as their fault tolerance and security. It defines the ability of a computing system to perform properly in the presence of various kinds of disturbances and to recover from any service degradation. These properties are immensely important in a world where many aspects of our daily life depend on the correct, reliable and secure operation of often large-scale distributed computing systems. Wolter and her co-editors grouped the 20 chapters from leading researchers into seven parts: an introduction and motivating examples, modeling techniques, model-driven prediction, measurement and metrics, testing techniques, case studies, and conclusions. The core is formed by 12 technical papers, which are framed by motivating real-world examples and case studies, thus illustrating the necessity and the application of the presented methods. While the technical chapters are independent of each other and can be read in any order, the reader will benefit more from the case studies if he or she reads them together with the related techniques. The papers combine topics like modeling, benchmarking, testing, performance evaluation, and dependability, and aim at academic and industrial researchers in these areas as well as graduate students and lecturers in related fields. In this volume, they will find a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in a field of continuously growing practical importance.
