Book Homeomorphisms of 3 Manifolds with Compressible Boundary

Download or read book Homeomorphisms of 3 Manifolds with Compressible Boundary written by Darryl McCullough and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1986 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors study the mapping class groups of orientable [italic]P2-irreducible 3-manifolds with compressible boundary, and extend the results proved by K. Johannson for the boundary incompressible case. The authors show that the mapping class group is finitely-generated and has a geometrically defined subgroup of finite index. The main tool used in the proof of the results is to reduce the theorems to analogous statements about incompressible neighborhoods of compressible boundary components, and, using the fact that they have a very simple structure (being products-with-handles), to apply geometric techniques. Appropriate extensions of the results of the nonorientable [italic]P2-irreducible 3-manifolds are also given.

Download or read book Erdos Space and Homeomorphism Groups of Manifolds written by Jan Jakobus Dijkstra and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let M be either a topological manifold, a Hilbert cube manifold, or a Menger manifold and let D be an arbitrary countable dense subset of M. Consider the topological group H(M,D) which consists of all autohomeomorphisms of M that map D onto itself equipped with the compact-open topology. We present a complete solution to the topological classification problem for H(M,D) as follows. If M is a one-dimensional topological manifold, then we proved in an earlier paper that H(M,D) is homeomorphic to Qω, the countable power of the space of rational numbers. In all other cases we find in this paper that H(M,D) is homeomorphic to the famed Erdős space E E, which consists of the vectors in Hilbert space l2 with rational coordinates. We obtain the second result by developing topological characterizations of Erdős space.

Book Dynamics of Topologically Generic Homeomorphisms

Download or read book Dynamics of Topologically Generic Homeomorphisms written by Ethan Akin and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this work is to describe the dynamics of generic homeomorphisms of certain compact metric spaces $X$. Here ``generic'' is used in the topological sense -- a property of homeomorphisms on $X$ is generic if the set of homeomorphisms with the property contains a residual subset (in the sense of Baire category) of the space of all homeomorphisms on $X$. The spaces $X$ we consider are those with enough local homogeneity to allow certain localized perturbations of homeomorphisms; for example, any compact manifold is such a space. We show that the dynamics of a generic homeomorphism is quite complicated, with a number of distinct dynamical behaviors coexisting (some resemble subshifts of finite type, others, which we call `generalized adding machines', appear strictly periodic when viewed to any finite precision, but are not actually periodic). Such a homeomorphism has infinitely many, intricately nested attractors and repellors, and uncountably many distinct dynamically-connected components of the chain recurrent set. We single out several types of these ``chain components'', and show that each type occurs densely (in an appropriate sense) in the chain recurrent set. We also identify one type that occurs generically in the chain recurrent set. We also show that, at least for $X$ a manifold, the chain recurrent set of a generic homeomorphism is a Cantor set, so its complement is open and dense. Somewhat surprisingly, there is a residual subset of $X$ consisting of points whose limit sets are chain components of a type other than the type of chain components that are residual in the space of all chain components. In fact, for each generic homeomorphism on $X$ there is a residual subset of points of $X$ satisfying a stability condition stronger than Lyapunov stability.

Book Groups of Circle Diffeomorphisms

Download or read book Groups of Circle Diffeomorphisms written by Andrés Navas and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years scholars from a variety of branches of mathematics have made several significant developments in the theory of group actions. Groups of Circle Diffeomorphisms systematically explores group actions on the simplest closed manifold, the circle. As the group of circle diffeomorphisms is an important subject in modern mathematics, this book will be of interest to those doing research in group theory, dynamical systems, low dimensional geometry and topology, and foliation theory. The book is mostly self-contained and also includes numerous complementary exercises, making it an excellent textbook for undergraduate and graduate students.

Download or read book Groups and Manifolds written by Pietro Giuseppe Fré and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groups and Manifolds is an introductory, yet a complete self-contained course on mathematics of symmetry: group theory and differential geometry of symmetric spaces, with a variety of examples for physicists, touching briefly also on super-symmetric field theories. The core of the course is focused on the construction of simple Lie algebras, emphasizing the double interpretation of the ADE classification as applied to finite rotation groups and to simply laced simple Lie algebras. Unique features of this book are the full-fledged treatment of the exceptional Lie algebras and a rich collection of MATHEMATICA Notebooks implementing various group theoretical constructions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hauptvermutung is the conjecture that any two triangulations of a poly hedron are combinatorially equivalent. The conjecture was formulated at the turn of the century, and until its resolution was a central problem of topology. Initially, it was verified for low-dimensional polyhedra, and it might have been expected that furt her development of high-dimensional topology would lead to a verification in all dimensions. However, in 1961 Milnor constructed high-dimensional polyhedra with combinatorially inequivalent triangulations, disproving the Hauptvermutung in general. These polyhedra were not manifolds, leaving open the Hauptvermu tung for manifolds. The development of surgery theory led to the disproof of the high-dimensional manifold Hauptvermutung in the late 1960's. Unfortunately, the published record of the manifold Hauptvermutung has been incomplete, as was forcefully pointed out by Novikov in his lecture at the Browder 60th birthday conference held at Princeton in March 1994. This volume brings together the original 1967 papers of Casson and Sulli van, and the 1968/1972 'Princeton notes on the Hauptvermutung' of Armstrong, Rourke and Cooke, making this work physically accessible. These papers include several other results which have become part of the folklore but of which proofs have never been published. My own contribution is intended to serve as an intro duction to the Hauptvermutung, and also to give an account of some more recent developments in the area. In preparing the original papers for publication, only minimal changes of punctuation etc.

Book Structure and Regularity of Group Actions on One Manifolds

Download or read book Structure and Regularity of Group Actions on One Manifolds written by Sang-hyun Kim and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-19 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the theory of optimal and critical regularities of groups of diffeomorphisms, from the classical work of Denjoy and Herman, up through recent advances. Beginning with an investigation of regularity phenomena for single diffeomorphisms, the book goes on to describes a circle of ideas surrounding Filipkiewicz's Theorem, which recovers the smooth structure of a manifold from its full diffeomorphism group. Topics covered include the simplicity of homeomorphism groups, differentiability of continuous Lie group actions, smooth conjugation of diffeomorphism groups, and the reconstruction of spaces from group actions. Various classical and modern tools are developed for controlling the dynamics of general finitely generated group actions on one-dimensional manifolds, subject to regularity bounds, including material on Thompson's group F, nilpotent groups, right-angled Artin groups, chain groups, finitely generated groups with prescribed critical regularities, and applications to foliation theory and the study of mapping class groups. The book will be of interest to researchers in geometric group theory.

Book Variational Problems in Topology

Download or read book Variational Problems in Topology written by A.T. Fomenko and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the modern variational problems of topology arise in different but overlapping fields of scientific study: mechanics, physics and mathematics. In this work, Professor Fomenko offers a concise and clear explanation of some of these problems (both solved and unsolved), using current methods of analytical topology. His book falls into three interrelated sections. The first gives an elementary introduction to some of the most important concepts of topology used in modern physics and mechanics: homology and cohomology, and fibration. The second investigates the significant role of Morse theory in modern aspects of the topology of smooth manifolds, particularly those of three and four dimensions. The third discusses minimal surfaces and harmonic mappings, and presents a number of classic physical experiments that lie at the foundations of modern understanding of multidimensional variational calculus. The author's skilful exposition of these topics and his own graphic illustrations give an unusual motivation to the theory expounded, and his work is recommended reading for specialists and non-specialists alike, involved in the fields of physics and mathematics at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
