Book On the Functions of the Sympathetic System of Nerves as a Physiological Basis for a Rational System of Therapeutics Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Functions of the Sympathetic System of Nerves, as a Physiological Basis for a Rational System of Therapeutics A Great portion of the following contribution towards a rational system of Therapeutics, was published in the Lancet during the months of October and November, 1871. Since that time I have received so many complimentary communications from my fellow-workmen, at home and abroad, that I venture to print it in a separate form, with the hope that it may assist, be it in never so small a degree, to establish therapeutics on a scientific and rational basis. To render it perfectly intelligible, I have been obliged to supply some prefatory observations on the structure and functions of the sympathetic system of nerves, for on such anatomical and physiological facts my theory is founded. The anatomical part of the subject I have carefully pursued myself, and have seldom failed to trace three kinds of nerve-fibres to every sympathetic ganglion that I have examined. The physiological experiments I have culled from sources which, I trust, will be accepted as perfectly trustworthy. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology and Pathology of the Sympathetic System of Nerves According to experiments just published by brown-sequard, to which we shall again refer - the accuracy of which, how ever, we did not find confirmed to the full extent - we may assume that the sympathetic pupillary branches probably terminate on the surface of the brain. The connection between the centrum cilio-spinale inferius and the sympathetic takes place, as Budge and Claude Ber nard have shown, through the communicating branches of the anterior roots of the Spinal nerves. Division of these acts on the pupil in the same way as section of the cervical Sympathetic itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Structure, Functions and Diseases, of the Human Sympathetic Nerve The subject of which I have undertaken to treat, is in the universal Opinion of physiologists one of the most difficult kind, in consequence of the amplitude of the field it embraces, and the arduous investigation, Which it necessarily involves. Its due consideration not only requires anatomical research, but also well directed physiological experiments, and correct patho logical observations. As respects the former, I am convinced, that a general anatomical description or disquisition in relation to the nervous filaments of the organs, would not suffice; but that the investigation should be so extended as to embrace those constituting the internal structure of the nerves, and especially of the ganglia. Download or read book A Treatise on Emotional Disorders of the Sympathetic System of Nerves Classic Reprint written by William Murray and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Emotional Disorders of the Sympathetic System of Nerves A conviction that much of the mental suffering around us is due to disordered conditions of those parts of the body which are closely related to the ganglionic system of nerves, has emboldened me to write a Treatise containing many familiar observations on a subject which has been freely discussed and fully acknowledged by both the public and the Medical Profession. The truth is, that we are all familiar with the disorders which accompany disturbed conditions of the mind, but the mechanism by which this disturbance is brought about is too slightly apprehended, and too often only disguised by a name which explains nothing of the nature of the disease. Seeing that it is this class of disorders which supplies the charlatan with fit patients to work upon, and that their gloomy fears and alarm give him ample scope for the most exaggerated statements, and for the use of treatment which too often only protracts suffering, it is hoped that a full exposition of their ailments will protect these sufferers from imposition, and direct them to a rational source of relief. Book The Sympathetic Nervous Sytem in Disease Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sympathetic Nervous Sytem in Disease Classic Reprint written by Walter Langdon-Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sympathetic Nervous Sytem in Disease This book is based upon the Croonian Lectures delivered before the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1918. The kindly interest displayed in different quarters in those lectures emboldens me to hope that in this expanded and rearranged form they may prove of service. I have not attempted to give a detailed account of the anatomy of the autonomic or vegetative nervous system. Several excellent accounts are already in existence, but the mass of detail necessarily involved tends to give the general practitioner an exaggerated idea of its complexity. I have aimed rather to emphasize the main plan of the autonomic nervous system. This is simple, and its comprehension aids in the elucidation of many clinical problems. Nor have I attempted to describe in detail the reaction of the autonomic system to disease. Rather, I have chosen to illustrate its relations to a few large groups of disease - such as affections of the endocrine glands, of the digestive and circulatory systems, and glycosuria. The close interaction of the endocrine glands with the sympathetic nervous system on the one hand, and with the reproductive organs on the other, is a fact of paramount importance in the understanding of the emotional response of the sympathetic nervous system, and of the influence of emotion on structure. Download or read book Essays on the Physiology of the Nervous System written by Benjamin Haskell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Physiology of the Nervous System: With an Appendix on Hydrophobia To be serious, - ia the face of the authority of these eminent men, who hold by the ear, the one the philosophical, the other the physiological world, I believe that it can be established, that while facts and details have accumulated, they alone constitute all the progress that has been made; that not a step has been ta ken in advance, in the general doctrines of the science, since the time of Sir Charles Bell; that even his supposed discovery was, instead ofa step in advance, a step aside that, by placing what was, in reality, an attribute of mind, in a nerve, as a vis insita, and recognizing but a part of a truth as a whole, he has given a tangental impulse to the course of investigation, which has kept it off the track ever since. By endowing the anterior columns of the spinal marrow with a motor power, and the posterior columns with a sensitive power, he sanctioned and gave the chief impetus to subsequent inquiries into the reflex and automatic powers of the brain, ganglia and spinal cord, and the vital endowments of the nerves generally. If the mind or spiritual principle, as a real potential essence, active in the body, is lost sight of in these inquiries, it has been owing, in a great, measure, to the influence of his authority.
