Integral forms for the aerodynamic response to arbitrary motions are derived that are free of dependence on a linearity assumption. Simplifications of the integral forms lead to practicable nonlinear generalizations of the linear superposition and the stability derivative formulations. Applied to arbitrary nonplanar motions, the generalization yields a form for the aerodynamic response that can be compounded of the contributions from a limited number of well-defined characteristic motions, in principle reproducible in the wind tunnel. Further generalizations that would enable the consideration of random fluctuations and multivalued aerodynamic responses are indicated.

The explanation firstly covers in detail the build up and characterization of an analytic model for aircraft in flight. The proposed derivation process allows the reader to obtain an in-depth knowledge of the principles and assumptions employed in the obtainment of the equations describing the dynamic response of an aircraft, in parallel yielding suggestions on how to easily obtain models for other flying machines. Secondly, the model representing aircraft dynamics is populated, employing as much as possible additional simple models, linking basic aerodynamic and geometrical characteristics of an aircraft to the corresponding re- presentation in terms of coefficients. Finally, the dynamic performance of a typical aircraft is analyzed, making use of the notions on the dynamic behavior and on the typical values and balance of aircraft-specific coefficients. An introduction to the conditioning of free dynamics through the design of a stability augmentation system is included as well. This book aims to support engineers as well as engineering students at the graduate level, of- fering a concise yet in-depth description of the dynamic behavior of a flying aircraft, trying to keep a rigorous approach to a greater extent than what is usual in the field. This should hopefully foster the comprehension of the key features in the model derivation process, and consequently the range of validity and applicability of the corresponding formulation. This focus on analytic modeling provides the reader with a key-asset when dealing with engineering problems, for example flight simulation, model identification and flight control design. Therefore, the present books attempts to mark a first relevant step in consolidating the notions required to face more specialized topics in aeronautical engineering.

Book excerpt: A free-flight rocket-propelled-model investigation was conducted at Mach numbers of 1.2 to 1.9 to determine the longitudinal and lateral aero-dynamic characteristics of a low-drag aircraft configuration. The model consisted of an aspect-ratio -1.86 arrow wing with 67.5 deg. leading-edge sweep and NACA 65A004 airfoil section and a triangular vertical tail with 60 deg. sweep and NACA 65A003 section in combination with a body of fineness ratio 20. Aerodynamic data in pitch, yaw, and roll were obtained from transient motions induced by small pulse rockets firing at intervals in the pitch and yaw directions. From the results of this brief aerodynamic investigation, it is observed that very slender body shapes can provide increased volumetric capacity with little or no increase in zero-lift drag and that body fineness ratios of the order of 20 should be considered in the design of long-range supersonic aircraft. The zero-lift drag and the drag-due-to-lift parameter of the test configuration varied linearly with Mach number. The maximum lift-drag ratio was 7.0 at a Mach number of 1.25 and decreased slightly to a value of 6.6 at a Mach number of 1.81. The optimum lift coefficient, normal-force-curve slope, lateral-force-curve slope, static stability in pitch and yaw, time to damp to one-half amplitude in pitch and yaw, the sum of the rotary damping derivatives in pitch and also in yaw, and the static rolling derivatives all decreased with an increase in Mach number. Values of certain rolling derivatives were obtained by application of the least-squares method to the differential equation of rolling motion. A comparison of the experimental and calculated total rolling-moment-coefficient variation during transient oscillations of the model indicated good agreement when the damping-in-roll contribution was included with the static rolling-moment terms.

Book excerpt: The loss of airplanes and occupants attributable to departures from controlled flight and ensuing spins has been a problem since the earliest days of aviation. These losses have plagued both the military and general aviation communities. The phenomena responsible for such losses take on added significance because, in the past ten years, high angle-of-attack capability in the post-stall region has been shown to significantly enhance the air combat maneuvering effectiveness of fighter airplanes and, therefore, this is not a region to be avoided, but rather exploited, if possible. Fortunately, the aerodynamic characteristics that produce departures and spins have been identified within the past few years through rotary balance tests, which identify an airplane's aerodynamic characteristics in a steady rotational flow environment. It was demonstrated in the Phase I that the high angle-of-attack aerodynamic characteristics are very configuration dependent and that forebody geometry can have a significant influence on these characteristics. In the extreme case, an aircraft's undesirable aerodynamics can be completely attributable to the forebody. In this instance, autorotative yawing and rolling moments, as well as increasing nose-up pitching moments with increasing rotation rate, are realized.
