Book On the Food of Fishes Classic Reprint

Download or read book On the Food of Fishes Classic Reprint written by F. Day and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Food of Fishes Having ascertained what minute forms or other descrip tions of life are employed for the nourishment of the fish, the inquiry branches off into what it is that governs and controls migration of these forms, as currents, soils, tempe rature, atmospheric vicissitudes, or some more minute food upon which they themselves subsist What are their enemies and their friends, and the conditions which favour the pre sence or absence of either class? Fishes may for convenience' sake be divided into preda cious, omnivorous, and herbivorous species, which necessitate an organisation suitable for each. Some are rapid swimmers in order to overtake prey, or escape from their foes others, which obtain their food by means of stratagem, are con structed for a slower mode of progression. But, for two reasons, I must omit the consideration of form first, because such are familiar to my hearers, and have represen tatives among the collections shown in this Exhibition and secondly, because such would unduly lengthen my paper. The various descriptions of teeth in fishes are more or less demonstrative of the great difference which must exist as to the food they consume some being prehensile, in order to assist in capturing and retaining their prey; others are more rounded for the purpose of crushing the shells upon which they mainly subsist. In carp the teeth are restricted to the throat, but the variations are too numerous to enter upon in this place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Histories of New Food Fishes: I, the Canadian Plaice We present herewith the first of what, it is hoped, will prove to be a long and important series of bulletins dealing with our food-fishes. There has been a steadily increasing need for a simple and accurate presentation of the facts that have a bearing upon each one of the various problems presented by our fisheries. The many scientific reports which represent great advances in our knowledge, of necessity contain too many technical details for the ordinary reader, are usually too limited in scope to show the proper relation of the new facts to questions of economic importance, and for these reasons do not fill this need. The intention is to present in simple form to those directly interested in the fisheries the principal facts which they should know in order to make the most of the fishery resources we possess, and these bulletins should prove of use not only for present need but also for future reference. For every one of the ten fish or shellfish that make up more than four/fifths of New England's catch there are seven species little known or utilized, many of which could pro vide tasty and nutritious foods. Turning to these under/utilized species will conserve food resources by lifting the burden of over' exploitation from such fishes as cod and haddock and will augment dwindling supplies of protein foods. Download or read book Zoology and Food Fishes Classic Reprint written by George Bond Howes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-03 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoology and Food Fishes Running along the side of the body is a streak, called by Zoologists the lateral line it is a highly modified structure of the nature of an organ of sensation, and in all probability plays a more important part in the economy of the animal than is at present imagined. Coming now to the head, the large eyes are clearly visible, and midway between these and the tip of the snout there is seen on either side an aperture, which upon close inspection is found to be divided into two by an oblique fold of skin; this is the external nostril and leads into the nasal chamber. There are no true eyelids present, but the skin is produced into a couple of transparent folds, which lie in front of and behind the eye respectively. The only remaining parts in the living animal to be noted within the scope of these pages, are those concerning its respiration. The fish, in common with all living things, plant or' animal, must have air, and as this is held in solution in the water, much as we should hold water in a sponge, the fish gets it by swallowing and squeezing, so to speak, the surrounding medium. Book American Fishes

Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Fishes: A Popular Treatise Upon the Game and Food Fishes of North America, With Especial Reference to Habits and Methods of Capture The work was the summary of the observations and reports Of a large corps of experts in ichthyology as well as fisheries and economics, originally employed by the Census Bureau. It contained a fund of information that could not be found in any other work accessible to the general public, and it still holds that place. Nevertheless, in the lapse of time, many changes had been made in the nomenclature of the species, not a few Species had been added, and several important groups of fishes that had been neglected required attention. The data in the work related to two independent subjects: one, the life history or habits of the Species; the other, the statistics of the fisheries. The former has not changed, and what was true fifteen years ago is still true the latter is constantly changing, but the relative values of the differ ent fisheries have not greatly varied. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Propagation and Distribution of Food Fishes, Fiscal Year 1926 The bureau continues to make annual collections of bass and other warm-water fishes from overflowed lands bordering the Mississippi River. These are distributed principally in waters in the States of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois, only a very small number being sent to more remote points. During the year the station at La Crosse, Wis, made preparations for taking up the production of fish in the territory included in the upper Mississippi wild life and fish refuge. Boats and other movable equipment required for the work were obtained, but as the Government had not purchased any land under the provisions of the act creating this refuge no expenditures could be made for improvements to natural ponds. As soon as the property has been acquired the bureau will take steps to utilize the most suitable natural reservoirs for the breeding of fish. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fishes and Their Ways of Life Many keen fishermen have a particular devotion to that form of the art which is practised from a boat, and among their number I certainly include myself. I have Often practised their art in the past, and I practise it still. At any fit and proper time I am prepared to accompany a friend to river, lake, or sea, especially the sea. And so I find delights unknown to the Shore fisherman. I am brought closer to creatures which must be watched for if they are to be caught, and I have a greater Share in their existence. Fishing is no longer a sedate and tranquil form of recreation, no longer a mere stroll along a river bank, or an excuse for a nap; it becomes something more in the nature of hunting, of the chase. It has attractions and dangers all its own. But I do not always confine myself to that common type of fishing which is concerned with catching fish and nothing more. I am after something more than this, and I use special gear. As a naturalist I fish because I seek to garner all the living creatures that dwell in the waters so that I may know them all and learn all about them. The world of waters does not consist only of the fish we use for food. Together with these live other creatures having a place and usefulness of their own. And they are all worth knowing. So.
