According to theoretical arguments as well as experimental evidence, the electron density distribution well above the F2 peak corresponds to a diffusive equilibrium distribution. It is shown that accurate electron density measurements in this altitude region allow the determination of associated atmospheric parameters such as scale height and temperature, as well as the nature and concentration of the light ions, since within this altitude region a transition occurs from the predominant heavy ion (0+) to the light ions (H+ and/or He+). Book excerpt: A new method is suggested for the evaluation of the electron density profile in the outer ionosphere above the F2 layer maximum. It is proposed that the satellite will carry a sweep-frequency transmitter, for frequencies above the maximum plasma frequency of the F2 layer. An analytical method is suggested by which the electron density profile above maximum F2 layer could be found from the time delay records at the ground station and the electron density profile below the maximum F2 layer. In the analysis it is assumed that corrections due to satellite orbit have been made, and that the static geomagnetic field is homogeneous in the region. (Author).
