Book An Introduction to Jacob Boehme

Download or read book An Introduction to Jacob Boehme written by Ariel Hessayon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together for the first time some of the world’s leading authorities on the German mystic Jacob Boehme, to illuminate his thought and its reception over four centuries for the benefit of students and advanced scholars alike. Boehme’s theosophical works have influenced Western culture in profound ways since their dissemination in the early 17th Century, and these interdisciplinary essays trace the social and cultural networks as well as the intellectual pathways involved in Boehme’s enduring impact. The chapters range from situating Boehme in the 16th Century Radical Reformation, to discussions of his significance in modern theology. They explore the major contexts for Boehme’s reception including the Pietist movement, Russian religious thought and Western esotericism, as well as focusing more closely on important readers: the religious radicals of the English Civil Wars and the later English Behmenists; literary figures such as Goethe and Blake, and great philosophers of the modern age, among them Schelling and Hegel. Together, the chapters illustrate the depth and variety of Boehme’s influence and a concluding chapter addresses directly an underlying theme of the volume – asking why Boehme matters today, and how readers in the present might be enriched by a fresh engagement with his apparently opaque and complex writings.

Book excerpt: Should we tell children that Jesus might have died for their sins… or that He did die for their sins? Is the biblical salvation all of grace… or all of irresistible grace? Such questions over the biblical doctrines of salvation have intrigued and confounded the minds of Christians for centuries. Engaging and methodical, Chosen or Not? exposes the most practical implications of this debate from a layman’s perspective, making it accessible for the average Christian. Doug Sayers explains the most essential terms and aspects of the debate, including predestination, reprobation, original sin, propitiation, saving faith, and assurance. Sayers shows how the Calvinistic doctrines of unconditional election and irresistible grace confuse and undermine the simple gospel of repentance and faith in Christ. He clearly exposes the fingerprints of religious man on the Reformed doctrine of reprobation, and affirms that God truly desires the salvation of every single person. “This book is a great help to any believer in Christ that is seeking to rightly divide the Word of God. It has been a very helpful reference when questions over election have come up in my life.” – J. Beller

Download or read book The Election of Grace written by Stephen N. Williams and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few issues in Christian theology have sparked as much controversy over the centuries as the question of election. In this book -- the inaugural volume of the Kantzer Lectures in Revealed Theology series -- Stephen Williams offers a rich and nuanced account of the doctrine of election, arguing that we should diminish the role of “system” in Christian theology. After expounding the Bible’s teaching on election, Williams turns to questions of theological method and substance. He maintains that the subject of predestination must be considered in a wider biblical context than it often is and that we cannot expect to understand election within a comprehensive systematic framework. What matters is the relation of particular truths to the particulars of life, he says, not the systematic relation of truths to each other. Williams draws on and applies the insights of remarkable nineteenth-century Anglican leader Charles Simeon throughout his study, concluding the book with a cogent discussion of Karl Barth on election.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most influential voices in contemporary theology delivers “a deeply original, meticulously written” new approach to the way we think about God (Jack Miles, author of God: A Biography). In this long-awaited work, Ray L. Hart offers a radical speculative theology that profoundly challenges classical understandings of the divine. God Being Nothing contests the conclusions of numerous orthodoxies through a probing question: How can thinking of God reach closure when the subjects of creation are themselves unfinished, when God’s self-revelation in history is ongoing, and when the active manifestation of God is still occurring? A renowned theologist and author of the landmark text Unfinished Man and the Imagination, Ray L. Hart now asks us to imagine God perpetually in process: an unfinished God being self-created from nothingness. Breaking away from the traditional focus on divine persons, Hart reimagines the Trinity in terms of theogony, cosmogony, and anthropogony in order to reveal an ever-emerging Godhead who encompasses all of temporal creation and, within it, human existence. In Hart’s stunning vision, God’s continual generation from nothing manifests the full actualization of freedom: the freedom to create ex nihilo.

Book The Doctrine of Election

Download or read book The Doctrine of Election written by Arthur W. Pink and published by . This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Election is a foundational doctrine. In the past, many of the ablest teachers were accustomed to commence their systematic theology with a presentation of the attributes of God, and then a contemplation of His eternal decrees; and it is our studied conviction, after perusing the writings of many of our moderns, that the method followed by their predecessors cannot be improved upon. God existed before man, and His eternal purpose long antedated His works in time. "Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world" (Acts 15:18). The divine councils went before creation. As a builder draws his plans before he begins to build, so the great Architect predestinated everything before a single creature was called into existence. Nor has God kept this a secret locked in His own bosom; it has pleased Him to make known in His Word the everlasting counsels of His grace, His design in the same, and the grand end He has in view." Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar known for his staunchly Calvinist and Puritan-like teachings. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society (an occult gnostic group popular in England during that time), and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death, ' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

Book The Case for Election The Original Doctrine of Predestination Presented by the Apostles

Download or read book The Case for Election The Original Doctrine of Predestination Presented by the Apostles written by Marc A. Carr and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how the Christian actually became a Christian. The 'process' is Marc's focus. How does God take the Chosen from the womb to salvation then into His eternal bosom? The classic position of Election and Predestination is made plain; forcing the reader to address the alternative, Man's free-will choice to be 'saved' or not. Can these two positions be reconciled? No, not really. The Lord assured Moses: I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion, Exodus 33:19. Moses was to experience a limited 'theophany, ' what the Greek Orthodox call a 'theosis, ' the physical presence of God, Himself, equivalent to - 'My goodness.' It is God's very 'Goodness' the New Testament saint knows to be the indwelt Holy Spirit, the very Spirit of Christ Jesus, Himself, God Himself. Paul cites the Exodus passage in Romans to demonstrate to the body of Christ that God by His sovereignty elected each believer to be His own, that we did not elect ourselves to be God's. And one Saint asked, "Why write about such things that have been covered for hundreds of years?" True. But more recently much about God's sovereignty has been covered over. Christian modernity has adapted as the author once did to a new Evangelicalism. Whereby, some first truths have been buried so deep that when they are unearthed they appear to be a foreign theology to the present generation of Evangelical believers. Marc affords the saint the information necessary to actually understand how he or she actually got saved! Marc presently lives in Orlando Florida where he pastors Blessed Fellowship Orlando, an outreach ministry of Orlando Prayer and Worship Center, Senior Pastor Roy Futch.
