Book Building Up Aspect

Download or read book Building Up Aspect written by Maria Stambolieva and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the problems of the nature of the category of aspect, its formal expression and its relation to Action modes, to the Aorist/Imperfect and Perfect/Non-Perfect distinctions. The discussion is largely based on data from Bulgarian - a Slavonic language where aspect as a grammatical category systematically coexists not only with verbal prefixation, but also with temporal boundedness, correlation and, in the nominal sphere, definiteness. Cross-language parallels with English and French data and the mapping of Bulgarian structures to notions drawn from the «western» tradition of aspectual study result in the outline of a framework for an integrated study of the expression of aspectuality in languages belonging to different language groups. Refuting existing views of aspect as a «compensatory» phenomenon for nominal definiteness, the book presents arguments in favour of a systematic relation between verbal prefixation and NP quantification in Slavonic languages and of a compositional, syntactic dimension of aspectual analysis.

Book Intensive Bulgarian

Download or read book Intensive Bulgarian written by Ronelle Alexander and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive textbook teaching English-speakers to read, write, and speak contemporary Bulgarian. The text is designed to be adaptable for students of varying skill levels and can be taught at a gradual or intensive pace. It is also a much-needed reference grammar of Bulgarian, incorporating the latest research and theories on Bulgarian grammar in accessible layman’s language. Volume 2 contains Lessons 16-30 and introduces more complex points of grammar and syntax than Volume 1. It also includes a cumulative Bulgarian-English glossary covering both volumes. Like many popular language textbooks, the dialogues in Intensive Bulgarian form a continuing dramatic narrative that gradually introduces students to both language and culture. Throughout the text, Bulgarian constructions and phrases are compared with English ones to clarify grammar and idioms. Lessons include: o dialogues and sample sentences o exercises and translation sentences o basic and supplemental grammar sections o reading selections o a glossary for the lesson o cultural notes. Together, Volumes 1 and 2 of Intensive Bulgarian provide all the materials necessary for teachers and students to learn lively, modern colloquial Bulgarian, to become familiar with Bulgarian cultural life, and to thoroughly understand Bulgarian grammar. Slavic scholars will also find in Volume 2 both a thorough presentation of the Bulgarian verb system, as traditionally conceived, and a new analysis of this system.

Book Advances in Greek Generative Syntax

Download or read book Advances in Greek Generative Syntax written by Melita Stavrou and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of original research focuses on various lesser studied aspects of Greek syntax. The articles combine a sound empirical coverage within current developments of generative theory and cover a wide spectrum of areas. The syntax of sentential structure is dealt with by two articles, one is an extensive analysis of the distribution of goal and beneficiary dative DPs in Greek (and cross-linguistically) and the other addresses the relation agree in small clauses (and between adjectives and nouns). Two articles study the acquisition of the left periphery and of eventivity and one focuses on the historical evolution of participles in Greek, out of which gerunds emerged. The syntax and semantics of wh-clauses in DP positions and of the non-volitional verb ?elo are the focus of two articles situated in the syntax–semantics interface. The DP domain is approached by two theoretical articles, one on a Greek possessive adjective and another on determiner heads. The final contribution studies the acquisition of the Greek definite article.

Book Verb Activator for 212 Bulgarian Verbs

Download or read book Verb Activator for 212 Bulgarian Verbs written by Albena Simeonova and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-05-22 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE ACTIVATOR The Verb Activator of 212 Bulgarian Verbs is the first practical guide to Bulgarian verb forms presented in well organized and easy to understand tables and accompanied with a short overview of Bulgarian grammar. Albena Simeonova and Antonia Getova have created a learnerfriendly reference tool which Bulgarian language learners can use to study conjugation systematically, or browse through whenever you need to check a particular verb form. Whether taking their first steps in the language, or mastering the intricacies of the Bulgarian verb system, they can use the Activator as their road-map to success. WHO IS THE ACTIVATOR DESIGNED FOR This book summarizes authors' practical experience in teaching Bulgarian to foreigners, especially regarding the Bulgarian verb system. This is a practical guide to complex verb forms for English-speaking foreigners interested in mastering the Bulgarian language. A wide range of learners at different levels can benefit from this book: the beginners can look up verb conjugations in the present, for example, while the more advanced learners can check more complex structures, such as conditional and future in the past. Authors hope that their fellow teachers of Bulgarian as a foreign language will also find this book useful as they tried to respond to a need - one that they themselves have felt numerous times - of a practical verb reference guide. The Activator is the first book of this type of conjugated Bulgarian verbs. HOW IS THE ACTIVATOR ORGANIZED The Activator begins with a short theoretical part, where authors provide a one-page model of conju-gated verbs. Then follows an Overview of Bulgarian verb system, wherein authors have purposefully avoided technical jargon. They also offer a table of Approximate English equivalents to verb forms in Bulgarian. The main part of the Activator is an alphabetical presentation of 212 verbs, conjugated in 7 tenses and 3 moods. Each verb is presented on a separate page. Authors have also provided a Bulgarian-English dictionary of 55 cognate verbs - these are verbs that have the same base and meaning as their English counterparts. Then users will find an Index of 106 more verbs, formed out of verbs presented in the Activator, using various prefixes. Each verb is followed by a reference to a page where you can find a conju-gated verb serving as a model. In the Activator users can also find an English-Bulgarian Dictionary of all conjugated verbs, which will help them to check the meaning and the forms of the verb they are looking for.
