Book Beyond Consensus

Download or read book Beyond Consensus written by Richard D. Margerum and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of how to move from consensus to implementation using collaborative approaches to natural resource management, urban planning, and environmental policy. Collaborative approaches are increasingly common across a range of governance and policy areas. Single-issue, single-organization solutions often prove ineffective for complex, contentious, and diffuse problems. Collaborative efforts allow cross-jurisdictional governance and policy, involving groups that may operate on different decision-making levels. In Beyond Consensus, Richard Margerum examines the full range of collaborative enterprises in natural resource management, urban planning, and environmental policy. He explains the pros and cons of collaborative approaches, develops methods to test their effectiveness, and identifies ways to improve their implementation and results. Drawing on extensive case studies of collaborations in the United States and Australia, Margerum shows that collaboration is not just about developing a strategy but also about creating and sustaining arrangements that can support collaborative implementation. Margerum outlines a typology of collaborative efforts and a typology of networks to support implementation. He uses these typologies to explain the factors that are likely to make collaborations successful and examines the implications for participants. The rich case studies in Beyond Consensus—which range from watershed management to transportation planning, and include both successes and failures—offer lessons in collaboration that make the book ideal for classroom use. It is also designed to help practitioners evaluate and improve collaborative efforts at any phase. The book's theoretical framework provides scholars with a means to assess the effectiveness of collaborations and explain their ability to achieve results.

Book Perspectives on Ecosystem Management for the Great Lakes

Download or read book Perspectives on Ecosystem Management for the Great Lakes written by Lynton K. Caldwell and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1988-07-08 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1978 Canada and the United States concluded an agreement for the protection and enhancement of water quality in the Great Lakes based on the ecosystem approach to management. Since ratification of this agreement, little progress has been made in practical application of this concept to basin-wide management for the Great Lakes. At the same time public concern for the quality of the Great Lakes and their future has risen dramatically. As a result, the need has arisen for a practical, authoritative explanation of the ecosystem concept. This volume, written by highly qualified authorities, addresses these important ecological, political, and economic issues in a systematic and informative manner. In this study, the ecosystem concept and its objectives are defined. The institutional structure that has evolved for governance of the Great Lakes, the need for a more effective governance structure, and prospects for rehabilitation of the Great Lakes Waters are crucial issues considered. The management question is the single most important policy question with respect to the Great Lakes and this is the only study available that brings together all pertinent information and provides steps for new and constructive management of the Great Lakes.

Book excerpt: This edited volume while focusing on participatory governance in the Great Lakes basin of North America also gives a comparative perspective of the African Great Lakes. The book describes the actions taken at degraded locations along the Great Lakes in North America through Remedial Action Plans (RAP) and other mechanisms, with an aim to highlight the successes and failures encountered in ecosystembased regenerative approaches. The book documents these experiences including the lead taken by industry in improving environmental quality of the Great Lakes. The book concludes with lessons learnt about revitalizing the ecosystem integrity of the lakes, which can be replicated in other watersheds of the world.

Book Development of a Great Lakes St Lawrence Ecosystem Model Framework

Download or read book Development of a Great Lakes St Lawrence Ecosystem Model Framework written by Nicholas C. Sonntag and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenge facing the Great Lakes research community is to develop a conceptual framework that includes all components of the ecosystem but which can still be understood. The Council of Great Lakes Research Managers concluded that a single model would not meet both criteria; instead, submodels are required to build the necessary foundation for a conceptual framework. To make the model understandable and for all pieces to fit, it must include social and natural science specialists who are experts on the various ecosystem components, and thus can provide definitive information. As a group, they can translate the ecosystem model into understandable language for decision- makers to use in and implementing various management strategies for the Great Lakes ecosystem. The conceptual framework outlined in this workshop report can be developed into an operational network that can provide a logical focus for coordinated analysis of important policy issues spanning many sectors in the basin.
