Book excerpt: The report is concerned with problems of bending of thin, elastic, shallow spherical shells of uniform thickness. Explicit expressions are derived, in terms of stress function and axial displacement component, for radial and circumferential displacement components. It is shown that certain uni-valued portions of the solution for stress function and axial displacement components give rise to multi-valued expressions for radial and circumferential displacement components. A new type of solution of the differential equations is derived which is multi-valued insofar as the stress function is concerned but given uni-valued expressions for all quantities which should be uni-valued. It is shown that this type of solution is needed for the analysis of problems for which a resultant side force is acting along the edge of a symmetrical circular boundary of the shell. The nature and form of this side-force solution differs in important respects from the corresponding known solution for the case of a flat plate. No direct transition is possible from the shell solution to the corresponding flat-plate solution. As a specific application, a shell is considered which is supported at its outer edge and which has a small symmetrical rigid insert.

According to Abraham Pais (in "Subtle is the Lord ...• " Oxford University Press. 1982. p.80). the first international scientific conference ever held was the Karlsruhe Congress of Chemists. 3-5 September 1860 in Karlsruhe. Germany. There were 127 chemists in attendance. and the participants came from Austria. Belgium. France. Germany. Great Britain. Italy. Mexico. Poland. Russia. Spain. Sweden. and Switzerland. At the top of the agenda of the points to be discussed at this conference was the question: "Shall a difference be made between the expressions molecule and atom?" Pais goes on to note: "The conference did not at once succeed in bringing chemists closer together ... It is possible that the older men were offended by the impetuous behavior and imposing manner of the younger scientists" (see references cited in Pais' book). It may be observed that history. in general. repeats itself. However. at ICCM-86 in Tokyo. roughly 500 participants from both the West and the East were in attendance; there were only scholarly exchanges; the young tried to learn from the more experienced. and a spirit of international academic cooperation prevailed.

The symposium provided a forum for discussing various topics related to mechanics, from the pseudo-elasticity of living tissues and compression of spherical cells to kinematically unstable space frameworks. Reissner's equations for sandwich plates are also considered. Comprised of 36 chapters, this volume begins with an analysis of the state of stress near the boundary of a thick plate by means of "end solutions" obtained from Reissner's sheaf deformation plate theory. A deformable primary reflecting surface composed of an array of relatively small diameter circular elements is then described. The discussion then turns to the "Taylor instability" of the surface of an elastic-plastic plate; free vibration spectrum structure of a shell of revolution; and the momentum-balance method in earthquake engineering. Subsequent chapters focus on the intrinsic equations of shell theory with some applications; stress analysis in plasticity; density-wave theory of the spiral structure of galaxies; and a mixture theory for wave propagation in anisotropic angle-ply laminates. This book will be of interest to engineers and physicists.

Formerly a subject of interest only to a few special ists and for which the literature was relatively smalI, the needs of structures for aerospace missions instigated a torrent of papers on all facets of the theory which also found application in the less glamorous earthbound shell struc tures important in everyday life. Some idea of the rapidity of the development can be gained from the fact that a bibliography* completed in 1953 listed some 1455 books and papers as the sum total ofthe literature on shell theory to that date. Three years later, however, a supplementt added another 884 papers to the list, an increase of 60 per cent in that short period of time. The number of papers published since these listings has increased to an extent that does not bear contemplation. Obviously no single volume could contain all that constitutes the theory of shells and so this book is restricted to that portion of the theory associated with small deformations of elastic shells. Plastic deformations of shells, which is hardly developed, and nonlinear deformations and stability, which would require at least aseparate volume, are thus excluded. Even with this restriction, however, the present volume represents a long overdue compro mise between completeness and finiteness. In making this compromise I have undoubtedly omitted discussions of many topics and references to many excellent papers which should have been included.
