Book On the Detection of Ion Oscillations in a Mercury Discharge

Download or read book On the Detection of Ion Oscillations in a Mercury Discharge written by Burton D. Fried and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possibility of using a low pressure mercury discharge to detect ion plasma oscillations was examined. It was found that 1) collisions will not interfere with the phenomenon; 2) the current which maintains the discharge will cause the waves to grow (through the two-stream instability) in a time comparable with or less than the oscillation period. Aside from complications caused by the fact that the maximum growth occurs at rather short wavelengths, detection of these waves appears quite feasible. (Author).

Book Nonlinear Electron Wave Interaction Phenomena

Download or read book Nonlinear Electron Wave Interaction Phenomena written by Joseph E. Rowe and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Electron-Wave Interaction Phenomena explores the interaction between drifting streams of charged particles and propagating electromagnetic waves. Of particular concern are the situations in which the wave amplitude is large and there is strong coupling between the charged fluid and the wave. Emphasis is placed on those devices that utilize a defined injected stream of some type. Particle and electromagnetic wave velocities both small and comparable to the velocity of light are considered. Comprised of 16 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to the various classes of devices in which the drifting stream (charged fluid) is composed of electrons and/or ions coupled to a slow electromagnetic wave over an extended region. The discussion then turns to Eulerian versus Lagrangian formulation and radio-frequency equivalent circuits, along with space-charge-field expressions. Subsequent chapters focus on the interaction mechanisms in klystrons, traveling-wave amplifiers, and O-type backward-wave oscillators, as well as crossed-field forward- and backward-wave amplifiers, and traveling-wave energy converters. The book also evaluates multibeam and beam-plasma interactions; phase focusing of electron bunches; pre-bunched electron beams; collector depression techniques; and modulation characteristics. This monograph is designed to serve both as a research monograph for workers in the fields of microwave electron and plasma devices and as a text for advanced graduate students.

Book Oscillations and Noise in Low Pressure DC Discharges

Download or read book Oscillations and Noise in Low Pressure DC Discharges written by F. W. Crawford and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis is concerned mainly with oscillations and fluctuations which occur either spontaneously, or as a result of deliberate excitation, in low-pressure, hot-cathode plasmas. Experimental observations on high and low frequency effects occurring spontaneously are discussed, and speculations are made on the possible gener-ATION MECHANISMS. In many cases, theories of these mechanisms have been treated in experiments involving deliberate excitation of oscillations, and comparisons are made where relevant. For device applications, and to relieve the difficulties which occur in quantitative experiments in plasma physics, it is important that the sources of spontaneous oscillations should be understood and suppressed if possible. The analysis includes a discussion of work which has been carried out to reduce these effects, and concludes with some suggestions for further lines of attack on the problems. (Author).
