Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atomic Weight of Hydrogen Some years ago the writer1 carried out a series of determinations of the quantitative composition of water, from which the value was calculated for the atomic weight of oxygen on the hydrogen basis. The opinion was expressed, in the paper, that the true value was probably within one part in a thousand of this num ber and that it was rather below than above the value reported. Several years later Morley2 published an account of his elaborate determinations of the densities of hydrogen and oxygen and of the composition of water by weight, which led him to the value for oxygen, or for hydrogen (o 2 Meanwhile Richards3 had shown that copper oxide retains occluded gases obstinately, a fact which was partly known to me at the time of my work, but which was not as carefully considered as it should have been. There was obtained in each of my experiments, at the end, a small amount of gas which was assumed to be nitrogen on the basis of one or two rather imperfect analyses of the earlier samples. The weight of this gas, calculated as nitrogen, was subtracted from the weight of the hydrogen, giving, on the average, a correction of about one part in a thousand. Several years after the publication of Morley's results it occurred to me that this gas came, very probably, from the copper oxide, and that its weight should be subtracted from the weight of the oxygen instead of from that of the hydrogen. On applying the correction in this manner the value (or was found. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An American Scientist on the Research Frontier

Download or read book An American Scientist on the Research Frontier written by Ralph R. Hamerla and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-07-04 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American Scientist on the Research Frontier is the first scholarly study of the nineteenth-century American scientist Edward Williams Morley. In part, it is the long-overdue story of a man who lent his name to the Michelson and Morley Ether-Drift Experiment, and who conclusively established the atomic weight of oxygen. It is also the untold story of science in provincial America: what Hamerla presents as science on the "American research frontier". This important examination of Morley’s struggle for personal and professional legitimacy extends and transforms our understanding of science during a foundational period, and leads to a number of unique conclusions that are vital to the literature and historiography of science. By revealing important aspects of the scientific culture of the American heartland, An American Scientist on the Research Frontier deepens our understanding of an individual scientist and of American science more broadly. In so doing, Hamerla changes the way we approach and understand the creation of scientific knowledge, scientific communities, and the history of science itself.

Download or read book Chemistry written by A. Truman Schwartz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry: Imagination and Implication focuses on the importance and impact of chemistry on daily living. This book discusses the essential concepts of chemistry and its application. Organized into 16 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the experimental facts, principles, and methods of chemistry as an aid in exercising intelligent and informed judgment in instances where controversy surrounds the interaction of chemistry with society or the individual. This text then explores the practical arts of metallurgy, which achieved a considerable degree of sophistication long before they were scientifically understood. The reader is then introduced to the atomic concept, the conservation of mass, as well as to the substances that constitute the living things. Other chapters consider the polymerization of amino acids into peptides and proteins. The final chapter examines the various applications of radioactive isotopes produced in particle accelerators. This book is intended for students and teachers who are involved in a chemistry course.
