Book A Case for the Divinity of Jesus

Download or read book A Case for the Divinity of Jesus written by Dean L. Overman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether Jesus was really the Son of God or not is a central question for Christians-and one that has provoked heated debate since the time of Jesus' birth. Dean L. Overman examines the earliest Christian records to build a compelling case for the divinity of Jesus. Addressing questions raised by books such as Bart Ehrman's Misquoting Jesus and Elaine Pagels' The Gnostic Gospels, Overman builds a carefully reasoned case for Jesus truly being the Son of God.

Book Jesus of Nazareth

  • Author : Gerald L. Borchert
  • Publisher : Mercer University Press
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 0881462667
  • Pages : 277 pages

Download or read book Jesus of Nazareth written by Gerald L. Borchert and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus of Nazareth is a comprehensive introduction to Jesus and the gospels for college and seminary students. It begins with discussions on communication and patterns of reading the Bible before detailing the historical setting, the geographical, social and religious contexts during the time of Jesus, such as the language and community aspects, and the rabbinic, literary and institutional settings that were present. Next, Borchert discusses the nature of the gospels before each gospel witness is treated individually to identify the particular uniqueness of the portrait of Jesus that is being presented by each author. The non-canonical portraits of Jesus are also introduced in order to help readers understand the struggles, which emerged in the early church. Finally, the significance of Jesus who is the focus of the gospels is presented. After reviewing the time issues for Jesus, theological concerns related to Jesus are considered such as: the virginal conception and the incarnation, the issues of temptation and sin, the relationship of Jesus to God and the messianic consciousness of Jesus, the crucial issues of the death and resurrection of the Messiah, and the Church¿s expectation of the return of Jesus in power. This important theological section concludes with discussions on the integrity of our understanding of Jesus and the very sensitive nature of proof as compared to the nature of belief. Borchert weighs these matters fairly, bearing in mind his own presuppositions. He closes the work with suggested implications of this study in terms of doubt and rejection on the one hand and worship as well as living and witnessing to and for Jesus on the other. Written with clarity and erudition, this accessible introduction reflects a life-time of both classroom and church experience in the teaching the Gospels.

Book excerpt: Even mature Christians have trouble defending the person and divinity of Christ. The Jesus Legend builds a convincing interdisciplinary case for the unique and plausible position of Jesus in human history. He was real and his presence on the planet has been well-documented. The authors of the New Testament didn't plant evidence, though each writer did tell the truth from a unique perspective. This book carefully investigates the Gospel portraits of Jesus--particularly the Synoptic Gospels--assessing what is reliable history and fictional legend. The authors contend that a cumulative case for the general reliability of the Synoptic Gospels can be made and boldly challenge those who question the veracity of the Jesus found there.
