Book The Construction of Cranes and Other Lifting MacHinery

Download or read book The Construction of Cranes and Other Lifting MacHinery written by Edward Charles Robert Marks and published by Rarebooksclub.com. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ...100 and 101 modifications of the loose path are shown, in one of which (fig. 101) they are formed internally. The pressure of the superstructure of the crane upon the path is sufficient to keep it stationary when slewing or rotating under f ordinary conditions, but should the mechanism be suddenly stopped or started, the additional stress occasioned, instead of breaking the wheel teeth, or causing failure of some other part of the machine, as has so frequently happened where a fixed path is employed, would simply cause the loose path to revolve slightly upon its seat until the shock had spent itself. It will thus be seen that a loose roller path performs very much the same service for a crane that a safety valve does for a steam boiler. Under ordinary working conditions the loose roller path, like the safety valve, does not come into action; but so soon as any undue stress is brought upon the crane, the path yields, as the friction between it and its seating on the base plate is insufficient to resist anything beyond the ordinary stress of working. The loose path has also an advantage in that its occasional movement prevents the rollers from rubbing and wearing it in one place, or upon one small portion only, for in the majority of cases a crane is not often required to swing round in a complete circle, the chief work being confined to an angle of about 90 degrees; so that the path of a fixed crane will be quickly worn down in that one portion only, whilst the movement, in the case of a loose path, will cause the wearing to be equalised and distributed all round the ring; and further, a loose path can be readily renewed at any time, whereas the wearing down of a fixed path would in most cases mean a sacrifice of the whole bed or base...

Book An Elementary Treatise on Hoisting Machinery

Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Hoisting Machinery written by Joseph Horner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Hoisting Machinery: Including the Elements of Crane Construction and Descriptions of the Various Types of Cranes in Use His work is an attempt to present in a concise form the leading characteristics of the various types of cranes now made. These are so numerous that a full treatment of all of them would be impossible in a single volume, even of larger size, and the aim has been to keep the book within small limits. Several types have become, or are fast becoming, specialised in the hands of a few firms. The writer has had a long experience in, the work of crane construction, and in the course of those years has become familiar with all the types he has hcre described, with the exception of a few that are patented specialities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cranes Impossible TO drop A suspended load, whether through use, misuse, careless ness or neglect, or, in the case of our hand-operated cranes, to injure A workman BY flying han dles IN lowering A load. These features alone make our cranes superior, and they have been appreciated by most large concerns and railroad companies in this country. We are the sole patentees and builders of the Cantilever and Gantry Cranes shown on pages 67 to 92 inclusive, and have attained in these machines, owing to their peculiar construction, speeds much beyond anything ever attempted by any other crane builders in this country or in Europe. The success of these cranes is well attested by the fact that we receive orders for them from all parts of the world. Book Machine Design

Download or read book Machine Design written by H. D. Hess and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Machine Design: Hoists, Derricks, Cranes The author believes that no class of problems afford as good general training and practice as may be had in the design of cranes. The larger portion of crane details being the simplest machine elements are common to a wide field of machine design. The stresses both in the frames and machinery are readily determined by the elementary principles of mechanics and the design thus easily carried out on a theoretical rather than on an empirical basis. The book is intended to aid the work of machine design in technical schools and colleges and it is hoped it may prove useful in drawing-rooms where a general field of machine design is covered. The problems have been selected with this in view rather than that of appealing to the specialist in crane design. The engineering literature drawn upon includes the works of Bach, Bethmann and Ernst, and Machinery and Engineering Record among the periodicals. Through the kindness of several crane builders, catalogues, photographs, specifications and drawings, illustrating American practice, have been placed at our disposal. Book Hydraulic Steam and Hand Power Lifting and Pressing Machinery Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hydraulic Steam and Hand Power Lifting and Pressing Machinery Classic Reprint written by Frederick Colyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-28 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydraulic, Steam, and Hand Power Lifting and Pressing Machinery The author, having heard a desire expressed by many for a practical treatise upon Hydraulic, Steam, and Hand Power Lifting and Pressing Machinery, has been induced to under take the task. The work is addressed to engineers whose practice has not been in this branch of engineering. Also to architects and users of such machinery, to give them an insight into the same, and to afford some help, either in the design or as a guide to the adoption of machinery suitable to the special requirements of the particular case. Most of the machinery and work described, except some cases specially mentioned, are from the author's own experience. Assuming that practical men are chiefly addressed, he has not gone into any rudimentary descriptions, but has mentioned only such details as may be useful for the purpose. Very little discussion is entered into relative to the value of certain machines, for the same reason; but the few results given from practice may prove more useful. He trusts that the work may be acceptable to those who are seeking information in this branch of practice. The work has been written in a concise form, as it was thought it would be more acceptable to those addressed to have practical facts and data expressed in as few words as possible. The author fears, owing to the want of time at his disposal, that the work is not in such a perfect form as he would have wished; be, however, trusts all shortcomings in this respect will meet with lenient judgment from his readers.
