Book New Asian Disorder

Download or read book New Asian Disorder written by Lowell Dittmer and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In New Asian Disorder: Rivalries Embroiling the Pacific Century, Lowell Dittmer and his team explore the recent political disorder in East Asia resulting from growing Sino-American polarization. The rise of China in recent years is widely regarded as a momentous shift in the global balance of power. China is now extending sovereignty into the East China Sea and the South China Sea, constructing a new set of global financial institutions and replacing “universal values” with technologically enhanced nationalism. The country’s “Belt and Road Initiative” is also tainted by the vast ambition to realize the “China Dream” within the foreseeable future. In response to China’s challenge, the United States has abandoned its “constructive engagement” policy towards the rising power and engaged in a trade war. Sino-American relations have been at a historical trough since the normalization of their relationship in the late 1970s. This book sheds new light on the current political disorder in the East Asian international arena. The new Asian disorder is analyzed from three perspectives: the first focuses on identity, the second on political economy, and the third on the triangular dynamic. This collection of essays concludes that, unless and until consensus can be reached on a coherent new framework for cooperation and rule enforcement among different stakeholders in East Asia, the current disorder may be expected to persist. “Focusing on the impact of Xi Jinping and Donald Trump, this book sees rivalries undermining the post–Cold War order but not leading to a full breakdown. Stress is on identities, strategies, and triangles related to the Sino-US rivalry. Dittmer argues that these factors will drive further changes. Readers will find a diversity of approaches on a most critical bilateral relationship.” —Gilbert Rozman, Princeton University; editor of The Asan Forum “A great read to better comprehend the ‘New Asian Disorder’ that the growing China-US rivalry has been contributing to, as well as its implications for the other actors of the region, be they big as Japan or smaller as Australia, Southeast Asian nations or Taiwan.” —Jean-Pierre Cabestan, Hong Kong Baptist University; senior research fellow of the French Research Institute on East Asia, Inalco, Paris

Book The Rise of East Asia

Download or read book The Rise of East Asia written by Mark Berger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is great interest in the Pacific Century and what its implications for the future will be. The rapid economic growth of East Asia was already setting the region apart from the rest of the world by the 1970s. By the 1980s the trend was seen to have spread southward to Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, while China's provinces had also become integral to the regional economic boom. In this exciting new study many of the ideas and expectations associated with the Pacific Century are placed under critical scrutiny. The book includes studies of particular countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia. There is analysis of economic and political trends in the region, the reasons behind its rise and its importance on a global scale. The rise of East Asia represents an historic turning point with immense significance world-wide. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An urgently needed risk map of the many dangers that could derail Asia s growth and stability Since Marco Polo, the West has waited for the Asian Century. Today, the world believes that Century has arrived. Yet from China s slumping economy to war clouds over the South China Sea and from environmental devastation to demographic crisis, Asia s future is increasingly uncertain. Historian and geopolitical expert Michael Auslin argues that far from being a cohesive powerhouse, Asia is a fractured region threatened by stagnation and instability. Here, he provides a comprehensive account of the economic, military, political, and demographic risks that bedevil half of our world, arguing that Asia, working with the United States, has a unique opportunity to avert catastrophe but only if it acts boldly. Bringing together firsthand observations and decades of research, Auslin s provocative reassessment of Asia s future will be a must-read for industry and investors, as well as politicians and scholars, for years to come.

Book Korea in the Pacific Century

Download or read book Korea in the Pacific Century written by Tae Woo Roh and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roh Tae Woo was born into a farming family in 1932. He was raised in a small village which is now a part of Taegu, Korea's third largest city. He attended Taegu's Kyongbuk High School graduating in 1951. The outbreak of the Korean War thwarted his ambition to be a medical doctor and, instead, he joined the army and served as a combat infantryman. In 1952, he was accepted into the prestigious Korean Military Academy. After a distinguished military career, he retired as a four-star general in 1981. President Roh's civil service career began in July 1981 with his appointment as Minister of State for National Security and Foreign Affairs, a position he held until he was named the first Minister of Sports in March 1982. Subsequently, he held such positions as Minister of Home Affairs, President of the Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee and the Korean Amateur Sports Association, and member of the National Assembly. He was elected president of Korea on December 16, 1987 and sworn in on February 25, 1988. In addition to his duties as the nation's Chief Executive, President Roh serves as leader of the ruling Democratic Liberal Party. During the 1987 presidential campaign, he surprised his opponents and supporters alike by proposing a sweeping political reform package. His June 29 Declaration for Democratic Reform led to the democratization of Korea after decades of authoritarianism. Today, civil liberties are protected, fair elections are guaranteed and there is a stable balance of power in the Korean government. Despite the challenges of fundamental political reform, Korea's economic growth rate has remained high, averaging 9 percent during the Roh administration. Both gross national product and per capita income have doubled during President Roh's tenure. This experience has shown that economic development can go hand-in-hand with political reform, an important lesson for the world's emerging democracies. The Roh administration also has achieved remarkable successes in the realm of foreign affairs. In September 1988, Seoul hosted the Olympic Games. For the first time in years, the sporting festival was unfettered by political boycotts and, in fact, a record number of nations participated. The 1988 Seoul Games are considered the most successful Olympics ever. Also in 1988, President Roh unveiled his "Northern Policy," which sought to improve Seoul's relations not only with North Korea but also with the North's allies in the socialist world. Today, all major nations of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union have normalized relations with Seoul. Korea also has established extensive economic and cultural ties with China. Reacting to the shifting international environment, North Korea agreed to open the first-ever high-level official talks with Seoul and embraced South Korea's proposal for full membership of both the South and the North in the United Nations. In 1992, Seoul and P'yongyang forged several landmark agreements aimed at tension reduction and reconciliation. For the first time since national division in 1945, solid progress is being made toward Korean reunification.

Download or read book The New Security Agenda in the Asia Pacific Region written by Denny Roy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of security studies is undergoing a major re-evaluation in the post-Cold War era, and this has important implications for the region. The security dangers of the 1990s and beyond are different and more complex than those of the Cold War, and strategic thinkers both in the academic and policy-making spheres must begin to understand the new environment lest they fall into the old trap of planning for the next conflict based on the conditions of the last conflict. This book is designed to survey the new environment, assessing what has changed and what remains the same, and suggesting what types of demands future strategists will face.

Book What Is in a Rim

Download or read book What Is in a Rim written by Arif Dirlik and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 1998-03-05 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pathbreaking, multidisciplinary work challenges our unthinking acceptance of such terms as 'Asia Pacific' and 'Pacific Rim.' Clarifying the hidden power relationships and hegemonic struggles that are disguised by ideological constructions of the region, the contributors uncover fundamental contradictions_including the human costs and consequences_that underlie the much-celebrated economic boom. In evaluating the idea of 'Asia Pacific,' the book shifts our focus from abstract relationships between capital and commodities to the human interactions that have played a formative part in the region's constitution. The contributors agree that it is these interactions that constitute the region, rather than the physical boundaries of the Pacific. This revised and updated edition brings in additional essays focusing on conceptualizations of the Pacific, considers more fully interactions among countries, and strongly emphasizes peoples within the Pacific, who are routinely ignored in most discussions of the 'Rim.'
