Book Axially Symmetric Transient Wave Propagation in Elastic Rods with Nonuniform Section

Download or read book Axially Symmetric Transient Wave Propagation in Elastic Rods with Nonuniform Section written by P. C. Y. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one dimensional approximate theory is derived for an elastic circular rod with nonuniform cross section. Three coupled equations, taking into account the longitudinal, radial, and axial shear deformations and their inertias, are obtained as an extension of the Mindlin-McNiven theory to the case of nonuniform rods. Responses of both the semi-infinite rod and finite rod with elastic end support due to either a step or a pulse loading are studied by the method of characteristics. Calculated results such as stresses versus time for different stations along the rod and stresses as functions of distance for instants of time are presented and compared for several cases. The geometrical effect of the variation of section on the stresses and velocities and the effect of the elastic support on the reflection and propagation of the stress waves are deduced. (Author).

Book R D Mindlin and Applied Mechanics

Download or read book R D Mindlin and Applied Mechanics written by George Herrmann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R. D. Mindlin and Applied Mechanics is a collection of studies in the development of Applied Mechanics dedicated to Professor Raymond D. Mindlin by his former students. This book contains the development of specific areas of Mechanics of Solids to which Mindlin has contributed most. Organized into eight chapters, this text first discusses the past, present and likely future of photoelasticity. Subsequent chapters explore the development of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity; generalized elastic continua; bodies in contact with applications to granular media; and waves and vibrations in isotropic and anisotropic plates. Other chapters discuss the vibrations and wave propagation in rods, piezoelectric crystals, and electro-elasticity. Lastly, the lattice theories and continuum mechanics are described.

Download or read book Physical Acoustics written by Warren P. Mason and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Acoustics: Principles and Methods, Volume l—Part A focuses on high frequency sound waves in gases, liquids, and solids that have been proven as powerful tools in analyzing the molecular, defect, domain wall, and other types of motions. The selection first tackles wave propagation in fluids and normal solids and guided wave propagation in elongated cylinders and plates. Discussions focus on fundamentals of continuum mechanics; small-amplitude waves in a linear viscoelastic medium; representation of oscillations and waves; and special effects associated with guided elastic waves in plates and cylinders. The book also touches on piezoelectric and piezomagnetic materials and their functions in transducers, including polycrystalline ferroelectrics, equations of the piezoelectric medium, and equivalent circuits. The publication takes a look at ultrasonic methods for measuring the mechanical properties of liquids and solids and the use of piezoelectric crystals and mechanical resonators in filters and oscillators. The text then ponders on guided wave ultrasonic delay lines and multiple reflection ultrasonic delay lines, as well as transmission of sound waves in solids, torsional mode delay lines, and transducer considerations. The selection is a valuable reference for readers interested in physical acoustics.

Book The Theory of Elastic Waves and Waveguides

Download or read book The Theory of Elastic Waves and Waveguides written by J. Miklowitz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this book is to give the reader a basic understanding of waves and their propagation in a linear elastic continuum. The studies of elastodynamic theory and its application to fundamental value problems should prepare the reader to tackle many physical problems of general interest in engineering and geophysics, and of particular interest in mechanics and seismology.

Book Ultrasonic Methods in Solid State Physics

Download or read book Ultrasonic Methods in Solid State Physics written by Rohn Truell and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasonic Methods in Solid State Physics is devoted to studies of energy loss and velocity of ultrasonic waves which have a bearing on present-day problems in solid-state physics. The discussion is particularly concerned with the type of investigation that can be carried out in the megacycle range of frequencies from a few megacycles to kilomegacycles; it deals almost entirely with short-duration pulse methods rather than with standing-wave methods. The book opens with a chapter on a classical treatment of wave propagation in solids. This is followed by separate chapters on methods and techniques of ultrasonic pulse echo measurements, and the physics of ultrasonically measurable properties of solids. It is hoped that this book will provide the reader with the special background necessary to read critically the many research papers and special articles concerned with the use of ultrasonic methods in solid state physics. The book is intended to help the person beginning work in this field. At the same time, it will also be useful to those actively involved in such work. An attempt has been made to provide a fairly general and unified treatment suitable for graduate students and others without extensive experience.

Book Wave Propagation in Elastic Solids

Download or read book Wave Propagation in Elastic Solids written by J. D. Achenbach and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-21 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave Propagation in Elastic Solids focuses on linearized theory and perfectly elastic media. This book discusses the one-dimensional motion of an elastic continuum; linearized theory of elasticity; elastodynamic theory; and elastic waves in an unbounded medium. The plane harmonic waves in elastic half-spaces; harmonic waves in waveguides; and forced motions of a half-space are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the transient waves in layers and rods; diffraction of waves by a slit; and thermal and viscoelastic effects, and effects of anisotropy and nonlinearity. Other topics include the summary of equations in rectangular coordinates, time-harmonic plane waves, approximate theories for rods, and transient in-plane motion of a layer. This publication is a good source for students and researchers conducting work on the wave propagation in elastic solids.

Book Wave Propagation in Elastic Solids

Download or read book Wave Propagation in Elastic Solids written by Jan Achenbach and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propagation of mechanical disturbances in solids is of interest in many branches of the physical scienses and engineering. This book aims to present an account of the theory of wave propagation in elastic solids. The material is arranged to present an exposition of the basic concepts of mechanical wave propagation within a one-dimensional setting and a discussion of formal aspects of elastodynamic theory in three dimensions, followed by chapters expounding on typical wave propagation phenomena, such as radiation, reflection, refraction, propagation in waveguides, and diffraction. The treatment necessarily involves considerable mathematical analysis. The pertinent mathematical techniques are, however, discussed at some length.
