Book Germ Theory and Its Applications to Medicine on the Antiseptic Principle of the Practice of Surgery

Download or read book Germ Theory and Its Applications to Medicine on the Antiseptic Principle of the Practice of Surgery written by Louis Pasteur and published by Great Minds Series. This book was released on 1996 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the introduction of antisepsis and inoculation, people commonly died due to unsanitary conditions in the home, or following surgery or childbirth. Between them, the great scientists Louis Pasteur (1822-1893) and Joseph Lister (1827-1912) extended widely the practice of inoculation and revolutionized medical practice. Pasteur's discovery that living organisms are the cause of fermentation formed the basis of the modern germ theory. Following Pasteur's researches, Lister proceeded to develop his antiseptic surgical methods. These breakthroughs in medicine are to be reckoned among the greatest discoveries of the nineteenth century.

Book The Butchering Art

Download or read book The Butchering Art written by Lindsey Fitzharris and published by Scientific American / Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2018 PEN/E.O. Wilson Prize for Literary Science Writing Short-listed for the 2018 Wellcome Book Prize A Top 10 Science Book of Fall 2017, Publishers Weekly A Best History Book of 2017, The Guardian "Warning: She spares no detail!" —Erik Larson, bestselling author of Dead Wake In The Butchering Art, the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of nineteenth-century surgery and shows how it was transformed by advances made in germ theory and antiseptics between 1860 and 1875. She conjures up early operating theaters—no place for the squeamish—and surgeons, who, working before anesthesia, were lauded for their speed and brute strength. These pioneers knew that the aftermath of surgery was often more dangerous than patients’ afflictions, and they were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. At a time when surgery couldn’t have been more hazardous, an unlikely figure stepped forward: a young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister, who would solve the riddle and change the course of history. Fitzharris dramatically reconstructs Lister’s career path to his audacious claim that germs were the source of all infection and could be countered by a sterilizing agent applied to wounds. She introduces us to Lister’s contemporaries—some of them brilliant, some outright criminal—and leads us through the grimy schools and squalid hospitals where they learned their art, the dead houses where they studied, and the cemeteries they ransacked for cadavers. Eerie and illuminating, The Butchering Art celebrates the triumph of a visionary surgeon whose quest to unite science and medicine delivered us into the modern world.

Book Medical Theory Surgical Practice

Download or read book Medical Theory Surgical Practice written by Christopher Lawrence and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1992, Medical Theory, Surgical Practice examines medical and surgical concepts of disease and their relation to the practice of surgery, in particular historical settings. It emphasises that understanding concepts of disease does not just include recounting explicit accounts of disease given by medical men. It needs an analysis of the social relations embedded in such concepts. In doing this, the contributors illustrate how surgery rose from a relatively humble place in seventeenth century life to being seen as one of the great achievements of late Victorian culture. They examine how medical theory and surgical practices relate to social contexts, how physical diagnosis entered medicine and whether anaesthesia and Lister’s antiseptic techniques really did cause a revolution in surgical practice.

Book The Rules of Aseptic and Antiseptic Surgery

Download or read book The Rules of Aseptic and Antiseptic Surgery written by Arpad G. Gerster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rules of Aseptic and Antiseptic Surgery: A Practical Treatise for the Use of Students, and the General Practitioner The object of this volume is a systematic yet practical presentation of the Listerian principle that has revolutionized surgery within the last fifteen years. Its adoption has wrought so many incisive changes in practice, has shifted the surgeons standpoint regarding all the important disciplines of the art in such a radical manner, that most English textbooks of surgery, even those recently published, have become partly or entirely inadequate to the wants of the modern physician. To a large number of medical men the aseptic and antiseptic methods present an incongruous chaos of seemingly contradictory and often incomprehensible detail, arbitrary and varying, according to the predilections or whims of this or that teacher. Yet the principle involved is based on the correct observation of a common biological process - namely, that of the decomposition of organic substances. The well-known methods employed since the earliest dawn of civilization for the preservation of organic, especially animal, substances, are based upon the empirical yet correct appreciation of the causes of putrefaction, and the practical adaptation of these methods to the healing of operative or accidental wounds contains the whole essence of the new surgery. Evils that former generations of surgeons deplored, but could not effectually combat, such as septicæmia, pyæmia, hospital gangrene, and erysipelas, have been much abated, as a direct consequence of a clear understanding of their essential nature and causation. Prevention has become the watchword of modern practice, and it can be said that, by the successful employment of the preventive methods of the present day, surgery has become a conservative branch of the healing art. Book Global Gidelines for the Pevention of Surgical Site Infection

Download or read book Global Gidelines for the Pevention of Surgical Site Infection written by World Health Organization and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surgical site infections are caused by bacteria that get in through incisions made during surgery. They threaten the lives of millions of patients each year and contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance. In low- and middle-income countries, 11% of patients who undergo surgery are infected in the process. In Africa, up to 20% of women who have a caesarean section contract a wound infection, compromising their own health and their ability to care for their babies. But surgical site infections are not just a problem for poor countries. In the United States, they contribute to patients spending more than 400 000 extra days in hospital at a cost of an additional US $10 billion per year. No international evidence-based guidelines had previously been available before WHO launched its global guidelines on the prevention of surgical site infection on 3 November 2016, and there are inconsistencies in the interpretation of evidence and recommendations in existing national guidelines. These new WHO guidelines are valid for any country and suitable to local adaptations, and take account of the strength of available scientific evidence, the cost and resource implications, and patient values and preferences.
