Book excerpt: "To discover astonishing rocks and landforms in the Beaver State, all that is required is a good map, a sense of adventure, and Oregon Rocks, a guide to 60 of the most compelling geologic sites in the state. The well-chosen destinations span the state's geologic history from the Triassic marble at Oregon Caves to the 240-year-old lava dome on Mt. Hood. With more active volcanoes than any other state in the Lower Forty-Eight, Oregon boasts towering behemoths, steaming fumaroles, and eroding cinder cones. Geologist Marli Miller will guide you through the ash and lava from recent eruptions to find evidence of older ones, including a supervolcano possibly produced by the Yellowstone hot spot before it tracked east, and lava that flowed all the way to the coast from eruptions near the Oregon-Idaho border. Although residents of eastern and western Oregon may not admit they have anything in common, the barnacled sea stacks near Cannon Beach and Tillamook are composed of the exact same rock as stacked lava flows on the Columbia Plateau. With beautiful photographs and informative figures and maps, this guidebook will unite Oregonians in their pursuit of outdoor exploration, be it rock hounding, peak bagging, beachcombing, or contemplating their place in the long history of the Earth"--

Book Alkaline Rocks and Carbonatites of the World Part 4

Download or read book Alkaline Rocks and Carbonatites of the World Part 4 written by A.R. Woolley and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2019-09-02 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The alkaline igneous rocks and carbonatites are compositionally and mineralogically the most diverse of all igneous rocks and, apart from their scientific interest, are of major, and growing, economic importance. They are important repositories of certain metals and commodities, indeed the only significant sources of some of them, and include Nb, the rare earths, Cu, V, diamond, phosphate, vermiculite, bauxite, raw materials for the manufacture of ceramics, and potentially Th and U. The economic potential of these rocks is now widely appreciated, particularly since the commencement of the mining of the Palabora carbonatite for copper and a host of valuable by-products. Similarly, the crucial economic dominance of rare earth production from carbonatite-related occurrences in China, has stimulated the world-wide hunt for similar deposits. This volume describes and provides ready access to the literature for all known occurrences of alkaline igneous rocks and carbonatites of Antarctica, Asia and Europe excluding the former USSR, Australasia and oceanic islands. More than 1,200 occurrences from 59 countries are outlined together with those of 57 oceanic islands and island groups. The descriptions include geographical coordinates and information on general geology, rock types, petrography, mineralogy, age and economic aspects with the principal references cited. There are 429 geological and distribution maps and a locality index. As has been demonstrated by the three earlier volumes, the present book is likely to be of considerable interest to mineral exploration companies, as there are no comprehensive published reviews of the economic aspects of the alkaline rocks. It will also interest research scientists in the fields of igneous petrology and volcanology, and geologists concerned with the regional distribution of igneous rocks and their geodynamic relationships.

Book The Field Description of Metamorphic Rocks

Download or read book The Field Description of Metamorphic Rocks written by Norman Fry and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-03 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geological Society of London Handbook Series Edited by KeithCox Founded in 1807, the Geological Society of London has beenpublishing since 1845 and now distributes its journal to Fellowsthroughout the world. This Handbook is published as part ofa series of authoritative practical guides to field geology. The Field Description of Metamorphic Rocks "This handbook describes how metamorphic rocks and rock masses maybe observed, recorded and mapped in the field. Written at a levelsuitable for undergraduate students of geology, this book (as withits companion volumes in the series) has firmly established itselfas an essential tool for any geologist -- student, professional oramateur -- faced with the task of making a general description ofan area of metamorphic rocks. A clear, systematic frameworktogether with numerous diagrams, illustrations and checklistsenables readers to produce useful and broadly similar descriptions, despite possible differences of background or specialist interest. This well-written and well-produced little text will, I am certain, become standard reading for most geology undergraduates. It willalso interest many geologists who do not regularly work inmetamorphic terrains and will be particularly useful to engineeringgeologists and civil engineers who are often concerned withdescribing the fabrics of metamorphic rocks without being concernedabout their origins." --M.E. Jones, Mineralogical Magazine Contents: * Metamorphic Fieldwork and Mapping * Names and Categories of Metamorphic Rocks and Rock Units * Rock Banding * Minerals * Compositions * Grade * Textures * Fabric Types * Relations to Structures * Undeformed Pods * Augen * Pseudomorphs * Veins * Igneous Contacts * Metasomatism * Reaction Zones * Fault-Zones and Mylonites * Reference Tables and Checklists

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of different kinds of igneous rocks can be understood in terms of their tectonic setting, and by way of the isotope compositions of strontium, neodymium, and lead. This book explains the petrogenesis of igneous rocks as a consequence of tectonic processes resulting from interactions between asthenopheric plumes and the overlying lithospheric mantle. The relevant principles of isotope geochemistry are explained in the first chapter, making it accessible for university students as well as professionals. The relevant isotopic data is presented in diagrammatic form. The book contains more than 400 original drawings.

Download or read book Earth s Oldest Rocks written by Martin J. Van Kranendonk and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 1114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earth's Oldest Rocks, Second Edition, is the only single reference source for geological research of early Earth. This new edition is an up-to-date collection of scientific articles on all aspects of the early history of the Earth, from planetary accretion at 4.567 billion years ago (Ga), to the onset of modern-style plate tectonics at 3.2 Ga. Since the first edition was published, significant new advances have been made in our understanding of events and processes on early Earth that correspond with new advances in technology. The book includes contributions from over 100 authors, all of whom are experts in their respective fields. The research in this reference concentrates on what is directly gleaned from the existing rock record to understand how our planet formed and evolved during the planetary accretion phase, formation of the first crust, the changing dynamics of the mantle and style of tectonics, life's foothold and early development, and mineral deposits. It is an ideal resource for academics, students and the general public alike. - Advances in early Earth research since 2007 based primarily on evidence gleaned directly from the rock record - More than 50% of the chapters in this edition are new and the rest of the chapters are revised from the first edition, with more than 700 pages of new material - Comprehensive reviews of areas of ancient lithosphere from all over the world, and of crust-forming processes - New chapters on early solar system materials, composition of the ancient atmosphere-hydrosphere, and overviews of the oldest evidence of life on Earth, and modeling of early Earth tectonics
